Can you create your own luck?

Most motivational speakers and successful people always say if you take massive action and you can create your own luck.

But let me give you an example that it is not always the truth.

There is a guy called James. He was struggling to pay his bills and provide for his family.

He came on the internet looking for ways to earn additional income. He stumbled upon a MMO course on product creation. He decided to purchase it.

Within 2 months of implementing the things he learned in the course, he created his first product.

During that time, he also put in effort to connect and network with potential affiliates in his niche. Most affiliates agreed to promote his product on launch day.

Then, came launch day itself, he couldn't connect to the internet because their was problem with his internet service provider.

His web hosting company was also having maintenance on the same day without notifying James beforehand.

Just when James was trying to fix the internet, his son came down with a high fever and he had to fetch him to the hospital.

He couldn't informed his JV/affiliates about the problems.

A week later, when James had everything solved, he discovered that he had not make any sales and he also found many of his affiliates were upset with sending broken link to their subscribers, resulting in complaints and unsubscribes.

So now, James has no more money to invest in his online business and had ruined his reputation in the industry.

Do think that you can create your luck by taking action?

What will you do if you were in James situation?

This is a mildly unlucky story but in the big picture
barely even a brush stroke on the canvas.

      Persistence will overcome luck eventually.

Yes you can have bad luck and I can assure you that
the successful marketers here and elsewhere have all
had their fair share of bad luck.

But if you keep taking action over time you also have
      some good luck.

If you're serious there's always a way through any
      problem or setback you have.

You just need to keep doing what it takes and eventually
      you'll see positive results.

      Kindest regards,
      Andrew Cavanagh

Life is all about 'REPS'. When I was a teenager I read a ton of Muscle & Fitness magazines on a coach to Yugoslavia. When I got back from that holiday I started training with weights (something I still do to this day). I applied what I learned in Bodybuilding to other areas of my life... and it all comes down to reps.

Luck is a fickle mistress and it all comes down to the mindset with which you view it. You see, some people have a negative attitude towards luck and that becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. When something goes wrong, they say, "Just my luck" or "Knowing my luck, 'x' will happen'. The guy walking around with more rose-tinted glasses will find a $20 bill on the floor and say, "Just my luck" (see the difference? Same words - different attitude towards it). With the right attitude, passion and a market for what you're selling, the harder you work, the luckier you will get. Period.

When one of my sons was a toddler, he was one of the grumpiest little kids you could ever meet (he's the complete opposite now), and would walk round sulking all the time with his head down and his thumb in his mouth. Since he was constantly staring at the floor, he was forever finding dropped money. There are rare circumstances where the miseries seem to profit the most

I'm surprised that it took James a week to contact his JV partner. There are public libraries and other places where he could have accessed the internet within that time, and it's unlikely in this day and age that he knows no-one else with internet access who could have been persuaded - perhaps during a phone call from the hospital - to rattle off a quick explanatory e-mail to the partner.

James had a bad day (a really bad day!), but he doesn't seem the type to think laterally and so rather than being 'unlucky', perhaps he's just not suited to business and the obstacles it can throw in front of you. Not everyone is cut out for it.

James deserves to be where he's at now. James is all about James. When James puts customers first, James will succeed. Until then James will always be a looser in business.

Two remedies that cost nothing to implement:

    1. Build a community in a niche where problems are solved
    2. Upsell stuff to that community

PS: Tell James to get off his butt and get going or he'll drown in his own sorrow and if he's relying on "luck", wish him luck and forget him.

  • Most "lucky" individuals who end up becoming successful will be able to tell you a "James" story or two.
Many marketers actually use these stories on their sales pages in order to sell their current product.
Once successful, you will be able to find the "not so lucky day" stories in their book. Bad days are part of the reality for most people who are on their way to creating their own "luck".

Yes I believe that you make your own luck.

James unfortunately had a rubbish day but it happens every now and then, just pick yourself up and keep on going!

I'm sure he could build his reputation back up and probably even write an eBook about it and make some $$$

I recommend reading Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers.

Luck comes from being in the right place at the right time, and you'll discover that there are a number of contributing factors. Things like the year you were born, the opportunities others gave you, and most importantly what you did with those opportunities.

If you aren't ready for when the confluence of "good luck" strikes, you won't succeed.

As for "making your own luck", that is the result of persistence, getting knowledge, applying it and learning from mistakes, and increasing your network.

You can't be serious. No more money? Did the banks finally run out? He has had a minor setback. Making your own luck means you stay with it (or shift to something else when necessary) until you get success.

As for ruining his reputation in the industry... No way. The public's memory lasts about a minute and a half on a good day. Besides, no one cares because they're busy doing their own thing. People go bankrupt and it's soon forgotten.

Tell your friend to find a way to get some capital and try again. I'd also suggest that product creation isn't the first thing a new marketer should try, even if they really have something of value to offer (many don't).

This, success means sticking with things and NOT quitting when the going gets tough. It means pushing through and persisting despite the lack of confidence or faith.

That is, by and large, correct most of the time

But let me give you an example that it is not always the truth.
I've never heard anyone say that people are lucky ALL THE TIME.

Even the most successful businessmen constantly fail.

They also constantly succeed (aka "get lucky")

My girlfriend yesterday told me how "lucky" I am to always be winning contests.

I told her that it has nothing to do with luck, but that I work at winning and do it often.

Of course I don't win all the time. And it's ludicrous to try to twist a mentality like that to allege that motivational speakers tell people that they can get lucky ALL the time

I think there are different kinds of luck, and things that people mistake for luck that is not luck.

I think that finding money on the street or winning the lottery are random occurrences that might or might not happen and can be considered being lucky or having luck.

Then there are the things that people mistake as luck or being lucky and that is when you want something and take action to get it.

This is where skill and hard work come together to produce a result.

Alot of people who don't see you work hard, or see the effort you have put into achieving a result might see that an call you lucky but they are mistaken.

Sure you might not always get the results the first time, but then you adjust and continue applying your skills, or learning new skills and keep working hard.

In your example Janes has just learned some amazing lessons. Lessons that he could choose to take advantage of and probably make more money than he thought possible.

But because he is focused on external circumstances and deciding to play the victim to a concept called "luck" then he is not going to go anywhere

Let me tell james a quick story of a man who was bankrupted and poor for more years than Ive been on this earth.
He struggled for most of his life, fell back in what vague and nearly nonexistent pursuits he had, and pretty much was waaay behind his generation.
He didnt find success until his mid 40's. Almost half a century of nothingness.
Anyway, to make a long story short, this man called Zig Ziglar died last year as one of the most influential, loved and successful men to walk this earth.

James wants to talk about not being able to create his own luck? Sounds like james has a knack for giving up too easy.

Yes, you can create your own luck because if something negative happens to you, this is a consequence of your mistakes. Even things that don't seem to depend on your actions are caused by your mistakes, like the fever of James’ son.

You can learn how to stop making mistakes and avoid similar complications if you will look for the right information about this matter.

There are many different methods to cure or prevent a disease, which are not based on traditional medicine. This is why alternative medicine can cure incurable diseases.

They're not called 'incurable' diseases for nothing, and once there is a cure for them, alternative or conventional, then they're not called 'incurable' at all. It seems to me that whether or not the success or otherwise of their business ventures are down to their aptitude for that kind of thing, the James's of this world have enough to contend with without having to embark on a parental guilt trip as well.

Incurable diseases cannot be cured by traditional medicine, but they can be cured through alternative medicine. However, due to the lack of credibility by the ignorant public, many people don't trust holistic methods.

If alternative medicine was advertised like the law of attraction (which was not scientifically explained by anyone but widely accepted only because it was hugely advertised) everyone would prefer natural methods instead of having to face surgical operations, and take medications.

However, many famous doctors, pharmaceutical industries, and drugstores are combating alternative medicine with all their power because they simply want to eliminate the competition.

They don't care if it will be better for humanity if everyone will use alternative medicine to solve their problems instead of trusting their painful and expensive methods. They only want to keep selling their products and services.

There are ways to cure incurable diseases, and also ways to prevent physical diseases, mental illnesses, accidents, and other misfortunes, but they are ignored by many.

I honestly don't think you can create your own good luck. Good fortune is one of many definitions for luck.

One can have a good fortune today, but lose it all overnight or tomorrow by unforeseen circumstances like a market crash. Then, good fortune becomes misfortune, or good luck becomes bad luck as your friend James experienced in his set of circumstances.

I do believe however that you can create your own success by having tenacity or stick-to-it-ivity as my grandpa used to say. You need only to learn from your own experiences and find that silver lining that lies within every dark cloud.

So create your own luck? No, but create your own success? Absolutely!

Business is all about variables. The more complex and connected the business is the greater the % failure rate. Played right the % luck rate can also increase.

Traditional businesses would open at 9am and close at 5pm and only deal with a few customers. Each day would be the same. Slow and steady with few dramas. Generally low growth.

Today and on the internet, businesses are highly connected. There is no closing time, no chance where the businesses doors are closed and you can easily "mentally" stop and know each day you will have this period to simply STOP. An email, a request and issue can arise at any time and you need to be prepared for it.

Crap happens. I could fill this forum with stories of crap happening.

The secret is to create the STOP time each day for an hour or two at least. Pull yourself out of the business and issues buzzing around you. Clear the mind and asses your situation. What is your current situation? What situation do your want to be in? What are the key things you did well in the day? What are the key things that could have been done better? What issues are pending? How can you turn those issues around? The secret in all this is to be BRUTALLY honest with yourself no excuses. NO BS.

In the military this is called Situational Awareness. Or from Napoleans time and then in the British Military - Appreciation Method. Stop, appreciate the lay of the land, the factors bearing on your situation. What is the situation now? What is the desired situation? Appreciate all the factors - deduce how those factors arose and deduce how you can turn those factors to your advantage to get to your desired situation. Then plot possible paths of action. Even conflicting paths of action. Measure their possible outcomes even with just thought experiments. Develop a plan of action based on one or a mix of your possible paths. Over time with exercise you will get faster and faster at it.

THEN you Act. And you will act with confidence and determination. You will act act with confidence because you will have understood what is happening and what needs to happen. You will have tested the possibilities in your mind. You will have assessed the risks associated with your actions and be prepared for fall out from variables that may not work in your favor.

Many business people fail and fail all the time. History is littered with some of the most successful people getting screwed over regularly and then one day they break out and look like some overnight success. The reality is the failures build up their experience and without realizing it many of them develop a strong inherent situational awareness skill that just gets better and better with time.

Even if you do not work to build on your experience daily but simply go with the flow - simple persistence and time will build your situational awareness and reaction skills. Over time crap will still happen but you will be more adept at working it to your advantage. Not just overcoming it but turning it into gold.

Crap happened. I could will this forum with stories of crap happening. But... major advances were also made. I could fill this forum with all sorts of amazing lessons and tricks I have up my sleave. Like many others.

If all of that happens to you, the secret to success is to keep persisting. Giving up is how you fail. Quitting is how you fail.

By continuing to try and achieve success and take action and learn from your mistakes, you will EVENTUALLY end up creating your own luck.

The ONLY way to fail is by quitting and giving up.

Keep trying, keep persisting, and you will eventually strike luck and succeed.
