Pointed nameservers from godaddy to hostgator (almost 24 hours now) but still can't access site

Everytime I go to my domain, I get a instantfwd.com landing page that has a bunch of links sending you to random sites on the internet.

I called GoDaddy they said my nameservers are appropriately pointed to hostgator's name servers and they updated it early this morning.

I called HostGator and they said it takes 24-48 hours to propagate through all the systems. I run openDNS and I've never had this problem before...

Any thoughts? I'd be glad to pm the domain to helpful individuals (I dont have privacy enabled on domain so rather not post it).

Actually Domain Propagation will Take 24 to 48. However If your Nameserver cannot be propagated in 48hrs, Just contact Hostgator to forcefully replicate the Domain Name Server. I hope this will Help you.

I have never had a problem. Depending on what you are doing double check the DNS settings also make sure your account hasn't been shut down. Normally I have only had to wait 5-10 minutes tops.

If it's a new account or new domain it may take longer - there's no real standard except the 24-48 hrs given. Mine usually go much faster but I've had a couple domains that took 3 days.

If you re-enter the information...the process starts over and will take longer.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

Normaly it takes a few hours, as well if providers mean it can happen up to 48 hours. When the page is not up in ca. 4 hours, I do a refresh and this will help in the most cases.

It all depends on the TTL settings. Check the correct time that it will go live.

Basically it stands for time to live. Different set of propagation takes different amount of time. TTL of 3600 stands for 1 hour. So, 86400 means it will take a day to update.

That answer would make sense if you had posted it years ago when TTL still mattered lol - nothing is going to speed up the process of your nameservers propagating - and it's going to happen at different times for different people.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! The domain is NEW. I purchased it the day before I purchased the hostgator hosting as well. So both are new.

Normally I experience 10-20 minutes before my domain is transferred to my reseller account but I guess it's because the domain has been in existence for a while.

We're coming up on 36 hours now so hopefully it'll start working soon. I have a wordpress installation at the CLIENTIP/~home that I'm waiting to be pointed to by the domain.

I just pointed a second domain that I have owned for six months over to hostgator and added it as a subdomain onto the baby plan at hostgator. It took all of 5 minutes before I could install wordpress and log in to my dashboard on that domain....

Is it just simply the fact that the domain was only a day old when I changed the nameservers that it's taking so long to propagate?

I also accidently changed the nameserver the first time to ns1.hostgator.com and ns2.hostgator.com before I changed it to the correct ns6---.hostgator.com etc. So I wonder if that had an effect.

    It can, too.

Most of mine, over the years, have propagated within half an hour, but I've also had occasional ones which have taken more than 48 hours, for no apparent reason at all. I think it's one day too early to be worrying.

Strange! I also use godaddy and hostgator. Updating the NS’s on godaddy never has taken longer than a few minutes.

Hmmm, I always register with namecheap and point the DNS to hostgator and then add the domain inside my cpanel. The whole process is completed within 10 minutes and my site is up not more than 20 minutes.. That problem is strange. DNS propagation nowadays is fast and should be done within 2 to 12 hours with hostgator,..

I'm surprised not one person on here asked you to actually check what's being reported.

Why the useless rambling and not something actually helpful?

    Use:

    http://intodns.com/yourdomain.com

    https://whatsmydns.net

Both of those will give you an update on what's going on.

For the comments on TTL - yes, it does matter & lowering the TTL will help things propagate faster. I can't believe someone even clicked the "thank you" button for posting ridiculously false information.

Also, for those who don't understand how DNS works, a brand new domain should work almost immediately. You have a problem somewhere - use the links I provided above to start troubleshooting.
