Mike Filesaime physical/posted Newsletter for free? -what was his strategy ?

Did Mike Filesame have a physical printed newsletter (monthly book/magazines) posted out monthly to you?, where you didn't have to pay for it?

you only paid for postage costs

What was this magazine called, and what was this strategy? (as he wasn't making money on it if he was giving it away for free)

did he delivered only some people or to the all street if all street then it is allright, but he delivered to some people he may find via recipes, telephone companies... or internet ...

also maybe he got some promotions. but the one who really know says the best.

The reasoning could have been to sell advertising. Not only that he is in your face on a monthly basis to the point where you might find yourself looking for the newsletter. Also there are no distractions like flashing banners or the like. You can't just click away to something else.

I am fairly certain Mikes newsletter (which was called Marketingdotcom -- from memory) was released at the time when the big marketers were all into the free plus shipping offers. I don't think his newsletter was free. I am fairly certain only the first issue was sent to you free (all you had to do was pay shipping) and then you were charged monthly if you continued. He also did a big giveaway of his popular Butterfly Marketing script back then (free plus shipping again) to get people into his newsletter funnel.

Ahh, they were the days. No one even knew what a WSO was back then and marketers charged proper prices for all their products.

Yeah, well the thing with their free + shipping offers that were so popular years ago was that they usually priced the shipping so that it actually covered the shipping plus the cost of the newsletters, cd, or dvd they were sending.

So it was costing them nothing to get their newsletter in front of a whole bunch of new customers. Some would continue on with the monthly fee and so Mike wins.

    Two comments...

First, I believe his old offer was only for the first month free, and then you'd pay for the remaining months (kind of like a free trial offer). But either way, even if someone were to give something entirely away for free, it can still make sense as you get their name, e-mail, physical address, etc. to market to, and you can get a lot of leads taking your offer that you can upsell to.

It's kind of some of the basics of marketing -- you don't always have to profit from the immediate product or ebook you're giving away. The goal is to profit off upsells, later recurring, off the leads later themselves, etc..
