Website to earn money as a writer?

Hello! New member here. I was just wondering if you guys know of any good websites that I could use in order to make some money? I have signed up for ODesk but I am having trouble getting a job that pays somewhat decently. I am from Ireland so I think that makes things a bit more difficult as many sites only want American writers.

You could also check out iwriter although I think most of those writing sites have lots of writers so making money through writing will be hard unless you get a great name.

Why not try online marketing and use your writing skills to create articles and copy for products you are trying to sell.

    Hi Avril,

The one that matters is your own website. (Even if it's only a 1-page/2-page blog which you can make in an hour or two). Without one, you can probably only ever find "the lowest of the low" in terms of paid writing jobs, and with the maximum possible competition and difficulty, wherever and however you find them.

You have to "look professional" and "have samples on display" because nearly all your competitors do.

What matters, here, is to understand the available markets and decide in which one(s) you want to compete.

This post may help you, I think: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post8243387

The list needs some refining, but it does provide many sites you could look into.

      Hey Avril,

I've been to Ireland myself! (LOVE that place.) I think you should use your Irish background as a positive in the North American marketplace. Before I began writing books, I wrote freelance articles for a variety of magazines -- and honestly, I think the fact that you're from Ireland is only a plus.

Now, coming up with actual websites that hire writers can be tricky. Instead of all the usual suspects, I always suggest to new writers that you strike out and query sites you'd LIKE to write for. A great query, with a catchy article idea can make you stand out.

Hope this helps. Feel free to PM if you'd like some more tips.
      Take care,
      Christina

You should consider Hubpages, eHow, and other freelance sites. Also consider starting your own site offering your services - so that you don't have to compete in a "low price" war with other article writers on the freelance sites.

Try textbroker.co.uk. Unlike elance and some of the other sites mentioned you don't have to compete for work. Their rates are not wonderful, 6 euros for 500 words for a four star writer, but they are reliable.

The 2 easiest places to start getting jobs at will be iWriter and Fiverr in my opinion. You can of course try some of the traditional freelance sites, but orders generally come in slower on them from my experience.

Hi there! This is my first post, but I'll definitely do my best to help you out as much as possible. To begin, my name is David Gonzalez and I am a freelance writer based out of South Korea. I've been writing on Elance for close to 2 years now and make, on average, about $1,200 per month.

    oDesk vs. Elance

I've tried both websites and they're both really good. In my personal opinion, Elance has a far smoother interface and is perfect if you are trying to acquire a lot of jobs. I'm not sure about oDesk, but Elance is currently offering about 40 connects (used to bid on jobs) for a free membership (used to be 15).

For $10, you can get 60 connects, which is a lot considering the amount you're paying for them. Last time I checked, oDesk gave me kind of a headache when I tried to bid on dozens of jobs.

    Getting Your First Job

I must have placed in 100+ bids before acquiring my first job on Elance. It was only a $5 but was extremely important as it provided me with positive feedback (which allowed me to acquire future work). Once you acquire one job, gaining others will be much easier. Make sure that you are filling out a complete profile, getting verified, and verifying credentials.

    Make $10 a Day EASY

If you can write 1,000 words per day then you can easily earn $10 daily on Elance. The standard rate for writing on the site is $1 per 100 words. I personally write about 2,000 words per hour so it's very easy to make a lot of money working part time.

At the moment, there are 3 or 4 very larger clients on Elance that offer full time work (between 2,000 and 5,000 words daily). You can email me if you want their links. I don't write for them as I enjoy my freedom but you can certainly earn between $1000 and $2000 per month with them. And they hire newer writers all of the time.

    Automated Proposals

As far as automated proposals are concerned, I see no reason not to use them. You'll save a lot of time and personal experience and research has shown me that you can acquire a lot of jobs using them. For example, in my particular case, I get hired about 9% of the time. Meaning, for ever 10 bids I post, I get hired once (approximately).

So if I want 10 jobs per month then I know that I should bid on at least 100 jobs. While it may sound daunting, creating an automated proposal and bidding on jobs will make it far easier, and you'll acquire more jobs than you think.

Feel free to write me should you have any more questions about Elance or getting hired. Thanks for reading and have a nice day!

I'm from neither the US/UK/Canada, but I haven't found it *that* hard to get jobs because of my nationality.

That being said, please get away from bid sites like Odesk, Elance, Fivver etc.

Take your time, create a website, and build a business.

Then YOU can dictate the money that you charge.

Here is my personal formula, in a few easy steps

    1. Set up your own writer's website
    2. Market - It could be FREE marketing such as forum marketing, comment marketing, or paid marketing through Google etc
    3. Offer guest posts on your favorite topics/niches - this will allow you to get your name out, as well as link backs to your writers site
    4. Look for DECENT paying jobs - there are a few sites like ProBlogger job board or freelancewritinggigs where you can find jobs that pay 5 cents per word and up.
    5. Cold calling/emailing - Contact websites who you think you could improve, and explain why
    6. Relationship marketing - Establish relationships with other freelance writers, ask about overflow, etc.

If you have experience with stocks and investing and can write well in English, I can pay you money to write articles. Our average writer earned $64 this month per article they wrote but our articles average 600 words and they must be quality, well thought out articles on investing/stocks. We pay $7.50 per 1000 views your article gets and publish articles in Yahoo! Finance, MSN Money, and SeekingAlpha through our partners. PM me if you're interested.

Another vote for your own website.

It isn't difficult to create a portfolio at all. If you love writing, I'm sure you must have some pieces you've created and you can put those up to showcase your skill and creativity.

If you don't, then think about the things you really enjoy in life and write about those to add to your portfolio.

If you plan on offering rewrites as well as creating new content, then you could do a search for free PLR and rewrite a few of those, and show the before and after to further demonstrate your writing talent.

Odesk is one of the best websites you can go to but if you don’t find it great, there’s Fivver, Elance and iWriters that you can check out for opportunities to earn money. There are freelance sites that you can consider as well such as eHow and Hubpages.

I don’t think it matters which country you’re from because sites are more interested in the kind of work that you can deliver. Keep looking for money making opportunities using the sites mentioned above. Good luck.
