Sticky header vs Scroll to Top

I've a question regarding conversions on the sales page. what does, in your guys experience convert better. A sticky header with a purchase button (max 80px of height). Like the one seen on all envato market places or a purchase field floating to the right (with credit card icons and stuff) combined with a scroll to top button visible when moving down the fold.

I think you are referring to a tool bar at the top of a page that stays at the top while the user scrolls down the page?

It really depends on what you are selling and who you are selling to. The general rule that applies is to never give a potential customer the option to click away from the sale. Example would be a link to your social site. Once the customer clicks through to your social site you may lose the sale.

When selling a single product to a potential customer that has never bought from your site it is always best to focus the customer on the copy first and the buy button second. A tool bar is not necessary.

When selling multiple products and the objective is to give the customer lots of choices then a tool bar is helpful to the customer and does keep the customer on your site. More webmasters than not that test the tool bar say it increases sales and visitor retention.

  • I'm fond of sticky headers, specially if you toss a colorful "Sign Up" button on them. I use that setup in many of my sites.
