Where to begin as a marketer?

So I've been using affiliate marketing methods to help my clients in my website design business for years but am thinking about doing some actual affiliate marketing now.

Its an entirely different ball of wax and way more complex than some simple local marketing. So first off, my hat's off to you online marketers.

Secondly, and the reason for the post, what would you suggest for dipping my toe in the water to see if affiliate marketing is something I'm capable of doing? I know back linking, article writing, and how to create tiered sites with the linking to go with them.

I guess what I don't know though is how to choose a product and how to make sure its got low enough competition to make it worth it for a newbie. I'm not looking to get a detailed breakdown since I know those are probably closely guarded secrets but maybe pointed in the right direction and then I'll do the research.

    Write quality articles.
    Submit to high quality sites.
    Design a landing page.
    Try to get the contact details of visitors in their first visit but do not annoy the visitors.
    Do link building.
    Involve your social network.
    Increase your social network to more sites and more groups.

    Do this much first and then let us know.

    You can do it as a host - look at how talk shows leverage experts, and the whole talk show increases in viewer value. (eg. Oprah Winfrey, etc)

    The main thing is that you need to have a site for the hosting. Of course, being a host is all about networking and then marketing. You'll need to build trust in this model. However, if you merely want to matchmake, then just send the traffic to a similar looking landing page (if the vendor allows it). I personally only offer HQ products because it's much more profitable in the long-run.

    I wouldn't suggest organic traffic unless you can outsource it - it's far too much work. You might want to look into paid ads - space ads, text ads, video ads on Youtube/etc, PPC, PPM, etc.

    Hey JIC,

    Keywords.

    Not from an SEO standpoint, but from a market research point of view.

    It'll tell you...

    - What people are looking for
    - What words they are using, which will give you insight into how they are thinking
    - What sites they are going to
    - What the market looks like and what's being sold

    This is something I still have to do, it's sooo boring in my opinion. In the military it's called reconnaissance, and it's essential to the success of the mission.

    The first thing I'd say is to really do your Research!

    No good going into a Niche where there is little to promote and few people to promote to - hence NO Buyers and No Money to be made!

    Go into a big Market - as I very recently read somewhere online: -

    "Magic Markets = Sex, Money, Fitness!"

    Find your Niche in one of those Markets - not too small or obscure! (You need to find a Niche where people are wiling to spend)

    Find Keywords - people searching for solutions in that market - at least 3 to 5K searches a month - if not a bit more!

    Find products to promote, add good content - don't overdo the affiliate links - it Defeats the object if your visitors are blasted with Links from all directions.

    And the rest I suspect you already know - Build your Site - Start getting Free traffic, use good content and improve your Site as you go along and develop your system.

    Start building relationships with marketers. Look for ways you can support them in their marketing efforts. Offer to be an intern. Learn from them before you go dabbling. When you dabble you have tiny pieces of success which encourages you to go try something else to see if that works too. Before you know it, you've blown a lot of money and time.

    I would pick 1 or 2 traffic methods you enjoy doing ( maybe article marketing) and master on how to drive traffic to your website.

    As far as your website is concern, that is totally up to you -- but whatever you do ALWAYS build an email list.

    With that in mind, if you want to just focus on email list building, then build a squeeze page. If you enjoy writing, then I would start a blog.

    After you have your website up and running -- it is simply a matter of providing useful information to your customers -- while promoting products that can help them.

    First congrats for a nice idea!
    second,i would suggest you invest quite some time learning...maybe hiring a coach?
    This will help a great deal in ensuring that you do it right from the start rather than going through it alone and end up doing it wrong...it will be a waste of time.
