Gmail tabs - the money won't be in the list for long

As Gmail rolls out the new tabs, I've noticed that 100% of the email lists I'm subscribed to are going to the promotions tab. The question is how often are users going to be LOOKING at this tab?

Will Gmail Tabs be the Death of Email Marketing?

I don't think it will have a huge effect.

I honestly think a lot of the typical buyers in this market actually liked being sold to. They go looking for other products and opportunities to buy. So if they have to click on a different tab to look at all those emails, they will do so.

I could be wrong though. Only time will tell.

In our space maybe... marketing to other marketers is easy, those of us who are on each others lists are there on purpose. But marketing to end users...? Half the trick in getting users to open an email is in crafting a subject that DOESN'T look like a marketing piece. With Gmail filtering this for them (based on the presence of an unsubscribe link) it almost acts like a secondary spam filter.

Users will pop over to the promotions tab to get whatever incentive you offered them to join the list, but how often will they be visiting that tab in the future?

Or it could thin the herd and make it even easier for the people who do it right. Actually that's pretty much guaranteed with every new update that comes out ever.

Smart thing you just did, though.

By the way, I think your claim that no one wants to be marketed to, and then mentioning the Home Shopping Network in the same sentence is funny.

'Cause people don't go there, and QVC, with the sole purpose of looking to buy stuff. Right. What else are they there for? And all the viewership they get! No one!

Then maybe, just maybe, you should diversify the methods upon which you communicate with your audience?

    But, #emailforever.

Yes, definitely agree with you on this as well. Probably, not collecting mailing addresses and doing direct mail, is one of the biggest mistakes most marketers are making, right now!

It's on the list of things to do, though.

Just having a list does not mean money... That old adage 'The money is in the list' is incomplete.

The money is in your relationship with the list.

If you have a solid relationship with your list, no matter what folder or tab the email goes under, they'll seek out your info because it is helping them... And when you help them, they will look forward to more!
