What will be big in 10 years?

When it comes to marketing or domaining, if you can foresee trends you can make money.

For example, early buyers of domain names in the 90s made alot of money. They could buy great names for cheap prices which they later sold for tens of thousands or even millions of dollars. But they had to be able to foresee that domain names would be valuable, and then they had to be willing to take the risk to invest in them and hold them until they were worth alot.

Similarly, early internet marketers made alot of money. The more crowded the market gets, the harder it becomes (not impossible).

So what future trends do you think we can jump on board with now? In 2025, what will people be saying "If only I got in on this in 2013... I'd be rich today!"?

No one knows what will be big years down the road, they can only use educated guesses and pray they're right. My grandfather was told about Walmart when they were starting up and invested early with them and same with BRK.A (Buffet's Stock) he made a LOT of money in the stock market, but took great risks as he didn't have much money back then.

You need to talk to those who know their shit, you need to learn it too, so then through experience, skill, and educated guessing you have a much higher chance as knowing what will be big and what won't be big, but there will always be a risk.

Possibly people will be saying "If only I got into it 10 years ago" in a decade, but we won't know till it happens, so get involved now and put effort into it and you'll hopefully be doing well in ten years while those you know say "If only I did that when you did"

    Neuroprosthetics.
    Biologic Computing.
    Artificial Intelligence.
    Nanotechnology.
    Genetic Engineering.

If you can figure out a way to integrate these with marketing, you will be a millionaire.
Maybe buy out some domains you think will be in high demand, then auction them off.

      These are some interesting ideas.

I also think 3d "virtual reality" games, like the oculus rift might end up being something.

3D Scanning and Printing is going to be a huge industry within the next 10 years. Once the prices on the machines come down to an affordable level for the general public, an Amazon site promoting those products will be a huge hit.

I have to agree, huge future implications with 3d printing. Need a car part, no problem, just print it!

Only drawback I see is government interference/regulation which is necessary somewhat due to potential abuse.

I find your pessimistic prediction to be entertaining, false and damaging. But here's are some examples of people you would find yourself in good company with:

"Everything that can be invented has been invented."

      - Charles H. Duell, an official at the US patent office, 1899.
"Stocks have reached what looks like a permanently high plateau."

      - Irving Fisher, economics professor at Yale University, 1929.
"If anything remains more or less unchanged, it will be the role of women."

-David Riesman, conservative American social scientist, 1967.
"It will be gone by June."

      - Variety, passing judgement on rock 'n roll in 1955.
"Democracy will be dead by 1950."

      - John Langdon-Davies, A Short History of The Future, 1936.
"In all likelihood world inflation is over."

      - International Monetary Fund Ceo, 1959.
"Remote shopping, while entirely feasible, will flop - because women like to get out of the house, like to handle merchandise, like to be able to change their minds."

      - TIME, 1966, in one sentence writing off e-commerce long before anyone had ever heard of it.
"I am tired of all this sort of thing called science here... We have spent millions in that sort of thing for the last few years, and it is time it should be stopped."

      - Simon Cameron, U.S. Senator, on the Smithsonian Institute, 1901.
"The Americans are good about making fancy cars and refrigerators, but that doesn't mean they are any good at making aircraft. They are bluffing. They are excellent at bluffing."

      - Hermann Goering, Commander-in-Chief of the Luftwaffe, 1942.
"With over fifteen types of foreign cars already on sale here, the Japanese auto industry isn't likely to carve out a big share of the market for itself."

      - Business Week, August 2, 1968.
"... good enough for our transatlantic friends ... but unworthy of the attention of practical or scientific men."

      - British Parliamentary Committee, referring to Edison's light bulb, 1878.
"Everyone acquainted with the subject will recognize it as a conspicuous failure."

      - Henry Morton, president of the Stevens Institute of Technology, on Edison's light bulb, 1880.
"The horse is here to stay but the automobile is only a novelty, a fad."

      - The president of the Michigan Savings Bank advising Henry Ford's lawyer not toinvest in the Ford Motor Co., 1903.
"Flight by machines heavier than air is unpractical (sic) and insignificant, if not utterly impossible."

      - Simon Newcomb; The Wright Brothers flew at Kittyhawk 18 months later. Newcomb was not impressed.
"Airplanes are interesting toys but of no military value."

      - Marechal Ferdinand Foch, Professor of Strategy, Ecole Superieure de Guerre, 1904.
"There will never be a bigger plane built."

      - A Boeing engineer, after the first flight of the 247, a twin engine plane that holds ten people.
"There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home."

      - Ken Olson, president, chairman and founder of Digital Equipment Corp. (DEC), maker of big business mainframe computers, arguing against the PC in 1977.
"But what... is it good for?"

      - IBM executive Robert Lloyd, speaking in 1968 about the microprocessor, the heart of today's computers.
      "Radio has no future."

      - Lord Kelvin, Scottish mathematician and physicist, former president of the RoyalSociety, 1897.
There is practically no chance communications space satellites will be used to provide better telephone, telegraph, television, or radio service inside the United States."

      - T. Craven, FCC Commissioner, in 1961 (the first commercial communications satellite went into service in 1965).
      "Space travel is utter bilge."

-Richard Van Der Riet Woolley, upon assuming the post of Astronomer Royal in 1956.
      "Space travel is bunk."

-Sir Harold Spencer Jones, Astronomer Royal of the UK, 1957 (two weeks later Sputnik orbited the Earth).
"A rocket will never be able to leave the Earth's atmosphere."

      - New York Times, 1936.
"Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?"

      - H. M. Warner, co-founder of Warner Brothers, 1927.
"The cinema is little more than a fad. It's canned drama. What audiences really want to see is flesh and blood on the stage."

      – Charlie Chaplin, actor, producer, director, and studio founder, 1916.
"Television won't last. It's a flash in the pan."

      - Mary Somerville, pioneer of radio educational broadcasts, 1948.
"Television won't last because people will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box
      every night."

      - Darryl Zanuck, movie producer, 20th Century Fox, 1946.
"Rail travel at high speed is not possible, because passengers, unable to breathe, would die of asphyxia."

      - Dr Dionysys Larder (1793-1859), professor of Natural Philosophy and Astronomy, University College London.
"The world potential market for copying machines is 5000 at most."

      - IBM, to the eventual founders of Xerox, saying the photocopier had no market large enough to justify production, 1959.
"X-rays will prove to be a hoax."

      - Lord Kelvin, President of the Royal Society, 1883.
And on and on and on. But it's only been less than 50 to 100 years.

Probably nothing else of merit will happen again. Just saying.

      Thanks

    Look up something called BuyReply.

It's a service that allows people to 'buy instantly' from real life advertising. Billboards, magazines, TV, the cinema, restaurants, rock concerts and so on.

This is going to be a big part of eCommerce in the future. I help run an eCommerce store and I'm building an eCommerce mobile app for my company which will launch to a list of 140,000+ people but what we should be doing is moving towards a BuyReply way of business.

Think about it, you're at a football game and Ferez scores, within 30 seconds the big screen flashes "Text ferez to 55673 for Ferez's Shirt! Only £35.60! You have 3 minutes!" In 3 minutes 4376 cards have been charged, shirt sizes picked and a list of invoices sent to the Chinese manufacture, who will print the customized shirts within 24 hours, overnight airfreight will get your shirt ordered on Saturday turning up to your desk first thing Monday morning.

Perhaps it's a bad hangover for some, but you can't help but admire how brilliant it all is. Oh man I love making systems.

BuyReply is just one startup, there are several in hot competition to get ahead of each other. Worth looking into.

Not quite. Even the GDP in PPP China still trails the US marginally but should overtake in 2015, perhaps even next year. But in 2025 it will be very significantly bigger. And I imagine the US will fall further behind as it will not be able to brain drain emerging nations like China, India to the extent they do currently. Why go to the US when the opportunities at home are just as good?

I have some ideas on what MIGHT be big in ten years, but honestly, I don't spend much time thinking about it. There will definitely another social media website that will be as big, if not bigger, than Twitter, that's almost a certainty.

I think looking at trends would give us some clues on what might be big. Faithpopcorn's website has a link called "Trendbank" that's pretty insightful.

early buyers of domain names in the 90s made alot of money
People quote that statistic a lot - but so many newer marketers miss a big part of the story.

In the early years the cost to register a domain was $70-100. The pioneers online (John Reese was one as I recall) who registered various domains on the CHANCE they would grow in value - risked a lot of money to do that.

The perception of many is it was "easier" than it is now and I think that's hogwash. There were no big lists of affiliate programs - the general public did not trust making payments online - there was no Paypal until the late 90s.

We don't know what will be top of the heap in ten years - and chances are it's something we've not thought of. There will be risk takers and forward thinkers who profit from future trends - and most of us will take a "wait and see" instead.

My concern is the independence of the Internet 10 years from now. We are all enjoying now, to a matter of degree, what the U.S. Experienced in the 19th century which was a free market system. The closest thing the world had ever experienced as a laissez-faire capitalist system.

The powers to be will not allow this for very much longer. The Internet is still the wild west, with all the snake oil salesmen, scammers and the like but it should not be the function of any government to curtail these activities. Caveat Emptor.

My concern is government regulations can eventually kill Internet marketing and probably will.

    Why?
    1. Lots of advances in nuclear fusion being made.
    2. The benefits are awesome.
    3. We desperately need it before we suck the planet dry.

Well I've read from this interesting article of trends for the future of work that outsourcing of high level knowledge worker jobs are going to increase. So, I guess I suggest for us to spend time and invest on studying something (like IT Jobs) that's going to get you somewhere in the future. Make sure that it is something that you think wouldn't be automated.

I would follow the above advice.

Don't worry about what will be big in 10 years from now, but look for current evergreen niches that exist now. Those niches will still be big in 10 years from now, and some of them may re-invent themselves somewhat - but will still be in demand.

I don't see how one can even forsee that far in the future. For one with every technological advance in technology we advance that much farther that much more quickly.
I do not even see computers in 10 years nor what we consider the internet.

I see table tops, walls, refrigerators even with holograms of our desktop. I see maybe your brain working the computer by thought processes instead of using a keyboard but the very least it will all be voice by then for sure with programs that actually work to convert voice to text.

Really surprised at the amount of warriors saying - Just worry about the present. Ten years may be a little far, but any serious business person should be looking toward the future.

IM is not going to look the same at all in 10 years. In the past few years, some marketers' businesses have been decimated by Google updates and more recently by the changes in Gmail. It is impossible for a technology based business to remain stagnant. You are either moving forward or falling behind.

Y-Combinator, arguable the most elite start-up accelerator in the world, is specifically looking for people that are seeking the next big thing in marketing. That should tell you something. There is a huge opportunity for people that that can develop better ways to market products and services. Any rational marketer/entrepreneur will always be looking toward the future.

      I dont agree.

The internet is such an absurdly dynamic environment that it's impossible for small business (us) to foresee or plan 10 years ahead. Hell, I doubt Apple knows what product they'll launch in 10 years from now.

In my opinion, small-business Internet Marketing is an ecosystem with a short-term horizon (say 1 or 2 year or so). Whatever happens beyond is anyone's guess. I, personally, never plan beyond the following 12 months.

Investing in micro-gravity manufacturing companies. The field of material science is exploding with new startup companies resulting from experiments done over the past quarter of a century in low earth orbit. This will revolutionize industry far greater than the first Industrial Revolution. For example, tests performed on several shuttle missions have proven that in low gravity conditions, uniquely strong exotic metal alloys and other materials can be formed. Similar results have been found in semiconductor research that chips could be produced with speeds thousands of times faster than anything now available. And pharmaceutical manufacturing in LEO will result in new medicines and antibiotics with greater purity than anything produced on Earth. The cost of space entry is dropping rapidly, and in recent years, discussion of potentially large-scale commercial facilities in LEO has grown considerably.

I have often wondered this question and feel that though a few Fads will survive many will not have a place in the Market, so below I will have a few Fundamental areas that will still thrive in a decade.

#1 Energy- With the shortage of Oil and Gas it is important for all countries to find a number of energy sources that would allow their own economy to move forward (this could be from wind, water, natural veg/seed oil, solar etc)

#2 Big Data- In about 30-40 years it is claimed their will be around 9Billion people on the Planet. So better ways to get agriculture pushed forward and production done will be needed, using analytics and data to get things done faster, cheaper and while getting maximum resources. (But the Big data principle is not limited to agriculture, just this area is soooo huge)

#3 Information- With more people going to access the Internet over the coming years, they will need to find areas and places to learn and be entertained. So getting authority sites, apps, videos, products in place is going to be the big I feel.

#4 Security - As we all know traditional banking is dead. So with the influx of people coming online, in a more mobile way we need to find simple and safe ways for them to do transactions, so looking into data/mobile/computer protection is always good news for entrepreneurs.

    There's my 2 cents lol.

      At last... someone mentions Bitcoin!

In general "Cryptocurrencies" of which Bitcoin is one will be big and be used for a large chunk of online transactions.

I have seen a lot of threads on WF with negative reaction to Bitcoin, saying it is not trusted, not needed, or we don't need to worry about it. I predict in 1-2 years time there will be WSOs on the Bitcoin topic and in 2-3 years it will be a common payment method, with JVZoo and similar services accepting bitcoin for most of their money. The tipping point is when Paypal allows you to have a Bitcoin balance - and I think that is inevitable.

The other side of the 'coin' is they won't replace the currencies of countries that we are all used to (called 'fiat money') for maybe 50-100 years ... or never. Not because of tech reasons but more cultural.

We like our central banks, interest rates and currency that is stable in price but slowly loses value so that our house prices go up :-). Governments will have a hard time letting go of the control they have over the money supply.
