Question About Press Releases & There Effectiveness

I own an online auction house (not a penny site) and im interested in doing a press release for my next auction in July. Ive never done one before so had some questions about them.

1. What is a legitimate and quality company to do this for me?
2. If you have done one before, what kind of results did you get from it? Did you gain back links, get people to your site, etc?
3. What makes for a good press release? Any tips & tricks on what to look for?
4. Do you need to do these reoccurring to be effective or can you do them randomly and still see results?

    I once used a bunch of free press release sites to advertise a very unique concept and it worked very well. I gained radio interviews and 18,000 visitors in 1 week since the press released kicked off a viral effect. Obviously I was the exception and not the rule, but as long as you have something news worthy, press releases can work.
