Virgin needs advice! :-)

Hi All, this is my first post so please be gentle :-)

I do some web development and have just set up a new website for a business my wife has started:

http://www.homespunholistics.com

So, I'm completely new to promoting sites and getting ranking etc.

Things I've done so-far:

- Did an article with PR Web
- Dabbled with PitchEngine
- Spent some money on Google Adwords
- Got some conventional PR

Nothing has generated much traffic, with the site getting around 20 visits a day when the Adwords are active and 6-10 when not.

So, I'm thinking, rather than spending a couple of hundred dollars a month the way I am currently, I'd rather team up with someone and pay them for some advice / action to help get this site really rolling.

I've looked through this forum an feel a little lost as where to start. I know I need to generate some backlinks and some of the content on the site needs some attention with keywords etc.

What would be you suggestions to get started?

Cheers
Craig

Nice looking site. I'd concentrate on SEO for the first couple of months, and let traffic build naturally, before looking to buy any. (Unless you want to spend some time and money learning the ins and outs of paid traffic – I didn't when I was starting out.) I'd also concentrate on having your wife write some articles targeting long-tail keywords and posting them somewhere on the site. Once they're up and you've gotten the Google juice, submit them to someplace like ezinearticles.com for more links. Your exposure should gradually build, but you won't have to go into the hole for paid services in the meantime, and you can work on improving your site and products from the customer feedback you get.

Hey Alex - thanks for your quick response.

So the two keys things you picked up on were some articles for the site - which my wife is currently starting on, on some SEO stuff in general.

Do you - or anyone - have any recommendations to point me in the direction of someone I could work with to help me with this - paid of course? I don't really want to go down the freelancer.com route and I have other sites coming up that will need some similar help. I suppose I'm looking for a longer term relationship with someone who can work with me on this ideally. I'm pretty good at picking things up but don't have the time at the moment to become expert in the field.

Or am I over complicating this. Do I really just need to make sure my markup and Google Webmaster report looks OK and just concentrate on the articles etc?

      Thanks again
      Craig

    Hi there!

Please, please, please don't get discouraged! There's always a learning curve when it comes to something like driving traffic. Once in awhile you'll most likely hit a roadblock, but just be sure to keep on going! Not sure if web devt is what you do for a living but your website is superb

Now to answer your question...it really depends on which route you wanna go. Free or Paid. Free = Time. Paid = Money. Once you've decided then you can implement these methods.

If you want to do your own backlinking, feel free to do so. But do note that this can be extremely time consuming. If you want people to help you do the backlinking, head over to the WSO section. There are some great sellers of PR Rank/Backlinking/Blog commenting. Some offer their services DIRT CHEAP. You just need to sift the gems out.

    Other methods:

You could get an article generator/article submitter on the WSO section. Just make sure to get the really good ones.

Social Media. You can get REALLY targeted ads with Facebook (You can choose the demographics and what they like etc). Sponsored tweets. Pay some celebrity who has her own healthcare/skincare line to send out a tweet for you to get your website out. You could probably also do this with a famous Youtuber that does Healthcare/Skincare videos.

Go on Skincare/Healthcare Forums and establish your presence there

Pay for a Skincare/Health blog that gets a decent amount of traffic to put your banner there.

On a side note, I see that you've dabbled into Adwords. Personally, I wouldn't go into PPC. Unless you're absolutely sure of what you're doing.

PS: I gather you're a kiwi? You have a great country

Have a great day and I wish you and your wife all the best!

      Thanks for your feedback.

Yes - I did the branding / site / commerce stuff and the 3d renders / photos etc... This is stuff I'm good at.... :-) Thank you for your nice comment.

I think it's important to say that we don't have a huge budget for this at the moment. Probably maximum of $200-300 over the next month or so, so I'm going to try and take onboard what people have said so far and see how much I can do myself and how much I can get people to help me.

I've taken a look in the WSO section (I assume you mean the Special Offers Forum) - and I'm just blinded by the amount on offer there and knowing which to choose from. Should I post my requirements on that forum do you think?

      Cheers

        Hi there Craig

You sure are welcome! 200-300 is good for a start. I think I should add at this point that in order to post on the WSO you need to have your own money making product or IM related you want to offer to the people there and each posting comes at a cost of $40. So posting there I would say is not an option.

Yep there sure are alot of offers on the WSO section. I've taken the liberty to help you find some offers if you don't mind (Please bear in my I can't guarantee the results of these offers as I have not tried most of them myself, however I would like to add that these offers are highly recommend or have won 'WSO of the day' - Besides most of them have a guarantee, the trick however is to find a winning offer preferably ones with a lot of positive comments and feedbacks). They include a plethora of traffic methods.

        http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...e-reviews.html

        http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...offer-day.html

        http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...-200k-job.html

        http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...1196-sold.html

        http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...ain-again.html

        http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...r-reviews.html

With 200-300 bucks, I recommend you try some of these WSO's since they have a guarantee on them.

Also please refer to my previous post you can try some of those methods out as well.

With that budget though, I would highly recommend paying for backlinking services/article submission services/ any other PageRank service. On top of that, to improve your results you could also try free traffic methods.

If you need additional help just ask

        King regards

I'd say you're overcomplicating it – for the moment, anyway. Just get with your wife and sit down to think of some good long-tails, then have her write the articles. Make sure you ping your site with the search engines once the articles are up, and you should see rankings follow pretty quickly thereafter.

Congrats on the great looking site - I would trust it to make purchases

Like the others mentioned, for now it would be good to focus on content (YT videos, blog articles etc.), and increase engagement across all social networks. Each time you put out a new article / video - shout it out across all platforms.

    Simples!

Picking up some great info here guys - thanks so much.

I'm going to have a meeting with my wife (!) and her friend / business partner tomorrow and plan some articles and produce a couple of videos.

We've got a Facebook page up and running - but I hear a few of you talking about Google + too, so we'll look at that too. Anyone got any thoughts on the benefits of Google+, other than just being another social outlet?

While we concentrate on content and articles I guess we need to sort out on-page SEO stuff. Other than the obvious H1 / Keyword frequency / image alts etc - do you think we should get help on that?

Don't overlook offline promotion. Most customers for that kind of products won't be looking online for random products they've not heard of.

Run some parties and invite people. Give them free supplies if they also run parties and spread the word.

Get stalls at as many local shows and craft fares as you can so people can see your products and try them.

Do you have the WI (Women's Institute) in NZ, or other similar organisations. Offer to do talks and demonstrations to groups - mother and baby groups, women's groups, church groups, retirement groups.

Offer samples to local hair dressers and beauty salons.

I really think that offline is the way to spread the word. Your website is great, and it's where you want people to purchase from, but there is still life beyond the internet - just.

Hi Carol - thanks for your thoughts. Thankfully Rach and Wendy are on the ball with local businesses and markets etc.. We're prepared for it to be a bit of a slow burn, just didn't want to miss any tricks that's all.

We're from the UK originally, and are about to send some samples to some retail stores over there also.

Sadly - the postage to the UK is quite expensive on small orders - working out to be around £7 shipping, and from the orders that we do send to the UK, occasionally one gets hit with crazy customs charges. Shame really... One day we may be big enough to consider a distributor over there, we'll have to wait and see.

Hey all - thank you for your comments.

So - I've digested what you've all had to say and put together an action plan of sorts...

    Things I can do myself:

    1) Create articles based on long-tail keywords on the site
Should we create 5 or 6 to start with and publish them together, or publish one each week or so and use the opportunity to notify each one on Facebook etc?

    2) Create a Pintrest wall
We'll go ahead and do that. As above (1) - should we stick a whole bunch up to start with or one every few days?

    3) Tidy up any obvious on-page SEO stuff
    Titles, keywords, H1 etc

    4) YouTube - additional videos
Add some additional videos / interviews on our YouTube channel - maybe based on the articles we produce? Is it best to target the same long-tail keywords and use these in the video title and text description?

    5) Blogs / Forums
I'll get Rach (my lovely wife!) to join some forums and blogs and get involved.

    6) Traditional PR / People facing
Rach and Wendy are doing markets every couple of weeks around Auckland and we've produced some postcards with a discount code on them for people visiting the stall. We've also set up a page on the website where people can go after the market and enter an email prize draw to gather email addresses etc.

    7) Retial / Wholesale / New products
We're getting our products into retail stores around NZ slowly but steadily and listening to our customers and developing new products.

Things I'm going to need help doing:

I understand that whilst we're doing all the stuff above there are some other activities that we can organise in parallel.

Should we wait a few weeks until the articles / videos are all online before doing any of the below items. Or should be start doing these straight away along-side our other activities?

    1) Backlinks
I understand the importance of backlinks and I can see that there are lots of services on the site here offering to create them. Is it OK to do this now - or wait a while?

    2) Article submission
I know there are services to spin / submit articles - Should we look at doing this at the moment?

    3) Other packages
IamBaksi was very kind to suggest some services on the forums here. Again - should we get our ducks lined up a little more on the site content first or jump straight in and take up a couple of offers?

    4) Lastly - War Room Member
I can see that many of you are War Room Members - Is this something you think would be useful to me - or are my efforts best spent using the services on the forum?

Its a really nice looking site Craig. Content rich so plenty of spider-food for Google

Unless clients are already established with solid marketing war-chests, I rarely recommend Adwords from the get go personally.

I'd normally recommend getting the brand out there - though I can see you've already achieved that in Googles results *thumbs up*.

Have a play on Google Adwords Keyword Suggestion Tool and get an idea of what products are genuinely being searched for. Then compare those terms with Google search results to gauge competition. You'll be surprised at how many untapped opportunities are out there for products you provide that haven't been exploited.

Those are the opportunity-products I'd suggest optimizing your site for.
