I'm always intrigued by peoples stories in IM. They're an inspiration to many. I will start with mine.
A friend of mine was heavily into SEO IM for about 3 months. One day he said he made around $200 and showed me his account as proof. I was sold from that point on.
I caught up with him daily and from someone that knew nothing about SEO, website development, graphics etc I ended up making money after about 3 weeks in.
Although it was just $1.00 to $4.00 in Amazon everyday it was still an awesome feeling!
I stopped because work started to take over my life. I quit work at the end of last year and am FT dedicated to entrepreneurship this year.
I have managed to make an app, buy and sell cars, buy and sell things from ebay, make heaps of other websites, and learn so much it's unbelievable.
I started IM with SEO and have just recently moved to PPC. I'm knew to the whole thing but within a week of PPC I already have about 3 websites up and 4 campaigns. Still so much to learn in this industry, it may seem overwhelming but it gets so much easier in time.
