Not sure why you would think it is not good to put Adsense on authority sites ... ?

From what I've seen discussed in similar threads, I would think that most people's main two reasons would be (a) that it makes little sense to give people additional ways to leave your site (which typically pay you so little) rather than staying there; and (b) that it detracts greatly from the credibility and appearance of the site, making it very much harder for it to seem "authoritative" rather than "just another marketer's site"? Those (together with the fact that I happen to know that my traffic demographics hate it) would certainly be among my many reasons for avoiding it, anyway ...

Hmm... Establishing credibility is a must. Joining and posting in forums related to your niche can help build credibility. Not to mention the fact that your content needs to be as accurate as possible. I suppose the dos and don'ts change depending on the niche you're in.

      • Write good content
      • Write very good headlines
      • Use appealing images – 2-3 at least for every post
      • Use some videos
      • Do well on -page SEO for the articles and the images (I like SEO by Yoast)
      • Do internal linking between your posts (manually is better, but you can use this free plugin to automate this - SEO Smart Links)
      • Add social share plugin above and under every post

How about joining both? What could it hurt?

I think the important thing is no matter what the niche is, everything on the site should be looked at as something that adds value - and this includes the affiliate links and products.

Let's say I write an article on the best supplements to lose weight. It's a good article because I've tried them or spoken to people who have and I used this information to supplement my research. I would then add affiliate links to the supplements I mentioned.

I think this would be a good case to not use Adsense but I guess it all depends on the site.

Just make sure that the information that you'll be sharing on your site is something useful, something that will benefit your readers. Actively reply to all conversations you'll receive with all your blog post, in this way you will make your readers feel that they are important to you.

It is very open ended question, like others said, focus on two things

    1. Quality of content
    2. Building community around it

normally #2 follows #1 but #1 takes time. Those websites/blogs you see as authority, they have spent years writing high quality content before they became A lister. There is no other or easy way, otherwise everyone would had done it!

I think an authority site should provide ample resources for the visitors to gain more knowledge about the subject, the products available, the reviews and the experiences. Not just think of monetizing every bit of it, try provide genuine info that will help ... even if its for free.

And the most important -DO - 'do have lots of patience'!!

It hurts because it's a waste of time--time that could be spent doing things that are actually effective.
