Horrible Drawback to Branding Your Name

I always harp on everyone to "brand your name!"

Well this sure is backfiring on me now.

Getting a divorce and wanting my maiden name back REAL BAD (as in there's no other option for me happiness-wise) means everything's I've branded with Tiffany Dow now has to be changed to Tiffany Lambert.

Not just personal life, but all forum membership names (like here), social media accounts (Twitter, G+, Facebook), my domain (already grabbed my maiden one months ago when I saw this coming), etc.

Someone on my list brought up a good point - surely most social networks have made this a simple process you can do without losing all your friends/followers, right? I mean divorce is as common as air here (unfortunately).

It was so easy when I GOT married because I was only branded by a username (writertiff) on Elance, forums, etc. But then I branded my own name and now I'm going to have a mess to deal with.

Maybe I'll revise my advice now - brand your FIRST name and some sort of motto or something. (If you're a woman).

And no, I don't want any hyphens. I want ME back. Guess I'll have to go knocking on a mod's PM door soon to see if that's possible here...

Tiff

You can definitely ask a mod to change your name on the WarriorForum. You just have to have a good reason and I think yours counts!

Facebook and most other social media sites allow you to at least use your maiden name without changing the name your signed up with. I'm sure there is someway to update it for marriage just haven't needed to do it myself. Not how to change it for divorce.

Best of luck in these trying times.

Tiffany, just submit a request to the help desk and Thomas will change your name. It's a common enough occurrence I've seen several users change their name over the years.

    Tiff,

I can sort of relate... when I started online in 2001, I branded my name and everything else I produced was used under that brand name.

then, when the opportunity arose to sell that business that bared my name, i did it because it was a good amount of money.

so, needless to say, it was weird not being able to use my name in any future products in that niche... since i had to sign a non compete clause.

it's very weird to sign paperwork saying you can't use your own name... but thankfully i've learned from Gary Halbert and John Carlton, who said years ago that if you build businesses with the intention to sell, not to use your own name.

so i completely understand where you're coming from. different in my case, but enough to understand!

I'll miss Tiffany Dow. It will take some work to get your maiden name back to the level of recognition you now have with the 'Dow' surname. . This is something for the ladies to bear in mind.

Been there done that, and personally if this situation ever came up again for me, I would keep whatever brand I had created, but legally change my name for my own peace of mind.

If customers ever became curious I would share my personal story.

BUT your brand Tiffany is widely known, I would NOT compromise that just because a marriage did not survive.

I guess I would even feel like (he) beat me at my own game if I was basically forced to give up a brabd I had birthed from the start.

Good luck through your divorce, the end can really be the start of something much needed!

Yeah, you'll notice a lot of times female movie stars etc who get married will still keep their maiden name in use. It's for branding purposes but also because divorce is so common nowadays.

It will take some time to rebrand yourself, just like it does any business brand, but if that's what you want to do then that's what you gotta do.

Well... Congrats then on getting out of a marriage that wasn't working. Been there done that myself. I can relate a little bit to the branding (not at your level). I lost my domain thomasdean.com by not paying attention to emails & lost it again by not paying attention to the ending time of an auction for it. Believe me I want my name back!

I'm know you can do it but your name is so well branded. I was working on a rewrite/update of how to use Open Office to create PDF's. I thought hey I could use some new templates for open office & some content. 6 years or more after I purchased some of your templates for Open Office I typed your previous name into google to see what you might have available. You easily took up the first two pages of Google.

I'm no SEO expert but maybe you could ask one about saving your established links using 301 redirects on your index pages or something. Again I haven't had the need to do any SEO in years... just a thought.

Good idea Tom! I'm one who usually never pays much attention to SEO so I'm hoping I can naturally build it back and point my domain to my new one or something

That sucks about your domain - I suppose tomdean.com is gone? or a middle initial in the mix? Sucks I know.

I grabbed tiffanylambert.com a little while back when I saw this coming so I'm lucky. I looked at the first pages of google for it and it doesn't look hard for me to topple again.

And thank you for the kind compliment!

This is another reason why I always recommend people NOT brand themselves around their own names - especially for their own websites and domains.

I would recommend keeping tiffanydow.com and redirecting it to your new name/domain.

Good point - I hadn't thought about keeping it long-term but that'd be stupid not to control it.

I am still going to brand myself with my new name. I like the concept, but I'll never change my name again, even if I marry Ian Somerhalder himself. (Although man that'd be hard if he begged with those eyes). LOL

Something you definitely don't think about when you start out.

Don't know if that helps but how's about you using TiffanyD. - where the D. can stand for other stuff then your family name.

I on the other hand can't understand that you can not keep your Brand name TiffanyDow as it became a brand on it's own, independant from your married name - unless YOU want to get rid of it under the circumstances.

Dow Chemicals - Dow Jones - T.D.? I never knew that those where familiy names :-)

Tiffany is a good name because it is not so common. It remains in your mind. Perhaps it is a good idea to just use your first name and nothing else.

Many people begin a new life in the middle of the way. You are not the first one.

But why should you make the public remember another surname? You already are famous online.

You can simply gradually eliminate your surname and just be Tiffany without more details.

Ah but for some reason when I just hear Tiffany I instantly have the ear worm "I think we're alone now...there doesn't seem to be anyone around..."

And as a child of the 80s who grew up fiercely dedicated to Van Halen (not Hagar), Motley Crue and all sorts of hair bands - I shiver at the thought of anyone confusing me with her. LOL!

But I could go with Tiffany rae (my middle name). Really, my subscribers just know me as Tiff - but I'm pretty sure tiff.com is gone - or relates to some weird graphics file or something.

Then parens or strike through the Dow for a while and then drop it. It's a gradual transition that will let searchers and clients find you while you are moving on at the same time.

          Hi Tiffany,

Sorry to here about your divorce and dilemma.

I just did a Google search for "Tiffany Dow" (in parenthesis) and got, "About
          99,500 results".

I think you have a problem similar to "Twinkies". "Twinkies" company went out of business, but Twinkies will live on with a new company. They are keeping the "Twinkies" brand name alive.

Your brandname is also well known. I know you need to or should I say, MUST move on,however you have currently branded product (Tiffany Dow) that should be maintained until your new product (Tiffany Lambert) is as well established as the old one.

      Marry another Dow :-)

Seriously though, consider either re-branding around
your first name + something else that is durable and
helps you get a short and memorable domain name
      too.

Or come up with a unique brand name that will suit
you now and long into the future.

Everything in life happens for a reason so use the
lemons to make lemonade. Use this as an opportunity

If I ever get married again, it'll be to someone who is supportive of my brand and wouldn't care if I kept my maiden name And if I loved him enough to want his name, I wouldn't mind going through this all again. Now if I could have Oprah's wealth, I might consider this. lol

Building your new brand won't be as difficult as starting from scratch because you've already got a lot of status in the market. Just be sure to carefully manage the transition and use the opportunities that your new brand will undoubtedly present.

P.S. How about Tiff Lambert-Taylor? Has a certain ring
          to it!
Thanks! I hope to legally be part of it sooner rather than later (we're eliminating debt we built up mutually before we make it legal).

I'll be very vocal about the change so that most people know about it and some I'm sure will spread the word. So that will help.

I do love the name Taylor But I already have a friend named Tiffany Taylor

          I recommend rebranding with a nickname....ExWife?

          Tiffanys@Breakfast?
Shiver. Do you know how many people (in the 80s) would sing that jokingly after I introduced myself? Or say, "Oh, you're that 80s singer?" Horrid! Make me Lita Ford or something and we're good. But Tiffany? lol.

Middle name's a good idea too since that won't change. And I liked that song too from the 80s... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6Q3mHyzn78
Thanks! That's a good idea for women who want to get married later. I am 100% sure that my legal name is never again going to change once I'm Tiffany Lambert again. And the middle name's good but mine's "rae" with a small r so that's odd to brand with. (You know we Southerners - always have two names - Bonnie Sue, Billy Jean, Tiffany rae...

          MUCH easier for men.

Yes they're being so, so supportive. I think I figured out that on FB it's really easy (my personal FB) - they allow you to do it a few times without any problems. With the Fan Page I'll have to have them do it. Twitter looks easy too - so I can do that one.

I won't look back - too much happiness moving forward!

          Thanks guys

Tiffany Lambert, huh? Any relation to a Jennifer Lambert whom I went to school with in Elmira, NY? (way way back, waayyyy back, lol) There seems to be a slight resemblance. It's a long shot, but had to ask.

Sorry to hear the marriage didn't work out.
Glad to hear that you're strong enough to make the necessary change.

That is a sticky situation. I have been thinking about using a version of my last name instead of the real thing b/c it is difficult to spell from hearing it. But then again it is very unique. Decisions, decisions...

Trying to keep it from being that. But it's definitely a fragile process.

Yeah that's hard - hard to spell versus original. Good luck with that decision!

Hi Ms. Lambert, congratulations on your divorce, and good luck and good wishes to you, as ever: you'll be branded as Tiffany Lambert very quickly, anyway.

Thanks Alexa! Can't wait to do my first video blog (maybe today or tomorrow) and not say, "Hi this is tiffany dow..." I'll say it the right way now!

Does Hallmark make cards for such events?

Tiffany, you're from Texas, which means you're stubborn and bullheaded (a stereotype I have yet to see proven wrong). I'm 100% sure the future has good things in store for you.

I would advise taking a company name and branding yourself as a guru/authority that runs the company. That way you get the best of both worlds and it is easier for selling your company down the line as an option. Buyers would rather have a company name to protect their investment. OR, they will have much stricter covenants if they buy your company of you NOT competing ever with your name as the company name.

another tip when getting over someone, learned from way too many breakups, lol, is it helps to throw away old towels, sheets, pillowcases, and buy new ones for a fresh start, and new window treatments/blinds/curtains, and move into a new place if possible, all helps.. best wishes with the rebranding and moving forward

I live in my childhood home that I'm very sentimental about but yes, it'll be heavily renovated and old stuff tossed Thank you!

I like the combination. Tiffany Lambert is an aristocratic name.

I noticed the change when I opened this thread today.

You should begin something new with your new name and go ahead.

Some people become depressed with a divorce, but there are also people who become very glad.

My mother was so glad when she got divorced that we had a party in our new apartment, without my father. I was a teen, but I helped her in all ways.

What a wonderful thing to do! I won't have a party because I do have one little one and this is a part (slightly) sad (because it's different), part happy thing for her. Don't want to rub it in. But my kids are happy that I'm happy and they're happier too.

We've done so many great things since making this decision - repainting our wooden furniture together, new lamps, new vases with flowers - took down dark blinds - gardening and landscaping - it's like our home is alive again!
