Twitter About To Be Sold To Apple?

Hey Warriors,

A few weeks back it was Google that was hot on the tail of Twitter.

Now it seems that Apple may have nearly sealed the deal:

Apple is in late stage negotiations to buy Twitter for $700,000,000.

FOXNews.com - Tech Rumor: Apple in Talks to Buy Twitter for $700 Million - Science News | Science & Technology | Technology News

Whoever ends up winning the Twitter sweepstakes, it'll be interesting to see how they decide to monetize it.

    WOW...

I was surprised twice: the first time with the fact that Google did not finalize the deal and the second time now, after I read this post.

This morning I read some speculation that FIAT is going to buy GM Europe for a bargain price of 1bn euros (BBC NEWS | Business | Fiat's ambition and opportunism)

It is amazing what is happening lately and when you see big GUYS acting like this. That tells a lot, and as Scot said: let's wait and see their way of monetization...

Think of the implications if Apple were to consummate the deal and have Twitter as a main feature of the iPhone?

LMAO. That is pretty darn funny... but in reality a likely possibility.

Bet there will be a price somewhere along the line. How much is twittering worth? Interesting question.

Ahhh, there already is Twitter on the iPhone. It's called logging into Twitter on your iPhone... or if you're too lazy to open your browser, there's Twitterific, available directly form the Twitter site.
If you haven't been able to use Twitter from your iPhone yet, you're probably too much a twit to tweet... so says this twat.

And of course Google aren't going to buy it. It has no monetization method, is bleeding money left right and centre, and is built on amazingly unstable code that's easily exploited.

      LOL!

Best laugh I had all day!

On top of that, I have to say I agree with you about Twitter. Seems ridiculously overvalued at the moment and if any company shells out that kind of cash it would be a mistake.

Twitter has the look that is might just be a fad. But maybe I'm wrong...I said the same thing about fire, the wheel, Tiger Woods, and Google. So my "batting average" is well below the "Mendoza Line".

Not to mention that I LOVED, I mean LOVED, the "pet rock".

      Hey, nobody bats 1.000.

Twitter is not a fad. Some people get it. Others don't. I believe it has the potential to be a well monetized site. It just needs the right owner. If Apple ends up with it, you are definitely going to see some cool innovations with Twitter... er iTwitter.

It is almost replacing the text message... almost. If they improve their message system (not to be confused with tweets) I believe there could be some ad implementation in that area.

There is also the numerous services that do the in between tweets ads. You could likely see Twitter's owners running their own ad system and possibly disallowing those other services from existing on twitter.

Then there are things like the bubble tweet service. They could add video ads to the site via these bubble tweets.

Then they could also sell themes for twitter members. If they had really thought this through... all these biz models that 3rd party companies have implemented could have been at the core of Twitters biz model.

Can't believe Microsoft hasn't jumped on this one. It could position Microsoft to really create some competition for Google in the advertising arena.

This is definitely a good buy for Apple. If they go after the advertising models that could be applied to Twitter, then they will be in really good shape.

But for this to happen, they really need to improve the Twitter interface. It works well for users, but not for monetization. They need to implement some advertising on the site, and they could be placed on one side of the page or the other... and they could also implement some kontera-esque ads in the tweets.

There are dozens of ways for the site to be monetized. It just hasn't been put in place.

So those who don't think it will succeed "don't get it" and aren't the cool popular kids in school? LOL!

Or are we just not smart enough to get it?

To claim Twitter is even somewhat close to "replacing text messaging" is a reach...remember "Stretch Armstrong"...? Or Inspector Gadget? Really?

          "Go go Gadget-Arms!"

Yeah...that's just what people want - ADS in their text messages.

Selling Twitter themes? That's how they're going to monetize it? That's something many users want for FREE. Just look at MySpace.

Like I said, personally I feel Twitter is overvalued and might be a fad.

I know saying that doesn't make me "hip", but I'm just throwing out my opinion. Obviously no one wants to be a part of a fad, so those tied tightly to Twitter(I love alliteration!) are going to fight for it.

          Only time will tell.

That's not what I was saying. It was a general statement. Not meant to be applied in the "don't get it/won't succeed" grouping you put it in. I never said that was the best monetization of twitter, only that it was a potential method of monetizing the site.

Like it or not... its either ads or a membership fee. Otherwise they become the next WordPress totally free... which by they way sells tons of themes. I know they probably own at least one of those premium theme sites out there.

As far as the myspace reference... that is the worst site on the planet. I loathe that site... but that doesn't mean its not successful. By the way, there may be free themes on MySpace, but there are also premium themes for MySpace. Just like WordPress and Twitter.

Twitter has free themes, but they are pretty lame IMHO.

Yes I do remember the Inspector.

            That poor kitty. LOL

Everyone seems to be overlooking the Twitter search feature.

This has the capability to find what millions of people are interested in and talking about, in REAL time.

    There is HUGE value there.

That's the reason that Google was initially interested in it I believe.

Anyhow, I don't have an iPhone, so was not aware of the features it already has.

In 2000-2001, I started using Google more often for search -
because the results were relevant and more useful than other
      competing services.

In 2007, I noticed that I more frequently used Google Blog
Search to get updates on newsy items, and rarely the News
      section.

In 2009, I find myself looking first to TWITTER SEARCH for
      breaking news.

REAL TIME news, distributed peer to peer, AND collated
through a powerful search service - combined with easy
personal messaging - is what I believe will be Twitter's
      primary competitive advantage.

      But what do I know?

      All success

I'd be amazed if Apple bought them, doesn't seem a fit. On the other Google seems like the perfect fit for the reasons described in the previous post.

I could be wrong... but if Apple closes the deal on Twitter. It will be a game changer. Google will have to be on defense for a change. Microsoft is foolish if they don't jump on this one... but then again that's expected since the real brains behind Microsoft is no longer running things. Ballmer is a bit of a tool IMHO.
