Hey guys I had a crazy idea today. I have a few websites in small markets that are starting to come good and i am still working hard on them, but i want to tackle a big keyword if i use "keyword here" then their is 1,440,000 on google for that keyword
how long do you think that would take to beat and hit that big old front page on google?????? competition is stiff but it could be lots of fun trying!!
Tell me what you think is it possible
Am i just thinking crazy?

1 million is not all that difficult, and a lot of those results are not people trying to rank for that keyword. I'd give it 3-4 months if things go well, though certainly you have to look at the competition. If you had say 8 pagerank 6+ pages on the first page, that would be more difficult.

    Hi Owen,

Just to get an idea of what the really tough competition will be, try the following:

    1. Log into Google.

    2. Set it to display 100 results per page in Advanced Preferences.

    3. Go back to the search box and enter your term "in quotes".

    4. Scroll down to the bottom and click on what should be page 10 of the results.

    5. Note the number that comes up.

That's the number of sites AFTER Google has "omitted similar sites". It has a limit, so if it says 1,000 results it may be much higher. However, you may be surprised to see that there are only 700 or so "actual" competitors to worry about.

It's not perfect, and you'll want to consider the bigger number, too. But it gives you another way of measuring what you're up against.

    All the best,
    Michael

Sorry, I missed the fact you said it was in quotes on your first post. I'm thinking 1.4 million in quotes is going to take you a while, and you may want to consider some longer tail phrases to get you up and running, and then hone in on the big one a little later. I'm guessing 1+ years would not be out of the question. I have a pagerank 7 site where I am ranked about 7th for such a phrase.

      Glad to help.

Keep in mind, this is just one number...a part of the whole. But, in my opinion, because it weeds out duplicate pages, it paints a different picture of who the real competition is.

Finally, let me add: Go for it! Someone has to be at the top of the SERPs, it may as well be you. It may take work, but nothing is impossible. Just be sure that if you make it to number one, that your visitor's expectations are met, and that you are persuasive in getting them to act.

      All the best,
      Michael

dvd the only problem i have is that even the long tail keywords are up against pretty much the same competition its a tight market and the only way to get their i think is to get everything ready and blast threw backlinks articles will be coming out my ears
im not going to lie this could get messy!!!
