Hiring a WP designer for newb?

I have a site with a bunch of articles that I want to get prettied up. I'm not looking at spending a ton of money on it. But I do want it to get prettied up and related to the theme of my product.

Should I get a designer? I just want to see what is possible in terms of designs.

So how does one go about doing this? What is the process? If I ask for a sketch will it need to be for free? What's next after that?

Thank you.

I will definitely get one from odesk.

**pls dont offer design services to me here

    Hi,
I just read your request up and i am not sure exactly what you are looking for?!
but as far as I understood is; if you want to organize your site to be more good look !
then first of all you need to back up all the content and then if you have enough acknowledgement on the WP techniques then you need to look for good WP theme which makes you satisfy or gets the Site look more professional !
Did I answer your question? or not yet ?

As a designer and owner of a design firm, it is important to be upfront with the designer as far as your expectations, requirements and budget. Every designer is different but the key to the process is communication. Just ask.

Usually, you are going to pay for some form of mock up. They are working, so compensation would be required as it would be for any other job. Sometimes you can find someone to do it for pro-bono but its very rare.

I dont know it that helped. Hopefully, it did.

Designer guy is charging me $50 for a sketch. That seems a little high IMO.

$50 for a sketch is NOT expensive. High quality web design takes a lot of skill and time. The fact that some third-world country designers charge $100-$150 for a few days worth of work doesn't mean that it's an acceptable rate. If you're on a budget, I recommend that you find a good template instead.

You're probably better getting a premium theme if you're not sure what you really want. If you have a blog themes like Genesis Generate and Thesis are good and flexible. Most blogs don't need custom designs to begin with.

It can be hard to communicate to a designer what you want when you're new to all this and don't have a frame of reference. If you insist on a custom theme then seek out a website you like the look of and get something similar done with some custom specifications.

Be super clear with your designer what you want. Go through very detail with them.
Talk about features that should and should not be features, show him examples on other sites where possible.
