Help needed on naming website

I'm working on a project for a client and need a little help on choosing the URL. The company name is Milton Home Remodeling.

Should the URL be:

Miltonhomeremodeling
miltonremodeling
miltonhr

Should it be miltonremodeling with miltonhomeremodeling forwarding to it? or would miltonhomeremodeling carry a little more SEO weight with miltonremodeling forwarding to it for simplicity?

or... is miltonremodeling easier for everything including email?

anyone have an opinion? thanks

I really Don't Know that Domain Name effects the SEO? Its really a Strange to me. There are lots of site who's domain Name is different from what it is. Like Godaddy.com It is a Domain Registration and Web Hosting Company.

True, but every little thing can help. The domain name will be seen by searchers in the SRP's so it's possible that using the full name would help click-through-rate and in turn helping SEO. It's also good for initial trust factors and things like that. GoDaddy happens to have a very powerful marketing campaign which help with brand recognition. There are certain drawbacks in having a long domain name though and that's where the decision is being debated for me.

    Hi everyone,

I would use the longer version but I would also buy the short one and redirected it to the original one.

Because someone can register similar web page and profit from your hard work

All the best and see you on top

    Erwin.

I'd go with the 2nd for the same reason you mentioned. MiltonRemolding is easier to remember.

Focus and think about the people you're marketing to, instead of Google.. Google isn't going to be making any purchases from Milton Remodeling.

The easier you can make it to brand yourself and stick in people's mind.. the easier it is for them to take action. The domain should be used across all forms of marketing, not just the internet.

I agree. For a company, you want to brand not just think about SEO.

Keyword filled domain names for SEO purpose is old story. Very old. These days, Google is totally against exact match keywords and generally keyword filled long domain name can only have negative effects, if any. Use domain name for branding, not SEO. I would support your initial idea of miltonremodeling with other names forwarded to it.

Weblover, would you please point me to your reference where Google has said or implied this? I would really like to know where this idea came from.

      Andy (op),

I don't believe that Google penalizes or slaps you with "negative effects" from having your exact name in your domain. If it is still available as a dot com, I would register your exact name without hesitation. You can do that for under $10/year and always redirect traffic coming to that name to your web site (if you get a different domain for the web site).

Having said that, I don't think that it is critical that your company web site URL be your exact business name. It should be short, memorable, and brandable and avoid confusion with other existing similar names and businesses.

I don't like Miltonhr as the acronym "hr" in business typically stands for "human resources."

      Good luck to you,

      Steve

This is old news. If you're going to have an EMD, which I wouldn't bother with since this update, you'd better have a lot of high quality content.

And so we have been thinking about adjusting that mix a little bit and sort of turning the knob down within the algorithm so that given two different domains, it wouldn't necessarily help you as much to have a domain with a bunch of keywords in it."

Use the full name. Naming a company name has nothing to do with creating a domain name like Google - since that's THEIR company name. Using a long name is not really bad as long as its memorable.

Not this one. It's not the right branding for them, presumably, and "HR" widely stands for "Human Resources", these days.

Which will carry more SEO weight (if there's any difference at all) is scarcely relevant here, surely? This is about branding, credibility and appearance, rather than SEO, isn't it?

If "Milton Home Remodeling" is the company's name, and is what someone says when they answer the phone, and is what's always been printed on the company's notepaper and invoices and so on, then you'd need a very compelling reason not use "miltonhomeremodeling.com" for the site. If they want to re-brand themselves completely as "MHR" or something, that's a slightly different matter, but barring that, I don't see much of an issue, here?

Actually you're exactly right... it was more about branding now that I think it over. However, I think a URL has a lot to do with SEO. Maybe not in the sense of direct juice but in it's branding across the web.

Exactly - SEO has absolutely nothing to do with naming a company. If you're creating a niche website or fun blog, you can focus on an SEO-related name. But if you're trying to name your company, forget about SEO.

    andymisiu,

Rule # 1. Do not disclose the full domain name.
Wont be the first time someone takes it and try to sale it to you later on.
Anyhow, the dot com version of the first two are already taken.

The good news is MiltonsRemodeling DOT COM is Available.

Keyword first if possible i.e as the prefix.

Unfortunately, I couldn't get the prefix and had to settle with the suffix. Still, regardless of whether you go for a prefix or a suffix, try and keep it short i.e < 10 characters if possible, < 8 is ideal.

I believe Miltonhomeremodeling will be the best due to it's specificity. It tells exactly what your the site is about. Additionally, I feel it will assist with your SEO endeavors. I think you are on your way to success because you are taking the time to gather opinions before venturing into this brutal market. The opinion of others could make or break your operation/business model.

After reading some comments I think it is important to have the word "Home" included in the URL and the company name for both consistency and branding. Having the word "Home" included helps to explain exactly what the company does by it's name.

    Hello,
Your website is related to home remodeling service, then you choose your domain name with company name followed by your service. It is better in both aspects such as brand name and SEO purpose also.

Actually, you don't have this option as it is not available, but the name I would choose is simply Milton dot com. Short, memorable, brandable, not packed full of a bunch of crappy keywords.
