Competitor calling client a scam

My client has discovered that a competitor has a site/blog made to appear like a review site. They have a lengthy "article" reviewing my client's company's services and state several times that they are a scam and that the only truly trustworthy services are the author's. And of course the article comes up well in search engines. So what can we do about it?

With bad reviews, you can respond and constructively manage the conversation. But there is no place to comment or respond on this website. Do we have to go as far as a law suite to address the biased slander? I would hope there is a middle ground.

For anyone who has dealt with this situation in the past, I would love to hear what worked and what to avoid.

Thanks

Do they use the company's logo or have try copied any of the content from their website?

I'm not going to give out legal advice, but if the competitor has never used their services and are saying that they have, I'd say its worth at least getting in touch with an attorney.

Contact the site owner before suing. Let them know they have the choice of removing it, or being sued. Often times that's all that's necessary. If not.. sue em for lost damages & slander.

Chances are a suite for slander would be useless. Most states (Im assuming your in the USA if your not my apologies) will require proof that the statement caused actual monetary damages. Even if there are damages then they have to make a false statement in order for it to be slander. Saying someone is a 'scam' is NOT a false statement exactly because 'scam' could have a wide range of meanings. For example where I live its common for people to say a business that over charges is a 'scam'. In this case the word 'scam' is an opinion, and opinions are NOT slander ever.

In the end there is really not much of anything you can do about this negative review directly. The only thing to do is get as much good information out there in the public as possible to try and bury this review.
