Mac VS PC Questions...

INTERNET MARKETING

This may be most appropriate for the off-topic thread, but it
is about having the most reliable equipment, to allow my business
to run the smoothest... without constant headaches

I've been a PC user for over 30 years now. I have 5 PC's in
my HOME, but I'm considering "going Mac."

I used Mac's in my military job from 1991 - 1995 and absolutely
LOVED them, but the biggest drawback back then was that relatively
little software was designed for them.

I think that has largely changed, but could be wrong.

So, I'd like your take on the topic.

If you have "gone Mac," what don't you like about it.

If you haven't gone Mac, why not?

One of the biggest reasons that I want to go Mac incidentally is
that I've not found a single PC laptop that didn't give me ton of
problems. I'm sure that part of the problem there was that, with
laptops, they try to cram so many components into such a tiny space,
that you are asking for trouble... and when I run 20 programs at
the same time... I complicate things

Also, if you buy the less expensive laptops, you are generally buying
the ones with cheaper components, which are probably more subject to
failure.

Anyway, please enlighten me.

Also, if you have a Mac setup with a jet diesel engine, feel free
to recommend that specific setup to me!

Hi,

I am a computer engineer and came from a windows background. Now I have a mac.
Both PC and MAC serves their purpose. The PC is considered the world standard and has lots of software. The Mac is used mostly for professionals who cant afford zero downtime, meaning no machine failures or crashing. The mac does not have virus issues like windows nor does it requires constant formatting like windows. If the mac user needs a windows software for his work he can always run windows on the mac through virtualization or by using bootcamp. I hope I have assisted you.

I never owned mac and the main reason is the price although it is not the only reason. It's true that there are a lot of viruses out there but if you are carful and have nice anti-virus software which you keep up to date you should be ok.
I also prefer PC because most software run only on PC (and for my free time, games as well). I have a new PC (2 months old) with windows 8 and it never crashed even once.

Willie,

I have both an iMac and an Air -- I love them both. I will never go back to a PC.

If software is a concern: I have BootCamp installed on both of my Macs. Reboot your system into Windows and you can run any software that you like. Additionally, if the software you are running is relatively "light," you can install Parallels and have no need to reboot your computer into Windows. In short, PC/Mac software compatibility is no longer an issue.

Macs have, in general, provided an overall better experience for me.

Willie,

I made this decision back in 1992...

I took an afternoon drive....

I visited 5 local computer stores and retailers.... Looked around at two things....

Price of hardware...
How much software was available...

The second was the killer.... The Mac section was tiny in comparison...

I ended up buying a PC.

Even now... When you look at software sold here, the bulk of it is built for Windows... Of course, some will run on emulators.... But, it is built for Windows....

Hi Willie!

Could you maybe share with us what kind of software you want to run, and what you want to use your computer for in general?

I've been a mac user for my entire life, and I always prefered using a mac over windows for most things. That said tough, for some things you are better off using a PC.

Since you said you are looking at the Macbook Pro Retina, and you do a lot of Video & Audio editting, I'd suggest to go with the 13-inch: 2.6GHz model or above (preferably either of the 15-inch).

If you are seriously into Video & Audio editting though, and don't mind having something less portable and spending some more money, than the Mac Pro is the best thing you can have.

If you need an option inbetween the two above, take a look at a high-end iMac.

The worst thing about a Mac is iTunes. It is way too restrictive. PC all the way. Just remember to look after your machine by using strong antivirus software and you wont have any issues.

If you are looking for performance make sure you use a good processor and RAM as well as a solid state hard drive - reliable brands are always a good starting point.

  Now this is a sore subject. I'm still running Windows XP on my main computer because other Windows OS have been utter crap. As in there are days I just want to throw them through the window. I have a mini graveyard of PC laptops.
  
  For a few years I've only bought Apple: Macbook, iPhone, iPad - and they have been excellent, solid products.
  
  I was recently looking at cheap Windows laptops, but now everything is loaded with the Windows 8 touchscreen bloatware. For a desktop computer I have massive monitors and for a primary computer I can't imagine having the monitor close enough where I need to keep poking it.
  
  PCs are great: until you load Windows and a few Microsoft programs, then all your memory is gone, a huge chunk of the hard drive is used up, and incompatibility issues arise.
  
  If money is tight then you need to go the PC route. Otherwise, look at what Microsoft has been doing lately: Windows based phones are terrible and now almost nonexistent in the market. The Surface was a disaster causing a $900M writeoff. Windows 8 has been ripped and not exactly led to new PC buys.

I have a MAC with two monitors in front of me and a PC to my right (where I use SEO and marketing software). So my answer is: both! I also use my PC to program in C++ and Java which is also possible in a MAC, but somewhat harder to do.

The only downside to macs is that they are so awesome that people love to steal them. I had one stolen a few months ago.

I worked for Microsoft, I have gone mac, have same laptop for 3 + years haven't reinstalled it one time it runs and it runs super fast. Even the windows on an emulator runs faster then on my windows laptop.

What would make it perfect is if i could detach the screen and make it a touchscreen tablet.

In anycase it's much better then windows and more productive. (I'm in IM to)
