Is Language learning a good niche to go into?

Hi guys

Okay, so I've had a few months off, with work and uni and bla bla bla.

I REALLY want to do it this time, I've got money, I've got time, and I'm paying someone to make a little niche site for me.

BUT, I have no idea what niche to go into and I need to know FAST.
I've heard people say, go into what your pationate in, and I love spanish, I taught myself it, but people say its a very competitive niche and I will see next to no results.

Can one of you guys please just name a niche for a beginner that I can go check out to see what I can do with it, because at the moment I really have no experience in finding a niche.

    This is going to sound really unhelpful, and I don't mean it that way at all!

    Learning languages, like every other niche anyone's ever heard of and many that people haven't, is an excellent niche for some people and a terrible one for others.

    Whether it goes well for you depends on you, your skills, your interests, your knowledge, your abilities, your traffic-generating plans, your interactive skills with your subscribers and visitors, your website and ... well, you get the message: it depends on "your" everything, and not so much on the niche itself. It's like anything: some people will be very successful with it while others screw up big time.

    This is simply "the way it is".

    If you have passion for it, that's likely to help.

      So, do you think if I really give this ago, and do my research on the most effective ways on converting this sort of niche, competition wont be such a factor - basically, I'll be able to see a result ?

      Because I know that I have no experience, but I honestly can't see why I can't. obviously I'll need to get subs etc etc. but I think I could convert these once I have them.

    • Besides your passion for Spanish, what other skills do you possess? And what are you going to be outsourcing?

      Spanish language learning is a highly competitive niche - yes. But you need to know what your unique angle is going to be - what bait you will use to draw interested customers to you.

      If you don't have much time to develop this, though - then you can look for excellent affiliate programmes in this niche and promote those (if you're interested in affiliate marketing).

  • We could name niches for you until the cows come home on their own, but I honestly don't think that would help you. It does help to identify something you really like, have a lot of knowledge about and enjoy doing.

    Otherwise it will become more of a chore for you and as that happens, the more likely you are to put in little effort.

    As Lexy said, so many things depend on you.

    That being said, if you truly want to go that route, you need to think of an angle that isn't already out there in that niche. Maybe something along the lines of I taught myself to speak Spanish, and you can too, giving daily lesson plans in the manner in which you taught yourself with maybe the angle that people don't need to spend the big bucks on learning a new language.

    That was just off the top of my head and I haven't a clue if it would be successful or not, lol! It was just a thought.

  • With Spanish, I'd definitely go affiliate at first. Just remember that you want to collect those email addresses before your send them on their way (looks like you're planning on that).

    Like some others have said, try to find your unique selling proposition. A good trick for this is to write a bunch of headlines (like a sales letter) with a promised benefit (e.g. learn Sp. in 3 mins a day). When you find the right headline that appeals to your USP, you'll "feel" it. That will be the USP you build your own brand around.

    Will everyone bite on your USP? Probably not, but those who do will be the ones who you resonate with--the ones who will trust your brand and follow your lead (as long as you keep trust).

    Another hint: check keywords as you're writing your headlines...the closer your USP hits with a certain keyword or phrase, the better your organic traffic (potential) will be.
  • Don't go into what you're passionate in. Go into your strengths. In this case, Spanish is your strength, so it's an exception. :p

    The problem here is you want to do it "fast". If you're going into a competitive niche, there isn't a way to go in "fast". Unless of course... You seize a partnership with someone in there who has a fairly influential market share.

    See if you can find any bloggers/vendors in that niche, and try and contact them. That'll be the fastest way in my opinion.

    The slow way? Slowly carve out your niche by specializing. Then expand your market share the traditional way.
  • It is a very tough niche to enter, speaking from experience. You definitely need to have a solid marketing plan in place. Even the best product will not give you a good ROI without a plan. And even a lousy one will get you big bucks if there is a marketing plan in place. I don't know your Spanish qualifications background, but take Rosetta Stone for instance. Most American people think of Spanish and say "Rosetta Stone". They are by far the leaders. Is that the best product? No way! Methodologically speaking, it is as lousy as it can get. But they are #1 when it comes to marketing, thus, the best selling program. Passion is key, but only one side of the coin, IMHO. Best of luck!
  • Normally the more competitive a niche is the more profitable it is. Don't be afraid of the competition.

    • Like the idea of pursuing your passion and think in the long run that will pay dividends because you will enjoy and like your work. Most people don't pursue their passions for the sake of higher paying jobs or jobs that garner more prestige. Once they have these positions, they find out that they do not like it and it wasn't up to their expectations (i.e. lawyer, doctor, investment banker.).

      If you like teaching Spanish, then you could think about what segment of the market you want to teach it to: children, middle school students, high school students, adults. Research these specific areas to find out what the competition is like in each. Then the segment with the lowest competition, may be the best to enter. You will be pursuing your passion of teaching Spanish and finding the best potential niche for you to have a successful business.

      Also, go to Small Business Administration website and find the local chapter in your area. They have free resources and personnel that will meet with you to help you achieve your business goals.
  • Yes, in my opinion this could be a great niche. It will depend on how you deliver your message and sell your product or service. Obviously there are buyers out there who are interested in niche. Heck, I am considering to buy Rosetta Stone to learn French and Japanese myself!

    • You will learn a few phrases with Rosetta Stone, but beyond that, don't expect to communicate much. It is flawed from every angle. Amazing marketing though.

  • I've already done that. I'm a native Spanish speaker myself so I have a good advantage. While you CAN make a lot of money from this market, the truth is that unless you have a good USP you won't make a lot. There are people already doing everything you can imagine such as free YouTube videos, websites, apps, etc... so you really have to come up with something unique to get anywhere.

  • A hot tip I got from a big time marketer. Learning languages and self-help niches are red hot right now! So many affiliate products, so many opportunities, so many potential buyers! Go get 'em tiger!
  • Language learning is a good niche but it's pretty competitive. You'd better have some good fresh ideas.

    Also many language learners don't have any money - my Mandarin teacher got us to make our own Hanzi flashcards and would never have dreamed of buying a set.
  • My background is in Applied Linguistics and taught language for 15 years. I say go for it if you have a hook and a passion.

    Why don't you focus on a subset of Spanish learners rather than a whole? For example, people wanting to emigrate to Spain and parts of S. America? Target them (this is just off the top of my head).

    I always wanted to do something like this of for English, but then the learners would not be bale to understand my emails/ blog etc LOL
  • Honestly, I think the "Language" market is already saturated especially with free tutorials on youtube and competitors like Rosetta Stone. You have to offer something really unique in order for people to notice.
  • I think teachable niches, are great especially if you are passionate about it. People are willing to pay a lot of money to learn such skills. I don't think its that competitive in the sense, that people will go with who they like. It all depends on your teaching style, and the way you will approach your students. It can become very lucrative with private coaching. All the best.

  • I think it's very doable if you're willing to create a personal brand that people trust. Sounds cliche but these people drive good traffic to affiliate language products rather than a 1-off pitch or paid ad to drop $99 on software, right here, right now. It's a medium to long term game & requires you to actually know/be learning the language for anyone to listen.
