Is that all it takes these days to say you're an Internet Marketer? I feel like my longtime profession is being cheapened daily! :confused:

I would say (imo of course) that even if you're an expert in one aspect of IM it makes sense to classify yourself as such, but being a one-trick-pony is also a very dangerous place to be.

How would you classify an "Internet Marketer"?

    An internet market is:

    Somebody who markets, on the internet.

    That's my opinion, anyways...

    Just somebody who uses the medium of the internet to "market"

    I'm 100% in agreement with Jay's definition.

    I was in internet marketing before Internet Marketing was invented

    It takes more than a few tweets to be a successful internet marketer IMHO.

      Which is why the loose use of this title makes it problematic. Internet Marketers, especial SEO'ers have had a hard enough time trying to prove to clients and the world that these things do actually work and should be invested in. I just see the whole IM thing going in the way wrong direction, but I guess we'll see.

    I'm not in that field but I would suggest basic business rules apply.

    A business will spend money for one of only two reasons:

    1. To make more money than they spent to make it.

    2. To save more money than they spent to save it.

    Show them the evidence and it's a no brainer surely.

    I think you are worrying about other people's actions too much.. Focus on proving what YOU can do and all the rest will fall into place...

      Do you know how insulting it is to provide a link to wikipedia to someone who's full time job is what is contained in the link?

      I once made the same mistake by sharing a link with my programmers to some basic definition of coding technique (that of course I had no idea was basic) and received this link in return: Search engine optimization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

          Not trying to be dramatic, just giving you a tip so you don't continue to rub people the wrong way unknowingly.

          I've worked for 3 different companies (Marketing Director, SE Specialist/Biz Dev Rep & now Online Marketing Manager) since I graduated in '02 with a degree in IM from UMass Amherst, so I don't think I need to get involved in board drama at this stage in my career.

    Even a web designer earns money online, he is not a internet marketer.
    It doesn't matter what the business is. If the owner markets it online then the owner is surely an internet marketer.
