Anyone used heat map for traffic analysis?

I've seen this technology very long ago actually.

At 1st i thought it was so cool, but upon thinking and analysing more about it, i dont understand how it can help me significantly.

I somehow cant seem to appreciate the usefulness.

The software/technology tracks mouse position if i understand correctly.
But mouse movement doesnt necessarily equate to eye movement.

I tried this by standing behind my family members and friends when they were using the computer, and no one used their mouse to guide their eyes.
Ie they may be moving their mouse but its hovering at the right hand side while they are reading the content. So for sites that have adsense at the side, usually it is on the right hand side. So base on this logic, the results will show that they are looking at your ads but not your content, using this, you will think, okay they are not really interested in my content, but it got them here, so i shall monetize and focus on adsense.

Another point to note is that some people use touchpad, which affect the way the cursol moves too.

And also it would differ again from someone using a mobile device like ipad or a smartphone.

Unless im missing something here, i dont see how useful mouse tracking can be to marketers.

How did you see through their eye balls?!?!?

I've always wondered the same thing, and just like you ... I noticed it a LOOONG time ago but never heard much about it.

A few weeks ago I got a PM from a guy who said he wrote an ebook about how he's used it to increase income... but I haven't heard from him since or seen his report.

Isn't the heat map a Google product too? Odd irony if so.

      Here is how:

Heatmaps are a good hidden marketing tool which can you used to your advantages if you know how, and you have listed some good ways with squeeze pages and membership sites.

They are a good way to see computer activity from a different and angle, that many wouldn’t have done so before, and can certainly get marketers a new way to see their webpages and improve their marketing.

      Some Heatmap Marketing Tips:
      • Use these for A/B tests. Eg Test 2 versions of one squeeze page using heatmaps. They can be used to see which one performs better, and use the better one for your marketing.
      • Track click activity, so you see what people are actually clicking on, and what they are Not!
      • Track mouseovers, to see what people are hovering over, to show where common interest lays, and check any neglecting areas.
      • Don’t be scared, or don’t find it hassle to adapt your web pages due to the results from your headmap anaylsis.
Sometimes a little bit of extra effort can cause some big improvement in your success!
      • Use heatmaps to detect flaws in your pages, and sites. When you do this you can use these results to improve them.
      • Do headmap analysis to ALL of your pages, squeeze pages, sales pages, blog pages, and don’t neglect any! (even if you have 40 pages, spend time to do it on all) You will get an eye opener when you see these results.
      • When you find the areas of your pages where visitors click/hover over the most, then place some adsense there (if it is a content blog for example)
then you can make some clicking $ money from them, as you know they common mouse hovering there.

Are you saying google made a heat map product?
I've seen a lot of private products but I had no idea google made 1, is it possible you can forward the details or a link?

How? In what way can users use the results to help optimize their site. ?

If we are talking about clicks, google analytics can do that, normal clicks tracking that your hosting company provides can give you that as well.

In my OP, i "argued" on this that mouseover or wherever the mouse hover doesnt always equate to eyeball movement.

How does mouseover detect flaws on your pages?
What kind of flaws are you talking about?

Again, my mouse may be on the extreme right, but my eyes are not.
I park my mouse at the side of my screen when watching or reading something so as to not block my view of whatever im viewing.

So if you put ads there, i may not even look at it.

So the debate is more to "how does mouseover equate to eyeball movement".
