How Do You Typically Renew Your Domains?

If you decide to keep them do you typically renew them by the year or for multiple years, or are you like me and have that depend on the domain and it's importance to you? I just don't trust the auto renew and renew manually. I'm always quite aware of how much time I have left before I have to renew and have often renewed a month or more ahead of expiration just to be on the safe side.

Seems like you answered your own question. Comes down to preference I suppose.

I renew all the important domain names for years, like all the domain names which are earning me money, none of them expire before 2016.
other non used or less important one, I check them at the beginning of year to see for how long to extend them..

Domain names which I buy for selling purposes, if I dont get offer on them for 1 year , I let them expire in peace.

I auto-renew all domain-names used for my affiliate marketing business.

My other domain-names (which I've bought for domaining/resale) I only ever register for a year, and certainly won't be renewing them if I haven't sold them by the end of a year. So in fact I almost never manually renew anything for one year.

Ditto. I am just getting into the buying/selling sites and domains under the tutelage of people who have been doing so profitably for at least a few years, and the one-year test was their advice, too.

    Hey Jon,
I use the auto renew on the domains for my main website and have never had any problems with it.

The thing I don’t trust about auto renew is the fact that they might put me down for 5-10 years at a higher price whereas I’d be completely in the driver seat when renewing manually. Not that the domain’s wouldn’t renew but I’d end up paying more for certain domains for periods of time I might not want to keep paying for. They also tend to omit the discounts and coupons when auto renewing and just charge you the full price.

I’m not sure if you get lower prices for renewing when the domain isn’t anywhere close to expiring as I haven’t really tried it. But I suppose anything is possible.

That's what GoDaddy does. I never auto renew as I want the chance to make a decision on whether to renew or not and that depends on the domain and how important it is to me. Some I allow to expire which I can't do if they are on auto renew. I usually buy domains for one year at a time or two years if they are important to my business.

I have some sites which are long term income streams that I have on auto renew, but I manually renew anything I got to test the waters with or try to flip, as it allows me to assess if it is worth keeping or cutting ties with.

One of the key things to remember is don't get addicted to buying domains you're not going to use. It's always tempting to buy a domain because you have a great idea for a site that never materializes, however only buy domains that you're either going to build out with products and traffic, use for affiliates or use as redirects. At the very least build a basic adsense layout on any that are generating traffic but aren't being used for current projects.

I auto renew all my domains as I don't have any that aren't working / earning for me. Ultimately if they're not making money are they really worth keeping?

Right! A lot of people keep domains because they think: ONE DAY someone will buy them for much money! Yeah, why should they? There are still tons of free domain out there and tousends expire every day.

When I find out my website has turned into a parked page

When you have alot of domains, you have them expiring all the time, and sometimes miss renewing them until you see this. Happened to me just yesterday :p

Truthfully, I depend on emails to tell me they are about to expire and I have to renew them. I should put it on a calendar, or somethin'

Manually! All the time, and for everything, not just my domain payments. I've had a lot of payments happening from my paypal account without me authorizing it, so I changed everything to manual payments.

I buy a lot of domains and test out a lot of projects (not just niche websites), so ya, auto-renewals won't work out for me.

I keep track of my domain names in two ways:
      1. I list them in an Access database table, so I can quickly view them in order of expiration date.
      2. I add them to my Outlook calendar, a week before they are due for renewal.

I always renew manually, as there is often a coupon to be used, or some incentive to transfer to another registrar.

For me, on my own main blog, I set it to auto renew for another year than multiple years (maybe next year I can commit to multiple year renewal). For my other niche blogs (depends if they give me stable profits), I will manually renew them for another year. But if they do not give me some effective results, of course I may not renew at all.

I renew my domains by the year at the moment. Though I may renew my domains for longer periods in the future.

I also try and renew all domains at least 2-3 months in advance before expiration.

I also do it all manually.

I never auto renew, unless I know that I definitely want to keep it - long term.

Even then I usually wait for the expiry date and renew just before, as I might change my mind and not want to keep that website and then it is just another loss for something I don't need.

Pre-pay for a number of years for your important domains, and use the auto-renew on top of that.

The majority of domains I auto renew as I find it much easier to manage. If it is an important or critical domain, i will renew it for multiple years.

I always renew manually because things change from year to year for me. I have one or two that I will never give up on though and those I buy for the long haul.

For some i set auto renew and for others i get email reminder.

However, if you are the type that mess with checking your emails regularly then use the auto renew otherwise you will be in for a surprise when someone else catches your domain name and ask you to part with hundreds or thousands of dollars to get it back.
