Advantages vs. Disadvantages to creating your own aff program

I'm pretty new to this IM niche EDIT: Not new to Internet Marketing though! (although I really have no intention of getting into it in the near future ) and I notice the majority of people DON'T have their own affiliate program, but instead use one of the main affiliate services like clickbank, CJ, shareasale etc.

For the most part I've always run my own or promoted affiliate programs that only had their own products, subscriptions and services based on the fact that there's no middle man (affiliate program service).

What are some of the Advantages & Disadvantages you find in creating your own affiliate program versus using a service like clickbank?

I have my own affiliate program, and love it to bits.

I think the major advantage is that you can keep all of the buyer's details and customise what information you need from them (for more marketing opportunities, woo!)

Although the main disadvantage is that you're responsibile for the upkeep of the affiliate service and sorting out any issues which may arise.

The hardest part is finding affiliates. Clickbank has what, like 100,000 who are all ready to sell your product in 2 clicks.

With promoting your own affiliate program, you can offer higher payouts which attracts affiliates. Any good affiliates don't just rely on their affiliate networks to find products to promote. One thing I do is search Google for something like "**** cleanse affiliate" or "wrinkle cream affiliate program" to find independent product vendors who will offer higher payouts than a vendor who pays a network which in turn pays me a little less.

In fact I got an offer from a dating company in my inbox this week to promote them directly. Apparently I emailed someone at their company about it months ago and never followed up. I started promoting them through an affiliate network back then, and finally they caught up with me and claimed they had been trying to reach me (don't know how they missed me, but whatever). Anyway, the payout working with them directly is about 25% greater than what the network is offering. What do you think I chose?

That makes me think of another point. Who says you have to choose one or the other? Why not do both (like the company I mentioned, as well as many others)? There are even companies that use several affiliate networks in addition to their in-house solution. If you search a network for a product, and you find a product isn't an "exclusive offer," chances are they are being offered on several networks because the company doesn't want to leave any stones unturned - and neither should you.

      My 2 cents!
