Finding work then outsourcing it?

Not sure exactly what this strategy might be called..but

Basically...

Find someone in need of a website via, elance, pph, odesk...
Get a deposit
Then outsource the work to people on elance, pph, odesk...

How viable of a process is that, and what do you think the best way to go about that would be?

Funny I was thinking about that today. My thoughts are that if you can find strong resources who can do specific pieces of work and can follow instructions it could work well.

  • I think you need to first see if its possible to earn from that kind of business model. Like get estimates of how much it each project costs as opposed to how much you would have to pay to outsource it. I think you also have to consider how much competition you would have.

If you can fulfil these simple steps then it can work and be worthwhile:

      1. Have better sales skills than your competition and use your skills to be able to win business while charging more than everyone else.
      2. Find excellent, trusted people to outsource to, and make sure you're paying them substantially less than you're receiving.
      3. RECOMMENDED: Make sure your payment terms with your client are more preferable than the payment terms you have with your outsourced helpers.
      4. OPTIONAL: Add your own additional value to the project to surpass your client's expectations.

I haven't yet worked out if this concept is deceitful, but I don't think it is - after all, many business transactions in all walks of life are contracted and sub-contracted and sub-contracted again. As long as the work gets done to a satisfactory level on time and within budget I think it's OK.

Being the middle man is never a bad idea
To begin, you can start by simply contacting some companies and getting an idea of the industry you are interested. Get ideas for quotes, project timelines, resources required and proper documentation.
Next, you can find open projects on various websites and start bidding on them. Once your bid is accepted, get going !

It's called the middle man in traditional business, and online it's commonly referred to as arbitrage.

People need work done. If you know the quality outsourcers and can help them achieve what they need done in a timely, professional manner.. there's no reason why you don't deserve monetary reward for your efforts.

The key is finding outsourcers you can rely on for quality work. If you hire the wrong person, it's on you to fix it.

If you were to start a career make sure that you have a background in that field and that your interest is also related to it.

I think it could work, but only if you have your own website development skills (ie. to make small fixes, change mistakes, etc. if your outsourced workers mess up and you need a quick change).

I was once told, also, that if you are outsourcing you should have 2 accounts on Elance because if your account shows both purchases and work completed people will automatically assume you outsource everything and be turned off. Not sure how true that is or if anyone else has thoughts on it.

Outsourcing is OK if you're upfront about it, but you should really be telling your clients that you have a "team" and that you're not the only one working on the project.

When finding a job and outsourcing it, you gotta consider how easy the job is and how you can explain that to the person you're going to hire to doing the job. The last thing you want is to be in deficit

I'm a coder, I've attempted the freelance thing. The competition is ridiculous when you must compete on a global scale. Being from the U.S. and paying US prices for life is a huge disadvantage when you are competing on a global scale.

The key is to build up your account so that you have a large body of work and a perfect record. Then you can start to score the work that pays more. My guess is that you will need to make some sacrifices on profits until you get to that point.

I tried and tried to get the freelance thing going and I experienced people not wanting to pay what you are worth and wanting more than they advertised. Then when they complain you are on the downside of the negotiation with mediators because the other side is the side with the money.

Just my .02. Take it for what it's worth. Good Luck.

It is one of the most common strategies to make money online. There are thousands of people who act as the middlemen between clients and workers. But of course, you need to find workers who are reliable and deliver as promised. Give it a go. If you are good at finding clients it should be a walk in the park.

It's also called being a broker. This is a very viable strategy and can work very good.

I've made a full time living online with that type of method, in fact I just created a full course explaining the system I've used. Just as deb mentioned I employed the phrase "my team" a lot...

As for it being deceptive, I don't think it is and here's why...
The service providers that do the work themselves usually don't have time to supply top notch customer service, while I waited for someone else to do the work I was able to give my clients 1 on 1 support and in that light, it's worth it for them to pay a bit more..

I've been thinking about doing this also. Question I have is what would be a reasonable percentage to figure for my efforts?

Being a middle man is a business model that will always work. It is a real evergreen business model. You don't have to be an expert in the skills that you are trading.

In fact, I had myself been a middle man when I was a University student, it was a nice way to make some income. All I had to do was to communicate with my clients and workers in a couple of emails per day and I would get a nice paycheck for it.

Of course, it was not as easy as finding work on elance and then outsourcing it again on elance. I could write a whole ebook on the method I used in those days, and it will still work today.

Think, Innovate and do it Smartly.
