Why do people JWplayer instead of Youtube?

Is there a COMPELLING REASON why some people use JWPlayer instead of just Youtube or Vimeo? In what situations would using JWPlayer make sense and in which situation would it make better sense to just use a free video hosting service.

I usually prefer JWPlayer because like to own my own stuff and do not need the social aspect of YouTube. It's more private that way. The only problem comes if the traffic is high.

That's true. Youtube tends to show competing videos' thumbnails once your video ends.

You can disable that when you get the embed code.

JWplayer is self-hosted and sometimes that is a real benefit.

JW is self hosted and Youtube is not. If you use a video player such as Youtube on your website then you risk leaking traffic back to that third party site which is not a good thing considering how much time and effort we spend getting people to our websites in the first place.

I will admit though I sometimes use Youtube videos on my sites and it's really just a convenience thing for me more than anything. It's much quicker to get a video up and running using Youtube than it is when self-hosting. So for me it really depends on the video and it's purpose. I'll use both self hosted and third party sites depending on the circumstances.

This is my position too. I do notice that some marketers use a script to make Youtube look more 'private.' Anyone have any ideas regarding this.

YouTube is great but limited. Can you add your own logo or start image? Do Pre-roll and Out-roll videos? Re-direct to another page from a video overlay which you design and control? Specify precisely which devices use flash and which use html5 video? Connect the timeline to control events on the page such as displaying an optin form at a certain time?

Using a custom player gives you freedom, and with a well designed API allows you to do far more with your video, if desired.

If you host your video on a properly configured CDN (ie Amazon S3), "high traffic" will be no issue at all.

You can embed YT videos in any of the self-hosted "players" (ie JWPlayer, Flowplayer, etc). And you can configure the video to not show YT's logo, and not show "related" videos at the end, etc. Basically, you can customize the player to look and function pretty much however you want.

A lot of people don't realize it, but you actually can do most of that stuff with any YT video that's embedded on your site. All it takes is a little jQuery.

I can find most "hidden" video file URL's in 2 seconds using Firebug. And anyone who doesn't know how to do that can use any screen capture software to record the video as it's playing back. Bottom line... there's no such thing as a video that can't be "ripped".

No way. For some of it, yes, but pre roll and post roll, no chance. And events triggered from the timeline with your own custom popup content? The ability to redirect under events of closing a popup video or stopping a video? I think not. Clicking on the video stage and running any script or redirect? And of course you imply knowledge of jQuery instead of a wizard plus cut and paste code. There are many other features I could list, like silent start until visitor decides he actually wants to hear it any many more.

Have you ever seen YouTube's API? It's pretty darn extensive. Check out this page, particularly the sections about 'playback status' and setting up 'event listeners'. Provided you know basic Javascript / jQuery, it's a piece of cake to trigger any event on your webpage (like showing or hiding a div, or redirecting to another page, etc), based on the playback status or timeline of an embedded YT video.

And when you combine that with the API of a good player (my favorite is jPlayer), there's really not much you can't do.

  • I always host my own videos in Amazon S3 and play them with JW player. Why would I want to allow *my* traffic click away from *my* page at the end of the video?

most of my videos same thing, host in amazon s3 and play with jwplayer. for a few ones I do youtube as well, with the ?rel=0 tag to avoid competitor thumbnails at end of video

Can't rip them on the page being displayed but at least with jwplayer, you view source, find where the file sits, type that in your browser, then it usually opens in Quicktime.. upgrade to QuickTime Pro and download it!

Some great advice, thanks to everyone, I will check out JWPlayer..Vimeo I know has several levels you can pay for which controls the size and storage capacity depending on what you buy....

JW Player is self-hosted and it appears more professional compared to YouTube. The good thing about this option is that you don’t have to worry about getting your videos removed. Also, you have full control over your own server while there’s no way you can control YouTube.

I’m hoping you get the difference between the two.

YouTube is a service, JwPlayer is a self hosted system - if you get what I mean.

The chances are with YouTube there will be Google ads all over your videos which you don't even receive any revenue for.

Personally I use a combination of YouTube and LeadPlayer.

This allows me to host the videos with YouTube while adding calls to action at any point to increase video conversion.

You can also embed an opt in form within the video that appears at a specific time.

I tend to pop it up after explaining 'what you will learn' at the start of a video but give users the option to skip and carry on watching without opting in.

It looks more professional to have a self-hosted video. You also have full control over it and you never risk having it removed.

Those are pretty compelling reasons but what's the risk of video removal with YT if you stick with the rules?

Even videos that comply with YouTube's "Community Guidelines" are at risk of removal at YouTube's whim.

I have had videos removed for absolutely no reason (that I could find, anyway).

I learned my lesson one day when I had done a product review and embedded the video on my blog and then sent out a broadcast to my list linking back to my blog post. I sent the broadcast out about an hour after I finished the blog post and when I clicked the link in my broadcast I came to find out that my video had already been taken down.

I guess maybe I was breaking the rules if you consider the fact that the video was made basically for commercial use, but that doesn't ease the pain of wasting all that traffic on top of looking like an ass to my subscribers when they see "this video was taken down because it violated YouTube's community guidelines."

I know that saying other people have loads of review videos up just like mine and YT leaves them alone is no excuse, but it still bothers me to think that I have no control over my videos once I upload them to YT. I suppose I could make my videos "unlisted" since I'm not really concerned about getting traffic from YT in most cases, but I'm not really sure doing that would stop them from possibly getting removed, either.

I learned early on that no matter what, when it comes to my own unique content that I worked really hard on creating, I need to have full control and full ownership and not leave myself at the mercy of any other websites.

I find this fascinating. No one ever think of hosting their site in an online mall...I couldn't understand why people think it is OK to give ALL their video traffic to YT.
Based on the above...WHY has the DOT TV extension not taken off ? In the visual world we live in I would think DOT TV would be as valuable a DOT COM

Most people who do put videos into YouTube are doing so in hopes of accessing YouTube's traffic -- people they would never have gotten to go to their websites otherwise.

Very interesting thread. I see my thoughts re owning my videos are reflected in a lot of posts here. I use EVS and before EVP2 and yes, there are costs involved, but business is business and any purchase becomes part of the cost of sales...

I too use YouTube where needed but not so much.

As has been mentioned above, opening a door to your visitor clicking through to 3rd party sites is not going to help your business.

YouTube etc for traffic and self hosted for the site...

Great responses here and wouldn't have known about possibilities to change YouTubes coding through jquery and such. Not that I would know how, but I guess one could google that or find a video on it... On YouTube...

    Gotta love this forum

Youtube can remove your videos at whim. Which has happened often with certain political videos. Censorship is a good reason to self-host.
