Changed from Hostgator to Crocweb

I just migrated all of my sites from Hostgator to Crocweb, and so far everything is running smooth.

Hostgator was causing me problems with too much downtime. Also, they shut my main money site down TWICE because they complained it was using up too many resources (server load issues).

It's a simple wordpress site with 23 plugins, getting 2,000 hits a day. I went through all of their tips on how to optimize my site, even installed wordpress super cache, and they still weren't happy.

I had enough the second time round, and decided to ditch Hostgator.

In their defense, Hostgator always had great technical support. Their live chat was awesome.

I've already unfortunately had one bad experience with CrocWeb's live chat. I asked a question about how to check that the nameservers had been transferred over to CrocWeb, and the guy told me... "please contact technical support, this is live chat"...

What the hell? I thought live chat was all about the support? So next time I'll contact live chat just to have a chat, I'll open up the window and say "Yo, what's up dude, how's your day going? Man, you wouldn't believe what happened to me the other day..."

Anyway, Hostgator never did that to me, but what's really important is that they DON'T KEEP SHUTTING DOWN MY MAIN MONEY SITE! That's all I care about.

Only been a day on CrocWeb, but you're welcome to ask me how it's going later down the line.

At the end of the day you are still running on shared hosting which means you are sharing one server with hundreds of others, especially on host gator.

23 plugins take a lot of resources and they are certainly not optimized.

WP super cache is only good for the overall speed experience of your users and not for the server load.

I always recommend anyone that really takes his/her business serious to go for a VPS or Dedicated Server.

A managed VPS will provide you with much more room to grow and you won't "get kicked off" for something like that.

The chat box on Crocweb you are referring to is actual named "sales chat", which means it's not for support. Purely a marketing/conversion booster to get more clients, and not to provide support.

Honestly mate, don't save cash on the "ground" your business is build on. Good speeds, uptime is more important than ever.

For around $50 per month you can get a great managed VPS and you won't have to deal with 100s of others on that same server.

Hostgator has been annoying a lot of people lately - particularly since they 'migrated' most of the shared accounts to the new (garbage) servers. As I understand it, this was all part tied to their buyout and the new owners consolidating accounts onto these new really large servers that simply aren't performing as well as the older units they replaced.

During the day, database management/requests seem to be the real problem. A site that loaded in less than 3 seconds at night might take as long as 13-14 seconds during the middle of the day.

Which brings me to something said above that wasn't at all correct...

Also - WP super cache will reduce server load. When a page is requested the server will provide the cached HTML of the page without having to make calls to the database each time it is requested - which is what happens when the dynamic page is served.

Fewer database requests = reduced server demand each time a page is served.

Good post and information. I've always liked HostGator but have definitely been thinking of splitting my sites up between different hosting companies so I don't have all my eggs in one basket.

My two cents on the dedicated server advice would be to definitely go that route with your proven money sites for the reasons vMartin states. If you are just stating out or for sites you are testing to validate niche profitability I think the shared route is a good way to go in order to keep your expenses low.

If you make $1200+ a month then get your self a dedi box from reputable host like Softlayer , pay $29 a month for the server management and you'll be all set. Shared hosts are for starters only or small opt in sites, etc

    Hi

I have tried hostgator before but their hosting is really bad experience because when I try to make changes to my site it takes hours to take effect and I decided to change into much better hosting.

That's weird my friend cause I 've sent them an email and they fixed the uptime response and also helped me pay differently (I was in a pretty difficult situation and got broke but stood on my feet again) and they made the changes so i could keep my server online.

I guess you got unlucky I am not sure, but I am happy it worked well for you
    Cheers!

Now that this thread has been bumped, I'll ask how Crocweb is almost 1 1/2 years later?

Very true Glen.. Comparing shared servers seems to be pretty difficult. They all have problems. Dedicated is the way to go for sure. The only problems I've ever had on hostgator were related to a reseller account, which is still shared.

Upgrading your server is one of the first things you should do, as long as you're making money.

Sometimes LIVE support does not have any technical know how.

So it does look like you have to email CrocWeb's tech support.
