Investing in New Top Level Domains

Is anyone doing this? At least one company, United Domains, is letting you pre-register new top level domains for free. I have already chosen about 30 of them. I have no idea if they will really be available (the company does not guarantee it) or how much it will cost to register them.

This is a speculative field, as no one knows what will happen with these new domains. Many are location based, such as domain.nyc or domain.london. Other popular ones include .web, .store, .buy and many others.

I'm curious if anyone is planning to invest in such domains or has any insights into the possible opportunities that this might present. I'm also curious about the cost. I have a feeling that these domains aren't going to be cheap to register.

.com is the most valuable TLD. Unless you can grab a really amazing domain name, it's unlikely that you will make any significant income.

New domains are just a way for registrars to make more money. If it's not a .com/net/org and maybe a .info, you are just wasting your money. That site is lining up as many suckers as they can before they come out lol

After everybody has paid full price for these domains, you will be able to register those extension for $2.99

I remember when they made a big fuss about .co and now you can't even find a .co in use

I'm not so sure about that. It's not just one company, but an industry wide development. There's a lot of info about this if you search for it. Some are saying that it will completely transform the world of domains. I really don't know, but I'm keeping an open mind. A lot depends on how much they're going to charge for these domains. If it's some ridiculous price like $100+ I will pass.

It's an industry working together to make more money. That's like the oil companies saying let import less oil, to jack up the prices.

Yeah it's the industry hyping it up lol They see how the last tld's made them a ton of money, so why not release 50 new tld's?

I'm sure hotels.com is going to change to hotels.hotels lol

I don't doubt what you're saying, Alex. I'm just wondering if there's an opportunity here for small time domain investors to profit. Hotels.com is probably not going to change to hotels.hotels. But another company might pay a lot for hotels.web or Mainstreet.hotel.

This is, after all, all about business and marketing so naturally people are trying to make money from every new development

No. There never is. There is an opportunity for small 'investors' to get fleeced, though.

Domains are almost never an 'investment' although they're always portrayed as one. They're a rental - nothing more and nothing less.

Alex hit it on the head, the registrars are the ones cooking this up and selling it.

Not sure why you say that. Plenty of people have bought and resold domains, sometimes for large profits. I'm just not sure whether these new domains are going to be a good investment or not. This is a speculative market. It all depends if they become popular or not.

I would re-think the pre-reg...I am not doing it...WHY would you want anyone to know your great idea for a domain with no guarantee that you are protected?
I think the Holy Grail of domains will be when you can reg the .com and the .something that works with the word...NOT easy, would be expensive.

So you are suggesting that the company may be doing this just to get some good domain ideas and then steal them? I suppose that's possible. This is just a possible sideline for me, so I'm not taking it too seriously.

There are several threads here and namepros.com that suggested that has happened on GD and other registrar companies when you are hand regging. I just don't understand why I need to do this. For me .com is king...I MIGHT hand reg a few if I am lucky to catch a good new EMD and string. It is going a long time for the start ups to understand the new strings...

That is fine, you are entitled to your own views, I was just stating mine also

That same site is selling per-register trademark protection for those same domains, so they are playing both sides of the field. If someone lands a trademarked name, that same company will fight to take it away from you

It's all about making some extra money with all these new tld's

      Alex Blades/LarryC,

Oh well, finally I'm glad to see warriors can have different
points of view without getting nasty at each other.

I personally, will remain with .com
No need for me to change what's working.
I would do it if it's needed, but not at this moment.

I doubt they are trying to steal idea's although some may. They are just lining people up, so they make money from registering the domains through them.

Well, in the past people thought that .com was a key to success. but the time is changed now and domain names doesn't matter any more.

WOW! Why do companies spend hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions, if domains don't matter?...May want to re-think that statement.
