Hello everyone!

I have been reading this forum for a couple of months now and it has really inspired me to act on my desires to get into internet marketing. I have been interested in internet marketing since the Rich Jerk program caught my eye several years back. I read a lot of that information and really was interested, but never took action. Well, after reading the forums for a while, I saw in a post that HostGator was having a %51 off sale. I thought to myself, "This has to be a sign!" I pulled the trigger and signed up for a year. I registered a domain Platteriverairboating.com and am building a blog on there around my passion of airboating for practice building sites.

Anyway, on to the meat of this post. I would like to build a second site to actually monetize and build up to a successful (hopefully!) business. The idea I had in mind is a photography site that focuses on how to shoot, not as much on the hardware side. I was thinking of initially offering some affiliate links to clickbank products and maybe some affiliate links for actual cameras and accessories too. I would like to build an online community, and build a list that I can market to.

My question is, does this sound like I am approaching this in a way that could be successful in time? I am not looking to get rich quick here. I am looking for something that I could build up to replace my 8-5 income within 2-4 years of working at it. I am also not trying to reinvent the wheel, but rather apply my topic to a wheel that has been proven to roll! I would love any recommendations, suggestions and tips you guys can offer me.

I would like to close this post by saying thank you to all of you; not just the ones that reply to this post, but also to everyone that has helped me already up to this point. I truly appreciate it.

Sorry for the long post, but I have had these questions building up for a while!

skip the photography niche. it's been raked over by too many IMers and there are about a dozen or more sites like digital-photography-school that have dominated every search term in the market.

i know. cause i've already tried it.

find a different niche that is easy to make money at. maybe airboating has a lot of potential?

There's no such thing as an over saturated niche. Just takes a longer more high quality plan to enter a tougher niche.

The First point to be noted that you're doing what you like and interested in, that's great. now coming to the profits. You can definitely make money with photography as I think its one of your liking and you don't want to make money fast but for sure in future, if so go for it there is lot to be earned. There are still many coaching seekers about photography and I'am one of them. you can make video tutorials on how to do better photography etc. I would suggest you to make your own products in the product in the photography niche.

And finally, I'am suggesting you to go for this only if you've interest in it not just for money. If you're focusing on making just money then change your niche right now.

If your going to be selling photographs, make sure to use low resolution images on the site and watermark everything, and then share them on places like Pinterest and FB etc with the watermarks on them.

Sell the copies and rites to use etc then if you like with or with out the watermarks.

I would then add a blog to the website teach people how to take photographs. You can partially monetize that with ad sense etc, and may even consider selling a guide book or something else.

There is some money in great photographs, and guides from great photographers, best to make sure you truly qualify as one. I would not start a photography based website without some awesome photographs people will share around on social media.

I took a short look at your Blog just now, the colors on the images seem a bit on the red side(warm), if your going to be working with images, make sure you have an accurate monitor to adjust things on, also the skies are washed out a bit, so additional adjustments in color temperature, brightness, and contrast might help.

Your blog would be your community, get on blogcatalog and the likes to get the blog going. you can add a forum also if you feel you can get that going, I have struggled with forums personally.

Make sure you don't waste your time and money advertising a crappy or incomplete website, and learn all about SEO as you go. Advertise only once your fully ready to start selling.

Best of luck, it's a long difficult road, but not impossible.

Thank you everyone for your input and feedback. I fear that the problem is that I am interested in learning more about photography, and may not be at the expert level required to be selling photography related products or services yet. Maybe I will go back to the drawing board.

Some of my other interests include golf, airboating, home improvement/woodworking, project management. These are all areas that I feel that I am somewhat of an expert in and could easily recommend products for. Where I get hung up with any niche selection is, what products can you sell for these things? For example, airboating, if I were to create a product around that what are some examples of products that people would be interested in? I guess what I want to know is, what kind of product do fellow IMers create, or where can I look to find examples of these products?

Would anyone have any suggestions on what kind of products I could sell on an airboating blog if I decided to go that route?

With respect I think your going about it the wrong way. Let me name 3 sites for you that are super popular and then you can guess what they have in common.

      Facebook
      Google
      Twitter

Know what they all had in common? .... Not a single one of them had a marketing plan prior to being created. Making money was almost an after thought. The first thought was building something awesome. That the main thing. There are a billion websites out there trying to get you to buy a trillion things. If you just build another website your not doing anything special. What you need to do in any niche is build an AWESOME website .. get tons of targeted traffic then worry about making cash.
Which brings me to my second point you really should choose a niche that you are super interested in.

    Hi Airboater1-

I think that sounds like a good idea to start. The fact that you are viewing it as a long term project is really good too...especially since you've chosen a competitive niche. Don't let that discourage you though. Just remember to always focus on giving people what THEY want, not what YOU think they want. Spend some time in photography forums to really get to know who your target market is.

You may even want to focus on only one specific aspect of photography, such as how to take awesome close-ups or shoot beautiful landscapes. If you can find a way to tightly focus on one smaller aspect of photography, you will always be successful, no matter how saturated the market appears to be. Go for it!
