Full time affiliate marketers - What do you say you do for a living?

I quit my job back in November 2012 and went full time into Internet Marketing. Still to this day, I haven't come up with a socially acceptable way of explaining what I do. If I do try and explain into some detail, I usually get a reaction something like this:

Also another thing, why do people assume we do nothing? (Or is it just me?) I've noticed if I use the term 'work from home' people seem to convert that into "you sit at home and do nothing all day"

Know the feeling! When I first started I would just say I did "online marketing consulting". Then I created a successful blog and now I just say "Google me b1tch" lol

That's a pretty good way of saying it actually, might use that from now on.

Make it simple for the unwashed masses.

    "I write books"

    or

    "I write software".

Otherwise you'll have the uncomfortable notion of trying to explain something to someone who has no idea.

And then the negative assumptions & connotations come into play.

    So.

    You're a software developer.

    Or an author.

PS: The reason why people "assume we do nothing" is because the majority of humanity is programmed.

    Unfortunately..

    They're programmed for slavery.

So when you dictate that there is some type of atypical release, it's an uncommon occurrence.

And, they assume you're a drug dealer, spammer, or mobster.

So, so true! One of my mates has actually jokingly implied before that I probably "scam people"

      Funny world.

My family actually thought I was a bum until i bought my own apartment and moved out (being pretty young as I am).

Even then they thought I was onto some kind of dealing, which when i sat them down i showed them step by step how I do what I do, people fear what they don't understand (a classic but true cliche)

Just say you are an Internet writer, or you sell other people's stuff online, or you publish information websites, or ......

99% of the people I talk to are very envious I take a 30 second commute to work everyday and some days I commute to the lake and do not even work at all.

It took me a while to come up with an explanation for what I do as a cpa affiliate marketer, but to make things simple I just started saying "I have an online advertising business." If they ask for further details I tell them that I buy advertising and send traffic to online companies and get paid commission based on results they receive. At this point I usually try to just change the conversation

Apparently, if you say you work from a home office, it sounds better to others.

Change your social circles... If people can't accept what you do, then you don't need them in your social circle. Hope things go well for you in your work, like you say some people think that working from home means an easy life, but it's the hardest thing you can do! All the best

I'd just say what I do and then maybe say "want me to help you do what I do so you can work from home too?"

I tell people I'm an affiliate marketer on the internet.

I'm often surprised by how many people understand fairly clearly what that means, these days.

If they don't, and want to know, then I use Amazon as the example to explain it to them (which is only a small proportion of my income, really, but has the advantage that absolutely everyone's already heard of it and can immediately understand the principle).

I've yet to meet anyone who wasn't doing Aff Marketing themselves who knew what the term meant or had any clue.

I also use Amazon as an example.

Most people I've explained the concept too were amazed and some even shocked that such a thing existed.

That's great, yes,i also find challenging to tell people what i do since they always find me seated in front of my computer.
They think that i am idling and some believe that i am a computer addict who is just wasting time.
I normally tell them I make money Online...definitely they don't believe on that

I recently seen a video of Frank Kern saying he tells people he is a salesman. That is basically what we are and what everyone understands. An online salesperson is most likely the best response for immediate results.

Or you can always say -

"If I told you I'd have to kill you"

    Or

"Don't worry your pretty little head" (anyone know where this saying came from?)

LOL when I tell my buddies I make money online they instantly seem to have more respect for me. All of them stay at home and play video games all day so I don't blame them. Then they want to learn how I do it and I explain to them until they realize it actually takes work and most quit haha.

I normally say when Im asked: 'I make money by promoting products online'.

Yeath, it seems not easy to explain clearly what we do. I will just say: promote business online. If they don't understand, switch to another topic.

I feel your pain, trying to explain it to anyone who's not particularly internet savvy is hard but explaining it to my parents was hilarious!

I normally just say internet marketer and hope they don't ask anymore questions, if they do I say I run a blog, create my own online products and sell them.

Most people still look confused though!
