Looking to start fresh

Hi everyone,

I had a few small ventured with IM in the last few years, but nothing successful. I had tried AdSense sites, Amazon sites and other affiliate programs without much to show.

I would like to give it one last shot and give it my best this time. Are there any suggestions as to which direction I should take this? I know the basic "make a product and sell it" model, but I'm not quite there yet and would need more details as to what exactly needs to be done. I also don't expect to be completely spoon-fed, so just pointing me in the right direction would be great.

Some of my skills include technical writing, programming, web development, etc.

Thanks and hope to hear some constructive criticism and/or opinions,
V. Romanov

you have the technical writing and programming which is great, what you need to do now is to work on your SEO and marketing skill and you see yourself reaping in dollars.

Im going to assum you are broke. Why not start website after doing some research, and vow to build 3 quality links a day, and add a quality article every day for 30 days.

When you have done that, you can add your adsense on it and hopefully start seeing a few clicks here and there. Tats all you need to motivate yourself! Seeing those starting monies come it will make you post 2 quality articles a day for the next month and then build a tiered link campaign!

All the time your ad sense money should be increasing so you should keep half, and put te other half into buying NICE links and articles.

Then you repeat until you make $100 a day and start a new site.

What direction do you want to take? Where do you want to be in one year, two years, three years? If you don't know, what would it be if you did know?

Do you want to make a product and sell it? Do you want to stick with adsense? Do you want to be an affiliate? What do you want? There's too many options to give you a cookie cutter answer.

As Marc said you should decide what type of business model that interests you and then include that in your post. If you are short on money you should consider hiring your services out on this forum or in places like Odesk or Elance. There is usually a good demand for programming or web design and you can make some extra money to put into the business you choose to go into.

I think offering a service like web design or writing is a great starting point. You can get upfront payment and learn a bit about marketing while expanding your business. You can work on the freelance websites when you are starting out to get some experience.

  • Vlad,

I think Marc highlights the most important thing here. Yes you can get up to speed on marketing tactics and learn SEO and web marketing and how to build a brand online and all that good stuff but those things are tools, they are not the end game.

I think the best tip you will receive right now is to find something you like to do. If that happens to be writing or web development or one of the skills you already have then so be it. Obviously I don’t know you or your situation but I would venture a guess that you were not successful before because you weren’t that into what you were doing. That is also the reason a lot of people fail (even if they have lots of opportunity and resources at their disposal).

A very wise person that I know once said “do what you love and the money will follow”.

Of course is also helps to have a plan, do some research on a target market that you can sell to, and work hard at everything once you are up and running.

    Hope that helps,

    Shawn

    • I absolutely think you should play to your strengths right now. You know programming and know web design. There's two obvious things that spring to mind:
      1. Build WordPress plugins
      2. Start building websites for cash

If it was me, I'd start building websites and get money flowing first. WP plugins can be a great money spinner but you have to find a market first with a need not already filled (or filled badly). I think only experience with building websites and using lots and lots of plugins will you be able to analyse the plugin market.

Around a year ago I started building websites seriously for cash and it's the best thing I ever did. I can barely keep up with the work and I'm now outsourcing a lot of it. Check my signature for a guide I put together on how I operate the web business.

It doesn't matter where you want to be. It doesn't matter where you've been or what you've done. You know you've hit the wall. There's nothing wrong with moving on, just never give up.

You've probably heard that to be successful you need desire, belief and you need to take action.

Here's the first step: Find a niche that you can own. I'm not talking about a general niche. I'm talking digging down to the deepest part of a given topic and extracting something out of it.

For example: Coaching (That's a topic) Then there's a Football Coach (That's a niche) Then there's a Quarterback (That's a sub niche) Then there's the shoes the Quarterback wears (That's a sub sub niche) Then there's the shoe laces in the shoes the quarterback wears (That's a sub sub sub niche).

    You get the point.

That's where you have to start. Later work your way up the niche.

First the sub sub sub niche. Then get your technology in place (all of it) before you do anything else and do it right. Put your domain name on a Premium DNS Account. Host your site on a server that will burn the retina out of your visitors eyes.

You get my point. Stop playing around and do it right. When you get people who are genuinely visiting your site sell them something they want related to your niche. It's easy, just take it step by step.

    What ever you do--own it!
