myname.com - do I also need .net and .info?

I'm setting up a personal site/blog on (myname).com and am wondering if it is also a good idea to grab any of the other corresponding domains - .net, .info, etc or is this a waste of money?

    Hy there,

I also use this as a strategy for picking up domain names, but I have never bought all of the extensions. I think you do not need them until you will use them.

If you are going to stick with that site for awhile, and you're afraid people might try and copy it on similar domains then by all means, go for it.

I don't think you need them, at all: the real reason (if any) for registering them is simply to make sure that nobody else does.

.com is the KING. Once you hold your brand name on Google, nobody else can touch you!

          Who says that?

No matter how established you are with .com, still other extensions can leave you behind.

Some of the established .com brands have been left behind by .net, .org in many cases.

Like someone else said, I have the .net and .org for one of my main sites, which is NOT based on my personal name. I couldn't believe this domain was free when I bought the .com domain, and I wanted to keep the theme to myself.

For all my other domains, I haven't bothered. I can't see the need to.

If you want to, there's no harm in doing so. And the thing is that when you buy the .com, you can usually get the others at a discounted price. OR, purchasing the others can bump up your order value so that you get a 30 or 40% discount off the lot. So you get something free in effect.

Whatever you do, I don't think it's worth stressing over

            Hope that helps ...

Thanks for the feedback folks. I understand why I would want to buy matching domain names and I do in most cases. But I'm thinking that since this is a personal domain name like bobjones.com used as a hub for my online activities and blog that the .net, .info etc would be less important and unlikely anyone would want to duplicate my site or content. It's not like I'm famous or anything. :-)

I only own the .net and .org for one of my primary domains.

And, outside those two, I don't own non-dotcom domains.

I doubt you really need all. You'll spend a fortune if you try to get all other extensions. There're TONS of them. Go for the .com. If you REALLY want, grab the .net and .org. I'll ignore the rest.
