What Makes Good Directory Site Software?

A friend was telling me about the Appthemes plugin that turns wordpress into a directory site, and I've been checking it out. I have some directory sites. In my experience, most of the new listings come from SEOs hired by business owners, not usually by the business owners themselves. So I want make my software better for SEOs, so I thought I'd pick your collective brains.

If you do SEO for clients, what would be awesome to find out you could do on a directory site? (I already have link exchange, articles, customizable listing pages.)

What would make you want to pay for membership, or pass on the charge to the client for membership?

Any other thoughts you have about directory sites...

My thought about directory sites: They are useless and don't provide much value for anyone.

Well, you're probably not thinking about angie's list or yellowpages.com or superpages, or the better business bureau's website, or going way way back.... DMOZ (which I always did think was useless, but the SEs liked it for a while).

There are a bunch of service businesses that use directories to increase their online visibility. And almost every industry association has a "directory" online now.
