Do Traffic Exchanges Actually Work?

I recently starting using some traffic exchanges such as traffic adbar and traffic swarm to get some new people to my website. It does slightly increase the traffic to my site, but not one of them have converted to a sale. I figured most people are only going to my site to earn credits so they can keep showing their site to others. So my question is are traffic exchanges even worth my time? Thanks for any advice!

They can work very well if you're using them for well incentivized list-building, intending later to promote something specifically targeted at traffic-exchange users.

Otherwise - obviously enough - they're not going to work at all, because targeting is everything.

The world (and internet marketing forums) are full of people who imagine, mistakenly, that "they're crap traffic", and "they're not targeted". Those are generally people who have tried selling to TE users without list-building first, and/or have tried selling something not specifically targeted at TE users.

That's why the majority of people, in the majority of threads here on this subject, tend to express the view that they're "no good"/"untargeted"/"hopeless", and so on, while others are quietly making large 4-figure or even 5-figure monthly incomes by using them (and no: I'm not talking just about their owners!).

These threads are among the many recent ones which illustrate the point ...

Thank you for the advice Alexa. I am a little confused about what your mean though. When you say they work if your using them for list building do you mean having an opt-in page to collect their information? Also how would you know what to promote to traffic exchange users when they consist of so many different types of people?

Yes - that's what their owners, and the people who use them successfully, all seem to say (have a read through the threads like the ones I've linked to above, and see for yourself).

They're different types of people who all have one thing in common: they're webmasters who want to attract traffic to their websites so they can make more money from internet marketing. Those are the traffic demographics. Don't try to use that traffic to promote something that isn't specifically targeted at webmasters who want to attract traffic to their websites so they can make more money from internet marketing! It's true that you might find the very occasional customer by selling oranges in a fish-market, but that still doesn't make it a sensible place to rent a stall, if you're in the fruit business.

(But later, the thread will fill up with responses saying "waste of time" and "untargeted" - watch and see! ).

Thank you for explaining that to me, I understand what you mean now. I don't think what I am promoting on the traffic exchanges right now is going to convert very well because it sounds like it needs to be something such as a system to generate traffic to websites to get the people interested.

I think she has siad it all, And it would just be a waste of time and resources saying the same thing over and over again, since it won'y change anything or do any good.

But I will say just one word:

Beware of people using hitbots to vacuum traffic from such systems. Hitbots are fairly common scripts. Relics of the old top list days.

In my opinion traffic exchanges are an extreme waist of time. They send junk traffic, people just looking to get credits and no one caring to optin anyone elses offer, as you mentioned.

My advice to find another traffic source. In my experience, if you've been doing a traffic method for a while and you've not generated results. It's time to move on.

The best kind of traffic is referral traffic from people you've built relationships with. Spend some time connecting with people here on WF. And then see if you can set up adswaps or rocket deals. That traffic will most certainly convert much better.

From my experience most of the time they do not work. They don't deliver any quality, targeted traffic that converts.

I have used traffic exchanges very effectively for
generating leads for my MLM business over the years.

Use a squeeze page, have an optin box, give something
for free away. Once they optin then the work begins.

Don't just try to sell them, market to them. Help them out.

I think old fashioned exchanged with people who are in the same or similar niche work best. Then you are getting targeted traffic. Obviously, this does not have to be a direct competitor. But if you are both similar maybe they are giving info and you are selling a product or they are selling a similar product that would compliment yours, then you could help each other out and give each other credibility.

Certain traffic exchanges can be vey effective. There are some very good ones out there, as well as some that are worthless. The key is to test your offer on different exchanges. Also notice the type of ads that are being run on the exchange you have selected, and taylor your ads to those viewers. You may also want to see the demographics of your exchanges by plugging them into Quantcast.com. Good luck.

Not all of them are a waste of time though.
