You can buy pictures on gettyimages.com

As far as free picture I don't know if you can find one. Generally people images are all paid becuase a model is required and models who do commercial stock photos have to be paid. They sign model releases. If you post a picture and you don't have a model release or you bought from someone who did not have a model release you can get in trouble

Have you tried the stock photo sites? Some are free, some charge.

Free Resellers Resources is a new free site that has some photos of men - I noticed a few guys with hardhats - didn't look through them all -

There aren't a lot of images there yet, but you mind find what you need.

    Just sign up.

That's what I found, too. I looked through a good number of images, but none were free. That doesn't mean there aren't any free ones. I just didn't see any. And yes, there is the issue of buying credits - so obviously there's a cost.

This service makes it way too easy for people to steal images for their own gain, whether it's for commercial use or to create a wall plaque - it's just easier to get caught in the former.

PS: Ah, I see Al added a clarification... so if he's used the service he probably has a good idea what's there. I'm not positive of what I'm talking about so... I'd listen to him.

Even on the free sites though, there is generally some kind of clause that says "you can't use pictures of people on anything that promotes anything else, unless they (the person in the picture) knows about it, and you reach an agreement/get their approval."

I found some awesome images I was going to use on my site... until I read the fine print.

That's all part of the game, HAdrian... no matter where you look for photos, you'll need to read the fine print. You will find photos that do not have restrictions - you just have to rifle through the galleries to find them. Only you can do that. You're unlikely to find a site that doesn't have some sort of use agreement and limitations clauses.

      PS: Great list, Quentin. Thanks.

You could also try Wikimedia Commons

    Wikimedia Commons

Worth checking the licensing restrictions (which are minimal) but should be free to use.

You have to pay for the premium ones - but if you login (free account) you can see all sorts of free stock photos that you can download.

At least - it was like that recently.

How about just taking a photo of your local "sparky" (or someone dressed up as one!!) - and you never need to worry about copyright / licensing!

    Just my thoughts . . . .

Don't kill yourself trying to find a suitable image for free, just buy a stock photo for a couple of dollars (literally) and you'll not only have the perfect shot you want, but you'll be safe from any copyright infringement suit that a growing number of rookie marketers are being subjected to.

Enforcement is getting more and more aggressive as technology gets better and better at detecting and identifying marketers using copyrighted images illegally.

One "oops" can cost you a grand or more... Most of the stock photo houses have now retained the services of a handful of companies that specialize in finding and hammering infringers.

    Best,

    Brian

Just checked - the images are free to use on a website. The only real restriction is that you cannot use a photo of any person if you are making money on the site. Other wise they're pretty straightforward.

In most cases, the standard licensing applies:

    You may use the Image
    • In digital format on websites, multimedia presentations, broadcast film and video, cell phones.
    • In printed promotional materials, magazines, newspapers, books, brochures, flyers, CD/DVD covers, etc.
    • Along with your corporate identity on business cards, letterhead, etc.
    • To decorate your home, your office or any public place.
You may not use the Image
    • For pornographic, unlawful or other immoral purposes, for spreading hate or discrimination, or to defame or victimise other people, sociteties, cultures.
    • To endorse products and services if it depicts a person.
    • In a way that can give a bad name to SXC or the person(s) depicted on the Image.
    • As part of a trademark, service mark or logo.
    • SELLING AND REDISTRIBUTION OF THE IMAGE (INDIVIDUALLY OR ALONG WITH OTHER IMAGES) IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN! DO NOT SHARE THE IMAGE WITH OTHERS!
Always ask permission from the photographer if you want to use the Image
    • In website templates that You intend to sell or distribute.
    • For creating printed reproductions that You intend to sell.
    • On "print on demand" items such as t-shirts, postcards, mouse pads, mugs (e.g. on sites like Cafepress), or on any similar mass produced item that would contain the Image in a dominant way.

Al - which images from which site are you referring to here? I'm getting confused - and it doesn't take much!
