What is the best free method to drive traffic to my website?

Hello everyone,

I am pretty new to internet marketing and I am still learning. Does anyone have some good advice on the best free methods to drive traffic to websites? I have been using craigslist, traffic ad bar, traffic swarm, list joe, herculist, and posting on other free classified ad sites. I would really appreciate any advice someone can give me

Thank you
Nick

I still haven't found a great free way. Most of my business is coming from Google Adwords which of course costs. Mind you it depends what your site has to offer.

You need to give more specifics. Is it a product? A service?

Yeah I am quickly realizing not much comes free in the internet marketing business lol. But sorry about that I should have explained that a little more. I promote a membership to a motor club. I have had pretty good success with it because you earn $80 for every person you refer to the club, but I really want to find a way to drive a lot more traffic to my page. If you want to take a look to get a better understanding of what it is my website is homeincomeagent. By the way I am not trying to sell you on it or anything I would just like any advice you can give me on how to drive traffic to it. Thank you!

Driving decent traffic to it for free is very hard. I think the most natural way would be to get current customers to recommend it and share that info but I guess they want to keep such referrals for themselves. IMO you need to spend a bit of money promoting this and you also need to prove that this is a genuine successful way of making money.

Free / cheap things I can think of that you haven't tried:

    - You could try Ezinearticles on a topic like: 'how to earn extra money from home' and then link to your site in the resources.

    - Do a leaflet drop around local neighbourhoods. And rather than just point to the site, offer a free visit to explain the deal.

    - Ask friends and family to share the site via social media like facebook and offer them a small kickback for anyone who mentions their name in the signup.

Re the website, if I landed on that page I wouldn't sign up. Why? I see few trust signals. It's a one page website looks like it's been created in seconds. The video takes a little longer of course. If you're making money and have been around a while, then that website should look bigger and contain more trustworthy information. You could for example:

    - Get testimonials from happy customers to pad out the site.
    - Provide more information about the deal.
    - Case study successful users of it.

That kind of thing. Also explain the benefits of the motor club signup. If I read it right the person that signs up also gets club membership. So what benefits does that give that they might like?

Once the site is better, I'd then consider what your profit is from each sign up. Also what the percentage of visitors converts to a sale. Then consider how much you're prepared to pay to get a lead.

Then consider what searches people might type in to a search engine to find your site. Like 'make money from home' or similar. Try Google's keyword checker for ideas that aren't so high in competition. You could also target things like 'motor club membership' to try and tempt people already debating joining the motor club.

Then consider and carefully implement a Google adwords campaign. Of course you need to make sure your conversion rates give you an acceptable amount of profit. That's really a bit of trial and error. Start small and grow it if it's successful.

    Hope that helps!

Social shares, press releases, videos still work.

Create pages about certain niche topics on Facebook. My wife shares stuff from a stupid Chihuahua page all day long lol. A Dallas Cowboy page made by some normal Joe, I even read stuff on. People search for those niches in Facebook. The users are more aware that there is info there now, that may interest them. Just pack it with a lot of content. People will share it, and it will snowball. Not all of them will be winners, but some will.

After the content and users are built up, you can also post ads in there from various affiliate networks. (Use your own products and make more.)

Videos, use a cliffhanger approach. Use interesting content, and leave them hanging to where they have to go to your site to see the rest of the information.

Prlog, and many of those places still rank...

If you're someone who has been trying to make it online... The first thing you want to do is forget about:

      Make Money Online
      Insurance Quotes
      Acne Cures

And all the same tired old niches you see over and over. Because those are the main one you see in MMO products, that teach you how to make money.

Now I am not saying don't go after those niches. What I am saying is try something easier at first. (I personally am all for going where the competition is, because that is where the most money is.) But, take a slower road first, so you don't get frustrated.

Actually check out Donald Wilson's example he just posted about something very similar, that you could be doing. I saw him post the video on Facebook, and it was very similar to the strategies I suggest to many people.

      http://marketingwithdon.com/blog/

Which kinda of gives you a visual representation of some of what I am suggesting. But you will also come up with some of your own ideas.

Funny, I think he even mentions a Chihuahua page. Probably the same one my wife shares stuff from all the time lol.

          Hello IMStarter,

No, I actually haven't tried using videos on youtube yet. I really should look into doing that though because the product that I am currently promoting is all over youtube and all the video's on it get a lot of views! Thank you for the tip, I have been so busy writing articles and classified ads, etc that I haven't even thought of using Youtube yet. Also thank you for the Leo comment lol he actually justed turned 1 year old yesterday there such cool little creatures haha

If you answered yes to any of those questions, you might as well find a 9-5 because you are going to fail.

              Try:
              Scoop.it

Convert the content for differen't platforms:
Powerpoint - slideshare, slideboom, authorstream, sliderocket
PDF - scribd, YUDU, Box, docstoc
              Audio - soundcloud

Blogging communities - Blog engage, Famous Bloggers.

Online Magazine Racks - alltop, affposts.
I obviously over trivialized the process. I also made that sentence in jest. Yes obviously there is more to it than that. But the fundamental process of building a quality site... works. While that quality site is built... you need to gain an audience. The best way to do this (for free) is to gain search traffic related to your target market. Obviously this isnt 100% or my main point. The overall idea I was trying to get across is the effort of putting in quality content and HARD work to build a site. Most people seem to think its "quantity" or "keyword density" that matters... forgetting that the TRAFFIC is actually real people... and if your content is a joke... they'll see you as a joke too and quickly leave.

I've built many sites using this method. Although I'll admit I've NEVER used just one traffic source (or relied on Google completely... ever). But, as a starting point for someone new... it can work. If you build a quality site with quality content that doesn't exist yet in the market (or isn't doing a good job) you have a real "chance" at being successful. Strategically position yourself and you have a better chance. Who said Capitalism was bad?

Thank MovieFigures! That was a lot of good information. Like I said I am still pretty new to the Internet Marketing business. I see you mentioned adding more information about the benefits and such. I don't know if you actually opted in and put your e-mail and number in or not, but once you do that you are redirected to another page with a lot more information. Regardless, I still think the site needs work because I am only getting about 5 sign ups for every 100 that visit the page, which isn't terrible but i'd like that to be higher. I really like the program that I am promoting because everything you see is actually true, but I am having a hard time finding a way to prove that to everyone! I think I will try to get some testimonials from some of the people I signed up like you mentioned that's a good start! Thanks again

The best and always effective method... build a site with quality content. Have a couple inbound links so Google crawls it.. and bam thats it. Google wants quality content, so give it to them. Yes there are tons of other ways to build traffic (for free), articles, forum postings, youtube videos, etc. etc. etc. But the tried and true method... the method that is the most honest and will ALWAYS work is building a site with quality content. Start a blog if you arent tech savvy. Fill it with your own written content (or hire someone to write content). Make it unique, fresh, and engaging. Worry less about keyword density then how entertaining/informative it is. This takes a lot of work and effort, but if you do it right... it'll pay off.

For new people, or people that haven't made any money yet... Understand this:

The work and effort required is a lot. Don't kid yourself if you're new to the online game.

Seriously, I work incredible amounts of hours per day for new projects. You have to be willing to sacrifice, some until you start gaining the knowledge and skills you need.

When it comes to free traffic, SEO still wins hands down but many people do want instant free traffic. If you want hundreds of visitors a day, then I would still use seo as by the time you try YouTube, Forums, Articles you could of build a site with superb content and some links and given time, Google seeing your site as an authority.

You don't need a large site either, look at many industries outside of the IM niche and some are 30 pages in size because they offer all the info you need on that subject. There is no need to post every day, week.. have a look round and you will see it to.

Anyway, get a great site developed and it will be so much easier to attract and earn links then that traffic will come. If you were opening a bricks and mortar business, it still takes time to get visitors in your door so treat this as a business and the rewards will come.

The traffic is there for the taking with some work

If you talk about free SEO I will be assuming you are referring to stuffs like web 2.0, blogs, article directories and others.

Well, it's largely going to be based on the site you use, some sites have more traffic than others.

Below are my few list of free traffic source:

    Web 2.0 like hubpage, Squidoo
    Press releases
    Classified ads
    Targeted blog comment
    Signature
Grow your social media account, Spotify Streams, YT Views & IG Followers & More

Reddit traffic sucks. I actually was brought to Reddit over 5 years ago to try and drive traffic to my website and have since learned that Reddit is for entertainment only unless you can provide real value. They do not take kindly to spam or sell-y sort of people. Reddit is sort of my online home these days and I try not to poop where I eat.

And while you CAN drive traffic from Reddit, the quality of traffic is terrible if you are looking for clicks, sign ups or any kind of conversion - unless you truely have some kind of unique proposition that would interest a specific subreddit. The bounce rate is always huge.

My advice is to not spam Reddit. Digg sucks anyways, so sure. Stumbleupon is ok.

Since you're talking about direct traffic versus SEO driven traffic from search engines, your best bet is to advertise on related niche forums. You could use a signature line or where allowed, the promotion section of the forum. You could always offer a freebie such as free software or ebook download (with email signup) to induce click through.

press releases and article sydication. Get infront of your most likely candiatates or most likely prospect.

These two are a bit more running around or leg work if you may, but the results are 100 times better. A really well written press release can bring in mass subscribers and sales over a few days, even a few hours. There is real power in this, trust me.

There are some cheap SEO and backlinking services offered on Fiverr. Then, you can use social media. Twitter is good because if you use a hashtag people search for they will find your tweet thank links to your site. Pintrest is good too because people will repin your pin and your site will get around. Then find other similar sites and trade links with each other- you link to their site and they link to yours.

I will say blogging. Blogspot is good, and can get you hundreds of hits per day... but you dont own the landscape. Meaning your account (and years of content) can be instantly removed, deleted, and banned by Google for no good reason. Stick with Wordpress, and blog often about topics in the niche you're in.

As per Google latest Penguin 2.0 update Google will get you more traffic free if you improve on the following 3 major points

    1. Quality back links- Back links from reputed sites will improve your site SEO value but link from a spam site will reduce your site's google credibility.

    2. Quality Content - You must have quality and unique content that has an audience base. You must update the site with new unique content.

    3. Social Sites - Regular updates on social sites will improve your site's crediblity. Not only that Google is likely to place those fan pages in better rank in search.

I think if you concentrate on 3 things along with normal SEO of your site pages you will get a lot of free traffic through google either directly or via social sites.

There's plenty of advice you could get. My advice? Try two resources in particular; Moz and Econsultancy. Become a smarter digital marketer. If you're a self-starter, these are the best two websites for online marketing IMO.

I would say it depends on what you are marketing. If it's about making money
then Craigslist is where you want ads. If other people are there with a similar offer then you can make money there too. I will never forget 3 years ago is when I placed my first ad and made money in 20 minutes. From then on it was how can I learn how
to do this better and better so my income will increase. Educate yourself in the direction you wish to go, test and retest when you find success amp it up to the max
and you will always have income streams.

All of the popular social networks work great for me.

My favorites are YouTube & Facebook.

You want highly targeted traffic for the best conversions, so I would create content specifically for your niche and post it on Facebook and Youtube with a link to your website.

You could also try eZines and you could create a blog.

    Hope this helps!

    All the best,
    Josh

I have always been fond of signature advertising in your chosen niche on forums. Of course instead of money you are still investing time. So I guess you pay either way you go?

Create a brand. Make sure you use the same picture on Facebook Page, Twitter, Linkedin is the first step because people will start to recognize you.

Next step is to ask yourself, "Who is my customer and what fears, hopes, dreams do they have, and where do they hangout?"

Once you ask yourself those questions you'll know where the best place is to generate traffic and you'll have the ability to create content that they actually want to read.

The next thing you need to do is to start converting those people into your email list. Run a/b split tests to see what is working and what isn't so that you can constantly work towards growth.

Use analytic tools to track everything and I mean EVERYTHING you possibly can to see if changes impact your audience positively or negatively.

If you need any help just PM me and I'd be happy to help!

I would argue that philosophically there is no such thing as a free lunch. However, I won't be an a**hole. :-)

Here's my 2 cents. The best method of "free" traffic is not at all coincidently the best marketing you can have: word-of-mouth marketing. How on earth do you get people to talk about you? Here are the main steps as I understand them in order of importance.

      1) create value/solution
      2) implementation of delivery of value/solution
      3) uniqueness of value/solution
      4) target specific niche. Example: don't just focus on dogs, but single out Chiwawa owners.
      5) Find a way to market to a community area for your niche topic where people are meeting/congregating (physically & virtually) Example: Dog conventions or local Chiwawa clubs or various chat rooms, social media groups, blogs, etc.

My Mom started an music education internet business in 2005. She never marketed it online at all. She didn't even know what SEO was, and Facebook was only 1 year old. I was proud of her, because many women her age thought that the CD drive was a cup holder. But, lo and behold, by 2011 she had 45,000 students. (today we've got 85,000 in 50 countries). How did she do it? It sounds like magic. The truth is, she has been involved with music education since 1980. She is an internationally recognized expert on music technology. She was the technology coordinator for the Music Teacher's National Association (MTNA) for 17 years. And she did have a booth at MTNA every year. That was it! People talk when there is a good product that meets their needs. It also helps when they trust the person to care about their needs because they are a recognized expert or veteran of the industry.

How do you become an expert? Write a book! That is the fastest way to gain credibility as an expert.

    There is no FREE traffic.

Don't fool yourself in believing that.

You can either buy traffic or you can spend most of your time trying to get " FREE TRAFFIC".

Yes you can leverage . But that is also not free.

If you are trying to promote a motor membership, have you thought of thinking where your target market might congregate online - like forums, blogs etc - find those blogs and forums then look at what members are posting as issues problems etc - answer some posts on the forums with your motor membership as a signature link. If you find where you target market hang out then put yourself in front of them by adding value and helping solve problems you should get noticed that way. Just a suggestion...

Go and listen to her video on getting traffic and it's all free.

Get a big bumper sticker then drive around on the loop in circles all day. Make sure you hit your breaks quite a bit so they see the sticker and are close enough to it.
