Re: the site in my sig:

I have spent 3 months and a lot of blood sweat and tears on this site. I have between a 1000 and 3000 uniques a month (depending on what source).

I got to #1 on Google about 3 weeks ago.

However, not a dime in sales.

Anyone who has the time and can give me some suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

My site is Female Self Defense

    1. The site design isn't great. It looks a bit 1990's.

    2. The first page gives the impression of a very lean site. It looks like only half a page of information. It certainly doesn't look like a resource site someone might stick around browsing. I would get a much better blog style theme so your front page has excerpts from maybe your most recent 3-4 posts. This will also solve your design issue. Check out themeforest.net for a heap of professional and inexpensive Wordpress themes.

    3. You are not building a list at all. When I get to your site there should be some type of free and valuable offer asking for my email address. Even a really good sales page only converts at 2-5% which means the other 95%+ of your visitors are being wasted. So you must have some type of list building offer to capture those other people. This can be an exit pop so it only displays to those people about to leave your site.

    4. In your very top menu you have words such as 'Cart' and 'Checkout'. People are going to see this at first glance and just assume this is some type of ecommerce store and not an informational resource. You want to get rid of those links. When people arrive at this site they should feel like they are visiting a blog with lots of helpful resources for them to read... not an ecommerce store.

    5. You should turn the concentration of the site from selling to instead focusing on giving away free information. If the main focus is selling then people will never return and will never share your site. Make it a resource people want to return to and want to share with others. You do that by focusing on giving away more and more great and valuable free information. If you do that then naturally people will want to check out your paid stuff.

They are just a few things.

        Jeanne,

        You're welcome.

One last thing I forgot to mention was to add Google Analytics to the site (maybe you already have) and keep an eye on the types of keywords and websites people are typing in to get to your website. This will tell you a lot about your average visitor and the type of information they are looking for.

I gave this example in a different thread a few weeks ago. I was watching a doco on the Grand Canyon and they were talking about their website getting thousands of hits per day but they weren't converting into many bookings. They did a further investigation into things and found out the average visitor to their site was not actually someone looking to go to the Grand Canyon, but was instead school kids looking up information for their school projects.

So this is why knowing what your visitor is looking for and targeting the right kind of keywords is so important. Getting thousands of visitors and being #1 for a certain keyword is all great but if they are not people ultimately looking to buy solutions, then it doesn't matter how hard you try, you'll never make many sales.

Willr has a great point. I have a sales writing background so that is where my attention was focused, but the right side distracted me and Willr is right, there is no stickiness. May I also recommend self-defense tips is a section for those who register with your blog.

Change your picture to someone using one of your products to defend herself.

Hmmm, I looked again and you have self-defense articles. At the end of each article you might want to recommend a specific product to avoid or defend against that situation.

Not just facebook, etc.., but get the plugin to remind people to join your rss feed at the end of each post.

WillR covered most of it. I agree, I would go with another theme. A more pleasing template.

You might try a grid view on your home page.

As far as your products (and this is only a suggestion and my opinion) is to focus on downloads, be it video courses or ebook/kindles on martial arts.

I don't know about the throwing stars and knives. You have state and federal laws to consider.

I am not sure how it would fly with the police if one of your customers took out a guy ninja style because she was having a bad day

This is really good advice for the most part. Except for 4 and 5. I say it depends on the variations and longtails of the keywords shes receiving her searches from. If they include buying triggers, like "sign up for self defense program" or "female self defense pepper spray" then sell sell sell. I think fixing the first 3 things mentioned by WillR, right off the bat will start getting conversions. I would wait to change over the concept from sales to thinly veiled info site. My first thought when getting to the site was what the heck are they selling. Design was bad and it looked like it was some info only site that was outdated.

That being said I would like to offer some help. For converting your current visitors. I think your organic positioning on the keyword is providing you some real opportunity. Re-modelling the site should bring some sales almost immediately. I would recommend making a 1-1 copy of the site onto a test server and making all the changes there before going live to not disrupt your current visitors during construction and just make a changeover in an instant.

You should definitely be building an opt-in list and have a LARGE call to action above the fold, somehting like SIGN UP NOW for a FREE SELF DEFENSE GUIDE.

Now expanding to ...bringing more visitors, specifically more qualified visitors. I would start building links to individual product pages. To me it looks like all of your current links are coming from nofollow comment links on relevant articles. You could pick up a few (12-25) social bookmarks, a handful of wiki links, a couple of guest posts, and dofollow links on some of your actual product money terms, links anchored to words like "buy pepper spray online" and link them to the product pages for pepper spray.

Start re-targeting your visitors on Google ad network. Setup a re-targeting campaign with paid traffic on Google ad network and keep showing your banners over and over and over and over to the same people who came to your site already and didn't convert. They showed interest at one time by visiting. Now beat them over the head with well designed banner ad impressions until they buy something.

PM me if you need help with this project, wouldn't mind working on this one, as I think you have some good opportunity with this one.

I can tell from your site you're only interested in making money. I'd spend a while giving people some great info and building up trust.

And maybe concentrate on one or two products instead of a dozen. Your tagline mentions knowledge being the key to self-defense then you try to sell someone a ninja star.

I like your domain name and it's a great niche. I'm positive you can turn it into a business if you don't give up, even if it takes you a few years.

I beg to differ. The front page of the site is not trying to be an ecommerce store. Just take a second to read the blurb. The fact the site has a heap of informational blog posts also tells me they are not trying to be an ecommerce store. Therefore having the checkout links at the top really confuses visitors when they hit the page. It immediately changes the feeling from informational to salesy.

As someone mentioned above having those checkout links might be ok, IF you were trying to be an ecommerce store only. But that's certainly not the impression I got when hitting the site. So those links did confuse me and will likely be noticed by your visitors and potentially put them off before they even read any of your content.

I assumed you were trying to run an informational blog that provides valuable information to users and in the process is able to recommend useful courses and tools.

        I may be wrong though...

you are LOL'ing with 3 posts to your name. :p

        Will is right!

If you build an ecommerce and build a list as well, you will do very well.

Have a friend here with a Feng Shui site, one of the biggest in OZ, with a list of 100,000

He make 3000% more a month than his crappy 9-5 job he use to have. And with a list, he tells me, its like fishing in a small pool full of fish.

and he does so many things for his list, that they do not care where buttons are, they just want to buy he tells me, they do not care how his site is set out, cause they already trust him, or have heard of him, and his good service / products.

You are totally missing out on the most important points, and i had to bring them out for you, as you are most likely a newbie in the field.

its not in your site, its in the relationships you have with people and buying customers that will make you sales at the end of the day.

If you think I am wrong, why is it, that some of our ugliest sites, with stupid payment links, and NO BUTTONS make us the most profits.

        I rest my case.

You've gotten some great advice above.

Like WillR mentioned, ditch the cart/checkout buttons from the nav. They won't help you sell anything and already raise psychological flags that you're going to try and sell them something.

Not the best first impression to give your visitors.

You also need to do a better job of tapping into women's emotions. Connect with them. This is really important.

Ever been scared walking in a parking lot at night by yourself?

Not many women haven't experienced that at one point or another. Now that you've built that connection, slowly build on it and offer a solution.

Don't be scared. With pepper spray in your back pocket and nunchucks in your purse, no robber, con-man or rapist will be able to harm you.

I'm sure you could come up with something much better.

Also, I see you're linking to a page with hundreds of different items. Don't do that. It overwhelms the visitor and they have no idea what to do.

It'll be much more effective if you write articles about each product or a small group of products and explain why they have to buy them.

"5 Self Defense Gadgets Every Single Woman Needs"

Or something like that. Then go on to explain why they're so important. That's where I'd start.

Also think about your main target market.

What they need and want. Look on amazon for instance and see what type of products actually sells and how. The titles, descriptions, everything.

Also keyword research is very important. Via Keyword elite II I can se that it was not hard to rank number 2 for Female self defence.

Another self defence could be peace and harmony. I guess you are in the US not the far east.

      Glad you liked it.

I think you could get away with the outdated design and get sales just by doing that. Remember, marketing is about selling someone something.

They may not be in "buy mode" when they get to your site, so you have to push those buttons for them. As a marketer, it's your job to make them go "OMG, I totally need to buy this!"

And you don't get that reaction by just throwing up a page with products and praying they'll buy something. I wish it was that easy, though.

Also, here's another thing I noticed.

Your order page looks really scam-ish to me. There's no "secure" logos, no SSL, no credit card icons, nothing. You'd be surprised how much that stuff helps conversions.

I'd be afraid buying from your site just for the fear of getting my credit card number stolen. Look at a Clickbank order page and try to mimic it as much as possible. They split test different formats all the time, so they know what works.

That and you have a "Powered by Wordpress" thing at the footer. I said you could get away with the outdated design but after seeing that I'd say you definitely need an overhaul in that category. And if you're making sales directly on your site, you definitely need an SSL certificate.

Which brings me to my next point: How do you get paid for these products and what commissions do you earn? I ask because it may be easier for you to just link them to an Amazon product and not have to worry about processing the orders yourself.

I found one of your products on Amazon for roughly $400 cheaper as well. If someone decided to Google your product, I'm sure they'd go with the cheaper one Amazon instead.

Amazon.com: Being Safe At Home Survival Kit -...Amazon.com: Being Safe At Home Survival Kit -...

People already trust Amazon, so you may be making more sales by linking to them instead of selling directly on your site. Their commissions aren't that high (4% to 8.5% max) but you have the benefit of getting credited for products you aren't even promoting. I think you should consider doing that before putting a lot of $$$ into redesigning your entire site + order page.

I see. That would yield you more $$$ per sale, no doubt. Although it's significantly more work for you.

I'd personally go the Amazon route just because it's easier to manage and I don't have to run around buying and shipping items as orders come in.

Think about this: Can you handle scaling this business model? What would happen if 3000 orders came in next month? Could you handle that? What if 3% of the items ordered were out of stock at your supplier?

Those are some of the reasons I'd opt to go with Amazon. I just worry about traffic and watch the sales come in. And I'd also think you'd get a higher conversion rate with Amazon as opposed to using your own sales page.

Anyways, that's just my own opinion. Like I said before, your current method would get you a higher commission per sale. But it can lead to more problems and is less hands-off. Just some things to think about.

Just wanted to add a little informational resource on how different forms of traffic are converting. Email Is Crushing Twitter, Facebook for Selling Stuff Online | Wired Business | Wired.com You have the organic traffic already coming in. Email, and PPC are the other big two, get a list going immediately and try and find a few hundred bucks somewhere to get a PPC retargeting campaign going as soon as you overhaul that design. Sell something that you can re-buy later when you have more money, or just skip a few nights of partying or something. It will come back to you if you do it right.

Also I have a couple dozens themes I'll donate one to the cause if you're that hard up for the money to buy one from themeforest.net (~$45) PM me for a list of options. (don't everyone take this as an opportunity to beg me for free themes, bc it's not happening..)

This is a Woocommerce theme that a person with a design company set up for me. The sales are all thru Paypal as far as I know. Any items I sell, I buy from a supplier for less than my sales price.
Are you already holding inventory? If not I would strongly consider using affiliate products or buying wholesale inventory asap. If you buy it wholesale you should be able to reduce your prices and keep good enough margins to compete with Amazon. Then you can also list all of your products on ebay and amazon as well and start selling there too. The problem with not holding inventory and I can tell you first hand from an e-commerce site I run is people are impatient and you're at the mercy of your supplier. If an order comes in on Friday and your supplier doesn't work over the weekend you cant get your inventory shipped to you (to turn around) until monday. by the time it gets to you gets repackaged and turned around to your customer its been too long, a lot of customers will process paypal returns and chargebacks if they don't have a shipping tracking number in 48 hours. This is directly from personal experience and its a hassle trust me.

Could be. I didn't check to make sure they were identical.

Either way, I would at least try split testing. Try it for a while with Amazon links and then again with your own sales page. See which one performs better.

Site design looks kind of "Bland".

But Most people won't feel like "Reading".

The site has so many Links that it is itimidating.

The Copy is not compelling enough to encourage a Clickthrough to the products.

Never offer a Plethera of products, consumers can never decide which to buy so they usually buy NEITHER.

Offer a Free giveaway, capture their email, and send them emails promoting each offer little by little.

The email is the most important asset to build, it is more valuable than a 1-time $50 sale.

So on your page, Focus on getting the Email by giving away a Free REPORT or something.

Go to Fiver and get $5 graphic report created.

Then Follow up over time to make the sale.

As of now your site is set up in a "one-hit-wonder" kind of way.

you are not building a LIST.

this is just my personal opinion so take it with a GRAIN OF SALT if you must??

If you are online, and NOT building a list, or NOT building relationships and NOT LEVERAGING off other TOP players in your niche, its time to go out and get a 9-5 job.

Its simple math, but at the end of the day, if you are not doing these things above, you are wasting your time, and your expectations of doing well. So if you are not prepared to do these 3 things above.....its time to toss in the towel, and go apply for a flippin' burgers job.

    Hi Jeanne,
It sounds like you need to check out your competition to see what their sites look like. You need to start building a list. Giving away a valuable e book or a few lessons on self defense. People will become your subscribers, they will follow you and keep coming back to your blog. If you want to PM me, I'll give you the URL to my site. You will see tons of info on how to build a list, along with videos.
    Hope this helps!
