I need help, in big trouble

I make my full time living from traffic to my web site. In the past month my traffic has dropped 70%.
My sales are almost zero this month. Maybe 10% of what I normally make.

How can I turn this sitiuation around ASAP.

Your question is too vague to get a meaningful answer...

How do we know what was your traffic source? And why did it dry up?
Why did the conversion rate also drop?

Too many unknown factors to even try to guess. You didn't tell the whole story.

    1. what was your traffic source?
    2. What happened suddenly to your website?
    3. your website link.
    4. Conversion before and after.

Are all your pages still indexed? Did you drop rankings? What was the exact day you saw the drop in traffic? Did you change anything before the drop, ANYTHING at all? Did you check Webmaster tools for any issues? Need more details.

    Hi there,

Can you give us some more clue? More information? Have you changed anything lately? We can't really help you out without more info.

It could be Almighty Google playing tricks or something coming from you but until we get more info, we won't be able to see what might have gone wrong here!

    Let us know.

You can respond to this thread ASAP to get some solutions.

But I'm guessing you've been depending completely on Google and now your website is ranked lower so you've lost that traffic - never depend on a single source for your income.

    Sell the site.

Get rid of it and move on.

Use your earnings to create something new - and for goodness sake learn your lesson:

Relying on a search engine for your livelihood isn't smart business.

I am serious when I say dump the site if you can't find other more reliable ways to drive traffic.

Start contacting SEO's who also have their own suite of websites and make them an offer. Let them deal with the rankings.

I've mostly gotten my traffic from google and article marketing. But ezine stop approving my articles a couple years ago. So I let the articles lapse and just used my own blogs to genetate traffic.
I was able to suppliment my traffic with tv and radio appearances. I did a few eppisoe of Dr Drew and Nightline and some Tru TV HLN and a lot of radio and pocasts Internet radi stuff. I get lot of quick traffic and it converts to sales and even people will save the link and contact me weeks or months later.

The intervies I get now don't want to focuson my site and services, They want me to discus Jodi Aria nd George Zimmerman o I suspect the traffic I may get now is fr les targeted and less friendly because of the contraversial nture of the topics but that's all I cn really get booked on riht now without hiring a pes agent. I can't aford that.

You need to figure out then who the people that were coming through before were and find where else you can target them.

It seems to me you got hosed by the latest Google alg change though. You should probably clean up your backlinks and maybe try to find some new, more relevant ones. Do you have social presence? If so are you linking through to your site? Google seems to like Google+ (imagine that). Can you expand your services to get into new markets?

Dump your site. I hate yet to see someone who made a full recovery. Maybe start learning how to do PPC or how to acquire traffic from another source. I personally spent over five months trying to recover one of my sites only to watch it painfully have less and less traffic. DONT rely on Google.

If we're all playing a guessing-game here (and it looks like we are?), my guess is that Google's Penguin update has suddenly hammered you because of your spammy backlinks on sites not relevant to yours.

      I hope I'm wrong.

The service you offer are scary. Is that legal?

And you've been on TV? Why do people who invite you on TV want you to talk about Goerge Zimmerman, I don't get the link?

If SEO and article marketing has failed you and your press appearances have dried up then look at other ways to generate traffic such as forum marketing, blog commenting, banner ads, PPC, content syndication, podcasts, guest posting, video marketing, social media or one of the other many traffic methods. Picking which ones suit you best is up to you.

No not necessarily. You just need to replace your SEO traffic with new traffic sources.

SEO has changed, the old methods don't work so well now. Anyone didn't adapt likely got burned by Google which I'm guessing is what probably happened to you?

I'm not saying that. (I don't know enough about the situation to say that).

But sites with mass backlinks on pages not relevant to the site are very high-risk eventually to be heavily penalized by that nasty penguin, I'm afraid.

I know it won't make you feel any better, but you'd certainly be in good company: it seems to have happened to huge numbers here.

It was SEO traffic that's suddenly vanished, then, was it?

Only you know whether you've bought mass backlinks, or used software to build irrelevant backlinks, or used "SEO services" who might have done, but it's clearly possible (at least!) that if you have, that's the problem here. If that's so, you may want to look into Google's "link disavowal tool", but it may be far from a simple and straightforward matter, and recovery may be considerably less than what's desired, I hear. Some communication with Google, if that's possible, might also be a good idea?

Is that what they call hacking into peoples emails? :p

Seriously though if it's SEO traffic that's suddenly dropped, you haven't actually said it is or not yet, then you just need to find ways to replace that traffic using some / all / none of the methods I've mentioned above.

My ecomerce software does store a list of emails from past clients. It must be a significant list probably 20-25,000 emails.

But I don't posess the knowledge to put together a good marketing email and I don't see a lot of repeat business from a client that may have hired me in a cyber stalking investigation 5 years ago would now need me in an infidelity investigation or vice versa.

I think that when my previous clients get in trouble again they know how to find me because enough of them contact me on a regular basis for free advice and stuff.

For me PPC was expensive. I'm not selling an ebook or course. I'm attracting clients so once I get the client I still have to do the work so paying a lot to get that client is not a good stratedy for me,

When I saw your sig links, I assumed ( probably wrongly) that you were an affiliate for some of the spammy Clickbank products in the ex-back/phone lookup, etc niches.

Reading your posts, I suspect you are much more knowledgeable than that and you are actually selling your own services. I suspect that is where your problem lies. Google cannot distinguish between the site of a legitimate forensic investigator (yourself) and sites selling Clickbank products.

I think you need to reposition yourself in the market and re-assess how your website is written.

My own opinion is that onsite seo is the way to go these days. Have you thought of starting a brand new website, with a more professional appearance and approach and which Google might look more favourably on - as well as the TV/radio shows you want to appear on.

Don't diss the Zimmerman connection. You have it, like it or not, so think laterally and work out how you can legitimately use that on your new site to sell your services.

Thanks my long term goal is to get this book out and try to get a steady gig doing tv commentary on court cases and news stories. So I do plan on a new site promoting myself in that way. I'd much rather be a retired PI talking and making jokes on the rado selling books than doing laborious investigations and depositions and reports.

But for right now I need the income from these sales that come in everyday from this web site.

Having looked at your site, it looks very dated for the types of professional services you are offering.
It might be time to overhaul it.

Apart from IM I have an interest in computer security, computer forensics and hacking. One of the websites I regularly browse is Digital Forensics, Computer Forensics, eDiscovery | ForensicFocus.com
It might be worthwhile putting together an article and seeing if they will publish it as it might generate some interest.

      Good Luck

Edit: You need to send an email to your list reminding them of your services.

    Just a quick question...

If you've been running since 2003 and relying solely on Free traffic, did you ever consider hiring or testing our campaigns for PPC which could in effect make you more profitable?

You might be out of pocket for a bit but a small investment to test some PPC campaigns could help you out in the long run but hard to say if you haven't tried this out before.

I started out with PPC, Perry Marshal stuff. But you have to remember if I pay for traffic I then still have to work hours to provide the services. I's not like selling an ebook where you pay for traffic and concentrate of marketing all day to sell the same product over and over.

You definitely need to update your website and make it look more professional, it looks out dated and spammy.

You should make your connections to these big cases and TV appearances well known on your site...like really obvious so that people who land on the site know you're a big deal as soon as they land.

I'm actually surprised with your site in the current state that you made many sales, it's not a site that I would trust or buy from.

Just my opinion and I'm probably not your target market.

Seeing as your site is no longer ranking in the search engines you'll need to come up with an alternative traffic plan, there's no other option.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[8198644].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author W130SN
Also if you really don't have time to do the required marketing then it might be time to outsource.

It is clear you can no longer rely on google for your traffic. As you are in a specialized field you need to connect and link to professional bodies and associations in that sector.

As others have said you need to use the media angle too.

I would suggest you write an article something along the lines of "An Investigator In The Media Spotlight" highlighting some of the cases you have worked or commented on.
Offer it for free to some of the professional sites in your area of expertise making sure they link back to your site.
At least that way if you don't get more clients you might get some more media work.

This site might also be useful to you Free Publicity - Connecting Reporters and News Sources - Help a Reporter Out

Edit: Having searched for "Opperman Investigations" the first page of google brings up a WordPress Site and a Blogspot site that you run, this is then followed by two Rip-Off Reports about Emailrevealer. This will harm your business.

Seriously, I think it is time to hire a web design professional to build you a new website incorporating your business site and your blog. Then get a SEO professional to help get rid of the ripoff reports from page 1 of google.

You might not want to spend the money but the longer you wait more damage will occur.
