I'm just wondering how to add things to wordpress. I'm considering upgrading to my own domain so I can monetize my blog. Can you use html for that or can you only use special wordpress things? If so where would you get them?

Thanks

Really? I tried adding a html optin form in my unpaid site and it didn't work. Probably because you have to upgrade. Thats good to know I can do this with just upgrading through wordpress with my domain I want.

Just because you start using your own domain with WordPress.com doesn't mean you get access to everything. They have different upgrades: Available*Upgrades — Support — WordPress.com

If you really want full control, signup with a company like HostGator to host your WordPress blog and they'll move over all your content for you.

I agree with this. Hostgator is the way to go. I have my site on wordpress and I wasnt aware of the technicalities. Hostgator support was tremenduous help. They were patient answering some of my may be stupid questions. Now, Im staying with them.

          Good day/evening.

You should focus on getting your own domain and hosting, as this will be beneficial to you in many ways. For example, support, file backups, extra storage and other services you will not get from free hosting on a Wordpress subdomain.

Domains go for around $13 annually, but you can get them cheaper.
Hosting should set you back about $4 per month. This is relatively cheap, and most hosting companies will even migrate all your existing content for free.

Once you have hosting and a domain name, I'd suggest you install a CMS (Content Management System) such as Wordpress or Joomla. Preferably Wordpress.

If you host a Wordpress database on your own domain you will be able to do the following:

1.) Edit your Wordpress templates/themes. (this involves accessing the files on your server and editing them, or creating new css files and uploading them via ftp. You can also edit them from the Wordpress dashboard.) Another option is to install themes by downloading them from an online theme store such as themeforest and then uploading them to your server.

2.) Install plugins via Wordpress or FTP. (There are literally plugins for everything. You just have to look. There are various plugins that handle optin forms for autoresponders, such as Aweber and Mailchimp.) You can also insert optin forms with HTML code from your Autoresponder.

On to the topic of monetization.
There are several ways to monetize your blog. I would encourage you to do research on the following, if you have not already done so.

          1.) E-mail/List marketing
          2.) Affiliate Marketing
          3.) Google AdSense

I have tried to cover each aspect of your question as thoroughly as possible, whilst keeping this brief.

          I sincerely hope this helps.

You should host any sites you work on yourself. Otherwise you are spending time creating web assets for other people/companies.

You can do almost anything you want on a self hosted install of Wordpress. It's a highly customizable platform and as such you are only really limited by HTML and CSS.

You are facing a steepish learning curve if you go at it yourself. If you can afford it get a Warrior Wordpress expert to set it all up for you. Or if you prefer to go at it on your own either search the forum for a free WP course or look on YouTube.

Make sure you look into security and set up your site(s) properly from day one. Security is obviously always important but as there have been a few hits on self-hosted WP sites do look into it. Or make sure whoever you hire has the security skills too.

Your question is a little general and, when you've started using Wordpress, I think you'll realise that it is actually a little meaningless.

I presume you mean that you want to add functionality, in which case you will often use a plug-in. Many of these are in the Wordpress repository and can be added from within your Wordpress dashboard. Once you've installed Wordpress you'll see what I mean.

What exactly do you want to add to your website? If it's a custom design then there are ready made themes available often for free. There's an editor inside wordpress where you can edit the main HTML and CSS files if you want to customize them.

For functional add-ons like menus, photo galleries, etc. you can integrate new plug-ins right out of your wordpress dashboard in just a few seconds.

Just make sure to start out by creating a "child theme" before anything else - otherwise any change you make to your site will be deleted when the theme is upgraded.

Right now I'm just using it for free and logging in on the wordpress website. I have a dashboard, but haven't figured out how to add things to it. mainly i wanted to add a signup form for my mailing list. Eventually when I get my own domain i'll add things like google adsense and market affiliate products. It's just technically i didn't know if i could do all this just by upgrading my domain but still using it through wordpress.com or if I had to use different hosting.

For hosted Wordpress.COM, you can't add third parties optin forms because they not permitted to use some html tags such as embed, frame, iframe, form, input, object, textarea that produce the form from external sites like Aweber, MailChimp, or GetResponse etc.

But, you could use their build-in widget called Follow Blog Widget : Follow Blog*Widget — Support — WordPress.com

The same rules apply to free or paid with domain mapping. They're generally not allowed third parties kinds of advertisement.

Only in some cases that they're described here: Advertising — Support — WordPress.com

You should use the self-hosted one Wordpress.ORG in your own hosting account like HostGator or others. You will have your own freedom of ads as well as adding, deleting, editing, or removing your codes on your own sites. Literally speaking, you could do nearly everything on your own sites of your own hosting account except following the hosting provider's TOS.

Thanks run for all your advice. I think I will just go ahead and have it hosted myself. It seems like what I want to do would be against their rules.

Maybe you or someone else would know this, but wordpress can work with any hosting service right? even free ones? I use weebly and intuit webhosting, and those are both ones you can drag and drop everything. I've never done a website any other way.

I couldn't say it's always worked with every hosting. But, mostly it should work. As free hosting, I've never experienced with other free hosts except 000webhost, and it works.

Just to remember, free hosting can not compete with paid hostings.

You will face some issue such as cpu & memory usage limit. Because they set a very low limit of cpu/memory usage, it mostly face with Wordpress itself. Not only these kind of issue but also there many issue will raise with Free Hosts.

As soon as you would be able to transfer Wordpress files to their server by using ftp/file transfer or softaculuous/fantastico, you're good to go to use Wordpress with those free hosts. Yet, Weebly is not a kind of them.

P.S: I'd not recommend to use Free Hosting!
