I have hired a logo designer off elance.com

Shas has sent me her initial draws, 7 in all. I have my favourites, but I wonder which ones you guys would choose.

Bear in mind that all these can be changes, part of the job in unlimited revisions.

Which would you go for?

I have attached 5 of them, I couldn't do all 7.

    NONE.

All of the 'logo' samples are too complex for a logo
that would work in multiple media.

The initial logo ideas tell me that the 'designer' is a
relative amateur as they're trying to do too much in
the logo instead of focusing on one key aspect of
    your brand.

Look at any of the logos of the top companies and
you'll find one thing: SIMPLICITY, not complexity.

      Exactly as Shaun said.

On top of that, what you want to focus on is simplicity, if it's a brand you're going for. It has to be repeatable and unique in the person's mind.

Nope. I don't think there is any point using that designer any further if those are the 5 variations he/she came up with.

I really don't like any of them. They just look tacky and not professional.

My best advice would be to find a new designer and make sure you have a good look at their portfolio of previous designs before you commit.

I looked at her portfolio, compared it to others and she was the one that I thought was best.

She has some really nice designs in her portfolio, but looks like she has stuggled here.

Any more tips on #4 though? its seems to be the best of a bad bunch.

Your logo is very important so you shouldn't just be picking the best of a bad bunch.

The reality is I can go to a stock site right now and find you 20+ logos that look 100 times better than those ones:

          World | GraphicRiver

I wouldn't go with any of them or even try getting them fixed.

But again, that's just my opinion.

    Yeah, I prefer 1 and 4.

Not much of a fan of the others though.

I am not sure how much of a pro i'd expect for the money I am paying the designer. $70 is what it's costing.

And she was the best out of the proposals I had IMO.

I'll see if she'll do more though.

Shaun will undoubtedly be right about this.

(Possibly a much-simplified version of number 4, with less going on in it, might be preferable to any of the others above?).

Definitely no.4 with a more modern look and typography. I always shrink the logo to the smallest size you expect it to appear and check to ensure that the name and key design elements are is clear and obvious. If you satisfy this test then you are halfway there in terms of achieving simplicity.

Simple shapes, etc... work well. Logo really is for branding more than anything else. You just want people to eventually, automatically associate your business, with that image.

Right now they are thinking(your designer), that they want to try and get the point across, of what your business is about in the logo. That isn't the job of the logo really.

      Mrnace:

I'm surprised that no one has asked about your business.

Isn't the main reason for a logo to put across some sort of message?

So what is your message? Personal "likes" and "dislikes" of logo design are fairly subjective.

What do you want the logo to say or elicit from those who see it?

Isn't that the criteria on which to judge how "good" a logo is?

      Just my thoughts,

Yeah, I'll see what happens over night with the designer.

If she come up with something new and better then great, if not, I am sure we can revise waht she has done, she has given me unlimited edits/revisions for the image I choose, so could techniquely pick one and totally revamp it.

I think the fourth is definately servicable and it stands as the best in my eyes.

All that needs to be done is an alignment adjustment of the bottom line so that the "s" is flush with the stem of the "d" above and the shadowing removed from the globe.

The custom glyphs are a nice touch above the "a" and the "e".

If you wanted to play on the footprint idea, it's probably best that 2 are used at most since many aren't legible.

Logos are tough. The company founder wants something cool. The designer wants something cool (BTW, there is no cool in any of those logos).

    But...The customer couldn't give a s@@t about your logo.

Let me put it another way: A crap logo will repel potential customers. A fantastic logo is customer neutral...it won't drive them away immediately.

No one will do business with you just because you have a cool logo.

But, again, those logos up top are maybe just a bit too literal. The one with the footprints is outright painful.

Constructive feedback...maybe a big pair of flip-flops incorporated somehow into a strong text-based logo? Sunglasses? Passport? Elements that speak more to travel and fun.

    What's there In the name?

But its more than important in business. A logo decides the intention of your business or website. It says it all. Some are funny some are professional some are just simple. A complex logo has something saying that its too mixed up for you to find. that means on our website we give away information which you may find difficult to understand. It may seem crazy but I've experienced it. the admin decides the design of the logo and he himself creates the site so the possibilities of website behavior depends on the logo.

    Good luck!

Honestly I do Like Both, but its the simplicity, When you look at a logo you look for the brand recognition kinda like you can look at the red and blue logo of bank of America and automatically know. Think long term, think about where you want to go with the site/business and if you want to do any kind of offline promoting, and printing like t-shirts or hats or anything like that.

What I don't like is the size Difference between the logo and the words, but that can be changed. Just an opinion of mine, but whichever you choose make sure, YOU like it

    Best of luck with it!

Edit: Out of the 2 that are NOT uploaded, Do you like either of those of the 2 that did?

I'm not really a fan of any of them. They look like Fiverr designs. I agree with what Will said.

My advice would be to choose a designer that knows about branding and design instead of going the cheap route. This is of course assuming that the logo is for a legitimate company. If not, then I would probably go with one of the logos others have created. The one egyptik posted is better than all the ones your designer made. But I would recommend starting from scratch with a new designer.

I totally agree with Shaun about the logos. Simplicity definitely rules when it comes to design. But it's getting really hard for good designers to make a living as a lot of people are using Fiverr and even on Elance there are a lot of people doing cheap looking logos for next to nothing. I must admit, I'm finding it very hard to make a living these days.

Shaun and WillR are correct as usual. They all appear amateur and will adversely affect conversions. Asking for a redesign won't help because the designer's creative "box" is too small.

This is why I recommend Logo Design, Web Design and More. | 99designs for serious business owners. It's more expensive, but you get submissions from multiple designers and the quality is superb.

I always hate to slate someone else's work, especially as she has probably worked hard to produce these (too much work in many cases), but as others have said, they don't look professional at all.

Typography is very important these days and I'm not feeling any of the selections. There are far too many shadows and gradients going on for a logo.

I would probably pay up and then launch a contest on 99designs. Fair enough, you'll be out of pocket, but at least you'll get something decent at the end of the day.

  • I personally think logos are over-rated. More often than not you could put just anything and it will work once people get used to it. For example: Facebook (an "f" within a blue square)... errr really?

I personally never worry about fancy logos for any of my site. I just put the name of the site in some fancy color/font and presto. Never had a problem monetizing the site with or without logo.

I like the second one. Well, that is just me. Choice is up to you. Please check to make sure on one is using it now. I have seen many blue/green logos that look very similar, but not the same. Try to make your logo distinctive and unique. Oh yes, that will truly serve your company.

    Nice work James!

I've seen you in a few publications.

Iheart logos and a few others I believe?

Thank you but I cant take all the credit. Most of the work is my partner Aleks previous work. All the new projects are a combination of our minds together. We have similar styles and after I interviewed him for my blog, I thought it would be best for us to come together.

I'll go with number 4. It is simple and precise.
