What's the purpose of "sending visitors"?

I've seen people sell packages where they "send visitors" to your websites (5,000 or so) that will show up in Google Analytics as real visitors to your website. I presume these are bots all over the world that will "visit" your website.

What's the purpose of this? How does that help you? Does Google care how many people visit your site? Can it hurt to do it?

    Well the #1 objective is to get those visitors to buy something or subscribe. I don't really see any benefit in sending bots to a page. Maybe to increase Alexa rank?

      The purpose of online marketing is to make money.

      If you're not sending real people to a site, they aren't going to buy anything.

    If you are selling something, then you need to send traffic to your website.
    Remember, no traffic=no visitors=no sales. Simple logic.

      Let me clarify. Most likely we're not talking about real people who have an interest in the product. These are probably bots that "visit" your site.

      If Google cares about how many visitors you get then it's a worthwhile endeavor. It would be like creating backlinks. You don't do it because you hope the backlinks will generate good traffic to your site. You do it because Google likes it and it helps with your search results.

      So does Google care about how many visitors you have?

        These packages you are seeing most likely will not convert into any buyers. Most of the people who buy those packages are getting it to increase their alexa rank.

        The more visitors you have coming to your site the higher (really lower) alexa will rank you and google will most likely look at your site more seriously.

        Also black hatters will get these packages to dilute their adsense and CPA traffic so it looks like regular conversions to the network.
