Solo Ad Providers: Is the new Gmail update affecting you at all?

Hi warriors,

Okay, so I realized that this topic has been discussed in threads before (I've found them with the search feature); however, I'd like insight on this specific aspect of it.

Most of us already know about and have experienced the new tabs update that Gmail has done recently.

As a gmail user, I personally don't care for it and have disabled the feature.

I also don't care for it because I've seen my email open rates drop pretty significantly, as I'm sure others have as well.

Since this update has hit us email marketers specifically, I can't help but think that solo ad providers have taken the hardest hit.

Am I wrong?

If you're a solo ad provider, I'm curious to hear how this new Gmail update has affected your promotional email open rates.

I enjoy paid advertising and solo ads have increasingly become my #1 choice for paid traffic; however, I'm wondering if it's still worth it.

I mean, I'm sure there's still worth to it, but I'm wondering if it will still be as effective with this new Gmail update.

Also, I'd love any suggestions/advice on possible alternatives to email marketing.

I don't think I'll ever completely 86 email marketing; however, I do think it's wise, especially with this update, to slowly start making moves towards alternative communication methods.

I've never been a huge fan of social media like Facebook and Twitter, but it's looking like that may be the only other feasible communication portal in terms of relationship building, promotions and sales next to email marketing.

How have you all been adapting?

Thanks in advance for your kind input, insight and advice.

Ti

    Hi,

If you know how to build relationships with your subscribers they will
gladly look for your emails in the promo tabs section anyway.

I know my stats haven't really changed at all at the moment of typing
    anyway.

If you can get your subscribers on your side from the very start and
not just send the same old junk out to them like a lot of marketers
    do...

...You'll be well on your way to being able to stand way above the
    promo crazed email crowd.

    All the best
    Gavin

I imagine most of them are taking a big hit. Every day that passes, online marketing grows increasingly more complex especially if we're hesitant to adapt.

I know I don't like the feature, but maybe the prospects signed up to a bunch of solo ad lists are enjoying it because there's less clutter, at least at first glance.

As Gavin says, relationship building for purchasers of solo-ads will increasingly be more and more important. As for traditional solo ad sellers, clearly few do so.

I actually INCREASED MY OPEN RATE. I am still trying to figure out how.... Everything else is the same: same headline writing style, same informative ad style, etc etc.

I can't see any difference in open rates at all. After segmenting and checking the @gmail ones in specific, there is no remarkable difference to notice. Will monitor it further, but until today, nothing changed.

Dont really see a great relationship being built on the back of selling solo ads unless the seller was just sending a solo ad or two out each week mixed with quality infomation inbetween ..but thats just not how solo ad sellers make the big bucks is it? they send out 2 promotions per day the guys with a big list

I haven't noticed a big difference, sure you have good days and you have bad days but over all I cant see much of a difference in my open rates.. The trick is to keep your list FRESH..

Not much of a difference but email open rates are generally dropping across board compared to a year or two ago.

Keep in mind the fact that Google gives users the option to switch back to the old layout.

I've disabled this feature also, but before I did, I admit to not reading much of what was in the promotions tab. Admittedly, it is incredibly hypocritical of me considering that I hope my mailing list will take a look at the message that I just distributed to them on yesterday.

Now I have 3 tabs to click, but I honestly think I miss less of the emails I want to see.
