Is it really necessary to design a separate mobile website? I have a wordpress site, and it seems to show up ok on mobile phones.

What are the elements for mobile sites? And why it's needed, if the site already shows up ok on mobile?

Thanks.

Necessary depends on perspective and achieving the best results. Your site may appear fine which is good. The best way to approach this from your end which is the business end is to think of the other end.

The most important consideration concerns hardware resources in mobile phones. Mobile sites with a lot of graphics consume bandwidth and allotted resources. Some phones or handheld devices may or will have problems displaying mobile sites that heavily consume resources.

It's always a good idea to think of users toward the bottom end of capability. Also, it's known and proven that mobile phone surfers are less impatient than non-mobile surfers. So they'll be less inclined to read a long article or post. This is somewhat generally speaking.

You'll want to convey only the meat and potatoes depending on your audience and topic, of course. The best approach is to make a memorable impact and if possible, have them take some desired action. Ideally, you want them to move to your site from their laptop or desktop machine.

There is a lot of information online about mobile site optimization which has nothing to do with SE optimization.

Make things very easy, have impact, and fast for mobile users. Also, I've read from highly credible sources, studies, that mobile-specific sites are preferred over other mobile site formats.

If necessary, what do I need to do to improve the mobile experience?

      Thanks.

If you are using a WordPress site with a fluid design (mobile) you're already set. No need to develop a mobile only site.

If you do want to develop a mobile site, you would need a working knowledge of setting up media queries in CSS, html layout fluid design options, image display stuff etc.

But it sounds to me like you are already offering a mobile site through WordPress. The Twenty Twelve theme was designed with mobile screens in mind.

just to be on the safe side check it on more than one type of mobile device like androids and iphones and blackberries the top 3 and see if it appears ok. If so then you are already all set and your WP theme supports mobile devices.

My website doesn't have any mobile theme, but displays ok on mobile. It looks the same as a desktop browser, with all features and links available.

So, what can a mobile theme or mobile design help? what are the benefits of haven't a responsive mobile site?

        Thanks.

I think in the next few years, all the sites will be for mobiles.
It's a big offline market right now.
