I don't know what the "no security" comment meant - but I have used oDesk quite a bit with no issue.

As always, chat with the person first. Give them a few small tasks. Make sure they can perform. Then hire them "full time"

I would never just "give" someone money and hope for the best.

            Mostafa,

Remember, Using odesk is essentially hiring a contractor. So you just treat it as a business in the sense of doing the basic steps to look at whom you hiring.

Things like feedback , Their Portfolio, what qualifications they have, However various factors will need to be looked at more closely depending on the job. For example software development and so on.

So, from looking at the applicant and selecting the ones you fill meet your requirements, You should invite them to the interview process.

Their are even a set of questions odesk provide you, so should ideally make sure you ask all relevant questions and anything you wish to know about the contractor before starting and ideally - that they can do the specified job. You have the option and i would say strongly consider speaking with them via phone ( Skype also and is free) this is another great way to clarify the project or task. This last thing you want it - is the something that is not what you wanted. Information lost in translation along the way!

There maybe some scenario's where the contractor does not fulfill the spec's of the project. So you can refine the contract and create milestones. Also i like to set a fixed budget opposed to hourly rate. This also ensures - you are covered if things go pear shaped and the project is not completed as agreed. They are excellent contractors on odesk, but like anything there are always a few bad apples.

However, Just think of it like this, When you went for a job interview. From the job application to the job interview - the process. Just apply it in the same way.

            Hope this Help

No matter where you find them, you will have to research and test individual freelancers.

This is true. I've used oDesk and Elance previously and quickly learnt the above is critical.

This is so true. I am a contractor also and I have to admit hiring us can be a challenge. However, you can find online contractors (aside from odesk) Elance, freelancer.com, onlinejobs.ph (Filipino contractors).

I would say odesk. I have been a member of this site since 2006 as a blogger/writer and as a virtual assistant, have been fulfilling clients tasks on a regular basis. With regards to my efficiency and effectiveness, I was not able to hear negative comments from them. We at odesk are professionals and we meet deadlines as requested by our clients.

Elance offers an Escrow system so you'll always be protected should your writers not perform accordingly. Just make sure that you choose the "perfect" writer beforehand. Elance offers very detailed profiles with feedback so you'll always be able to see who you're dealing with before hiring them. Good luck!

I don't like Odesk because in some projects they never support.

I would say without question that Odesk.

Why? well simply because it is easier to sign up, and has a very simple to use and intuitive platform. So as a result, have a lot of freelancers among which you can filter the good ones and use.

I have been working on oDesk now for more than 5 years, and I have hired freelancers there now for more than 3 years. Whereas I did sign up on odesk and Elance at the same time, but ended up abandoning my Elance account just after a couple of months. But I will never abandone my oDesk account ever. Even now that i don't use it any more very often.

oDesk is better, but it is more important to know how to test the freelancers rather than choosing the right site for them.

Personally my experience has been great with freelancer.com. I've used the others but i prefer this by far..

Again it all depends how you filter through the rubbish freelancers ;-)

Try the Warriors for Hire section in this forum. You'll get better quality people (usually) but still do your homework before paying them anything.

I've found that elance has been a good resource. Choosing the contractor is the difficult bit. Research them, ask for examples of work, ask them lost of questions. How is their English when they respond? What about grammar? Some outsourcing sites get outsources to take tests and you can sort the results accordngly.

I suggest trying out with different outsourcing sites like elance, and odesk.. I think the most important thing is to pick the best candidate and not the best site.

  • You could also try the placing an add in the Warriors for Hire section if you're looking for someone with references. Onlinejobs.ph and bestjobs.ph are also good places to look into

Most of the Freelance sites on the web can't simply help you when you need a complex, abstract project done in those domains. This is because those sites have no expertise or tools to support you about the pricing, deadlines or management of the project. However, they are good in tangible services like web development, logo development etc.
Statlance from tutorteddy helps you with projects needing abstract thinking...For example, statistical Analysis, finance, an accounting, or economics related project and even writing blogs.

First I highly recommend elance over odesk. With odesk you get a bazillion companies that auto respond to your job posting. At elance I think the quality if much higher. At odesk the price is usually much lower.

Here is the strategy that I have used and will work for you since you have multiple blogs. Post a job looking for someone for a trial run to post blog posts for 2 weeks. When you get proposals then hire 3-5 different proposals (based on your number of blogs). Give them different blogs to post to. Let them post for 2 weeks. Keep 1-2 that are the best. That allows you to find the best persons for the job. I recommend using 2 because if one flakes out then you are left with nobody posting. With 2 people then the other person can take over for the one that flakes out.
