How are blogs making money?

How are some of these blogs out there with no affiliate or ads on them making money? I noticed they are fishing for traffic but for what purpose if you don't advertise your own products, or affiliates..? not even adspace either..

Depends what you are talking about. A lot of people just create blogs for fun with no intention of monetization. Others create blogs to monetize but give up before finishing them, leaving them to sit around for a year until the domain or hosting expires. Still others are actively trying to make money on their blogs but just can't get it to work for them.

A lot of people like to build there blogs up before monetizing it...

The more traffic your getting the more you can charge for ad adspace. If you can afford to wait for monetizing until the time is right, thats always a wise way to go...

My blog UIWT Letter doesn't have any advertising on it, besides a widget to hire me at elance.
However, soon I will be allowing ads in my uiwt reports.

This is a pretty steady traffic website and it's constantly updating..they have to be making money somehow for the amount of time they use to research and anchor texts and what not.

Blogs make money if they go viral (or are syndicated) and have something on them to sell. Traffic = sales.

I just noticed at the very bottom it's got links to some other sites advertised, way bottom right side.

but the 428x60 up top, where's that exactly, doesn't seem to show up for me

A blog having no ad space means the author is not blogging for money but just needs an outlet for his creative ideas. But most blogger I know uses a blog as a platform to divert traffic to their money site.Aside from these, they use it as a source of backlink to their money site.

Checklist: 5 ways to monetize your blog for big bucks

    1. Sell your own products and services: Whether you are a product creator or an electrician, you can sell your own stuff on your blog. All you have to do is write optimized blog post that bring in traffic from the search engines and point readers to your products and services. You can also get traffic from paid traffic sources as well.

    2. Sell other peoples products or services: Also known as affiliate marketing. As an affiliate you can sell all kinds of digital products by using clickbank.com, warrior special offers, paydot.com and a host of other networks. CPA’s offers for physical products and even amazon.com

    3. Become an ad publisher: contextual ads are not as hot as they used to be mainly because it takes a lot more patience than testing and tracking in order to make good money. Not to mention lots of traffic from multiple sources.

    4. Sell advertising space: If you have a blog hosted on your own domain why not use your virtual real estate and rent advertising space on your blog. Most advertisers already have banners for promotion ready and rearing to go. All you have to do is come up with pricing for certain “hot spots” such as above the header, below the header, side bars, content areas, and footers. There is a small down side to this method… if you don’t’ have a lot of traffic coming into your blog you might not have advertisers willing to pay for space.

    5. Use pop up advertising: pop up advertising is still effective and just as annoying. You can do a JV with another blogger advertising their product or service. You can also use the pop up for cpa, offers and a host of other things as well.

Well there you have it 5 ways to monetize your blog for big bucks.

I started my blog purely to have fun, to have interesting conversations with people and to learn to write and think better. I never meant to make money from it.

But through it, I've had people approach me with all sorts of offers- I've written wedding speeches, written blog articles for a career consultation business, and ultimately got employed because my founder found me through my blog. It's a pretty great deal.

So my blog functions as a kind of distributed resume- it draws people to me, and they give me offers that I then get to pick and choose from. It's awesome.

Yeah, some people create blogs for the fun of it but many times they run out steam, run of things to write.

If you are not in a massive market (keywords not too competitive) you can drive meaningfull trafic to your site just by bloging and posting on social sites. I use LinkedIn + blogposts to a) get trafic and b) shape the debate ever so sligtly. If you have a relevant education, this is one way of making it count.

Most monetization techniques are quite obvious. If they haven't monetized their blog then chances are they're blogging for fun. Either that or they're building up their following to increase the value of their blog.

I just set up a personal blog that documents the progress of my online projects. I'm not necessarily looking to make money from it but rather to gain an audience. So it all depends on what the owner is using it for

Some people like to blog as a fun activity, just to see if they can gain an audience. Then over time once they've became popular, they monetize their blog to see if they can make a nice income with it.

    What browser are you using?

If it's Firefox, go to tools>addons>extensions

Do you see adblockplus, Ghostery, or noscript etc?

Do you have another type of built-in ad-blocker turned on in your browser?

I think this might be the case...

The lesson is - much of the time, when it looks like someone is doing work for free and giving everything away, either it's a deliberate illusion created by that person, or they are giving something away but it's loss-leading bait, or you need to wipe your glasses/browser and take a closer look.

Bingo ! haha adblockplus it was. Ah these plugins like these would make it so much harder for us putting ads up and waiting for it to get clicked, since it's not even visible if have a plugin like this !

Some people do blog for fun though when their blog gets popular they start making some cash from it by allowing affiliates or ads
    But some are purposely commercial

Maybe the blogs that you are talking about weren't created for money. I don't think it's possible to earn anything without having adspace, so the creators either made the blogs for fun or the blogs aren't famous enough to have ads yet.

Are you using some kind of ad blocking software? That would explain why you can't see the ads - there are loads of ads on that blog.
