Do You Struggle With Selecting A Niche?

Lots of people tell me that the hardest part for them is choosing the right niche. They sit and spend hours and hours and hours trying to figure out the right niche for them to enter because we all don't want to choose the wrong niche.

Is it hard for you to select a niche?

Its easy! Start with passions and hobbies... Cross reference those with Google's Keyword tool and then cross reference those phrases with products and services.

We love making money and traveling... So finding a 100% commission travel-based incentive marketing program to promote was easy-cheese... And not only are we building a large teambuild, we also get to deduct travel expenses as business expenses!

At first, yes, because I didn't know what I was doing.

Then I starting doing some DEEP research into what made people BUY.

A specific niche is nothing more than a specific need or want in any market. So think of niches as people's need and/or wants. Some people have come up with creative terms for this, such as "desperate buyers" or "repeat buyers", but ultimately you want to think of niches as needs or wants.

    Here are some quick examples:

Does a little league coach want or need to improve the swing of his players? What about their defense?

Does someone with painful ulcers want or need to find something that will make the pain go away?

When someone's ears ring with Tinnitus, are they looking for a solution?

Are people looking to Stop Their Divorce when they've effed up their relationship?

Do people look to Dr. Phil to solve their problems? (Yes, there are several niches that fall under this broad question).

Does you local (or any) hospital need to find or replace some of their medical equipment? (BIG money maker for those that know how to monetize this).

Do people need to take a cash advance on their payroll?

Does Bobby Jo or Mary need to borrow money to get their car fixed when it breaks down?

Do young, single, horny men want girlfriends? (OK, you should see where I"m going by now).

Raves are at their all time popularity now, what do RAVERS buy? What do they want when they go out and see Tiesto? Markus Schulz? Myon & Shane? Etc.? Do they prefer Trance? Electro-House? Progress House? Deep House? How competitive are popular raves like "Electronic Daisy Carnival?".

What do pregnant women need and want when they want the best for their child?

I could go on and on. People worry about keywords and competition, when they should be focusing on what people need and want, and the distribution channels to reach them.

The single, most profitable niches that I've ever got into were the ones where I've asked people what their passions, needs, and wants were.

The answers already given are spot on. When I'm looking to do something different I start with what I like and enjoy talking about. I think about things I talk to friends and family about or things they ask me about. I've even replayed the conversations I've had or things I've done in the last week to stir ideas - and found some great ones that way.

Then it's off to the keyword tool to see if there's a demand for that information. Most of the time I find the interest isn't is out there... occasionally it isn't. Who knows why so few people share my love of collecting blank betamax tapes.

    Its easy as 1,2,3,4

    1. Have a walk in the park and think about the need of the local people which other people can't see.
    2. Come home and research about he field and the competition.
    3. Go ahead of it only if you've INTEREST in the niche.
    4. Provide value, get leads and you know what happens next!

I found it very easy... I just looked at everything and picked something that interested me or something I liked to do. I don't see why it's that hard.

I just voted YES and was surprised at how similar the results are. I have learned a lot about how to find a niche from this forum but I haven't found a niche that I would like to target yet.

Still, I know the basics. I think a lot of people are like me when it comes to finding their first niche; they over think, and look for the best niche possible. I plan on setting up a niche website soon, after I finish my service website.

I think when you get into your niche, you have to focus less on numbers and stats, and jump into a niche you are passionate about. There are certainly good keywords in almost any niche out there, so you shouldn't really bother with that, in my opinion.
But knowing exactly what you are talking about, providing useful information and resources, sometimes even from your own experience - that's how you create an authority.
