Whats up with your captcha code man!

Seriously, when you are using captcha code for your website, pls be sensible.

I guess you need to test out different codes provided by different companies.

Some are just annoying. I mean i get it, it is to filter out spam and robots, but if it reaches a point where it is so difficult even for humans to decipher then its ridiculous.

It may hurt your sales or conversions or retain rate.

What do you think?

People mostly use captchas for contact pages, so I don't think it hurts sales or conversion rates at all. If you don't use them on your contact page, some clown with use it to spam you.

I never seen a captcha next to a buy button

      hahahah yea. i know.

But some services, not sales page.
Some big companies like paypal or moneybookers for example.
Where somewhere in the process there are captcha codes.

So if a web builder like weebly or wix allow free account but an upgrade later on, they will lose clients like that, because each time i need to sign in, i have trouble, then i wont want to use their services. If you get what i mean. haha

So it can hamper logins, thus may affect retain rate, if i find it a hassle i might change provider. Or sales affected because i dont want to upgrade. =)

      Makes sense?

It also keeps regular customers away.

      Give and take.
Some hurdles to keep spammers away but not so troublesome until it affects genuine customers.

Most people do realize that CAPTCHA are not about security at all, they're simply one of many ways to try and cut down (but not eliminate) automated form submissions.

CAPTCHA also harms usability. It takes time and effort for even a person of good eyesight to pass a CAPTCHA. It's a hassle and an annoyance.

But for me, I think I'll keep it.

I hate captchas Either they are easy or tough. They're just time and mind consumers.

  • I agree.

I use captchas in my signup page to avoid bot users, and I had to go through 3 different captcha providers until I found one that wasnt that difficult to fill in.

Good on you to think for your subscribers.

      Not everyone bothers.

Its like the debate on whether to make your videos in paid memberships downloadable and with water marks etc to prevent piracy.

But your main goal should be how to serve your customer well 1st den think about spam, not prevent spam 1st then think about customers.

I rather take spam with more customers anyday than no spam and less customers.

Some captchas are really irritating. You type them in, but you keep seeing a warning saying that the captcha is wrong. How many times will you try?

I believe that simple captchas are useful, but if they are too complicated, they can make someone give up.

Yeah, captchas can be a real pain in the butt. I hate entering them however I do see the reason for them. Almost a necessary "evil" in today's Internet...

What is the problem with just refreshing this captcha 2-3 times until it will be easy to rewrite? Although, recently some my friends from college who are into AI developed a software which is capable of recognizing captcha images with very high accuracy I suppose it will be useless in a few years.
Also, did you know that users typing captchas are "used" to write ebooks from scans?
Yes, sometimes when you have two words, one of them is difficult to retype and it is for verifiaction, and the second is just scan of the book, easy to write. When many people write the second word in the same form, the algorithm assumes that it is correct and adds it to the ebook. Quite clever way to rewrite whole books to digital versions, isn't it ? You can try to write this "easy" word wrong and usually your captcha will succeed as it is not for verification at all

Yup i hate spammers too, but i'll take more sales and with spammers anyday than less sales with no spammers.

But again it depends on the exact situation.

Yea man. Tell me about it.

Some sites i do until i gave up.
And it was like almost 20 tries till i gave up.
      Ridiculous.

As i said, sometimes its not a matter of 2-3 times, i think i can deal with that.
Is beyond that that makes it irritating.

But i didnt know about masking it as a ebook re-writer, haha quite smart actually.

Every captcha I've come across has that little refresh button next to it. So I just click that a few times until it's easily recognizable. Only takes a few extra seconds.
