Do you get open rates of 30% or more from your list?

I was just curious as to how many people here are getting good open rates. If you do, are you willing to share a secret or two as to how you do it?

To get above average open rates, you need to be using
above average list building and e-mail marketing strategies.

I segment my lists religiously so that I increase the relevance
of my messages and boost open rates, click throughs and
    sales.

The key is knowing the needs of your subscribers really well
and then matching what you say and offer to suit.

If you want people to pay attention to you specifically, then
you need to have a unique voice, message and materials that
    they can't get easily elsewhere.

Don't just come out telling them what they already know and
repeating the same ol', same ol' that they've heard a zillion
    times before.

By the way, don't get too hung up on open rates as not all
opens are created equal. A metric to really focus on is your
    end sales from an e-mailing.

Thanks for the feedback Shaun. Much appreciated. I like the thought about end sales from a mailing, but how to you really measure that if 60 - 80% of your mailings are not selling anything, but rather building the relationship (so that you're more likely to make sales when you do promote something)?

For example, what percentage of your mailings actually contain a paid offer?

That is a classic mistake that many list builders make:
giving away tons of great information for free to
        supposedly 'build the relationship.'

(Yes, I've made that mistake many times in the past too).

Rather than having 60-80% of your mailings NOT selling
anything, consider flipping that around to where 80%+
are selling something (not hard selling though, but rather
        consultative selling).

You can build a relationship and sell at the same time.

In fact, if you sell products that really benefit your
subscriber, then you can build a mutually-beneficial
relationship that lasts by selling them what they need
        when they need it.

Yes - more: from all my lists. I'd be absolutely horrified to have as many as 70% of the targeted subscribers I spend so much of my working life finding not even willing to open an email from me!

    This. Exactly. Completely.

(And everything else Shaun just said above, of course.)
