Does Your Partner Support Your Internet Dream?

How many of you have a wife/husband/significant other that actually supports and encourage you in your pursuit of an internet business? Mine does - even if it consists of a gentle pat on the head and a "That's nice darling, you go for it". Carving out your place in an online business is so much less challenging when you have support from your family and friends.

So does your family understand your passion for an internet lifestyle or are you still trying to win them over?

Fortunately I'm single (from a business point of view). I imagine how difficult it could be to convince a partner this business is legit - especially when you're starting out and don't have the income to show for it.

Everyone who has a partner that supports their efforts should think themselves very lucky.

I am still unmarried and staying with parents.

I am passionate about IM and I keep telling my brother about my ideas and money making online ways. He will often reply me sarcastically.

However, last year, I was successful in making some $$ for the first time and I gave him around $2k to spend for his needs.

Now he respects my time online..

Having a partner that positively supports your work is a vital part of anyone's success be it for IM or any other profession. I am also single but when that changes, I hope it will be a supportive one both ways.

He does now...but I had to earn quite a bit by "playing on the computer all day" before he made the switch.

Now he sees me in the living room and says, "Shouldn't you be writing?"

    ::rolls eyes::

    Gotta love supportive spouses, eh?

My story is similar to this. It was only after I sold 1 of my first websites for 500 bucks, did she start to believe it was possible to make money online. Then after I was making enough to pay the rent every month with my Adsense earnings (not using Adsense now, more Amazon and Clickbank these days) she became a true believer.

We had some pretty heated arguments along the way though.

      I love it.

  • "Internet Marketing" should not be some sort of a pursuit, or dream, or lifestyle that is equal to someday winning the lotto. (Possibly realistic, but mostly a fantasy).

If you are running a real business, then internet marketing simply becomes a part of marketing it. If this is not the case, then you are doing it wrong, and are what us Entrepreneurs call "Opportunity seeking".

It is wise to get out of that stage, and take a step back to really decide on setting up a passion business where the Internet is "Optinal", not "THE" business.

This way, it's also easier to explain to people what it is you are building.

My wife tolerates it but would prefer I give it up so we can remain poor and live from paycheck to paycheck. She's a good woman, and our marriage is solid, but with Internet marketing she just doesn't see it, and is stuck in the mindset of all the other drones who still believe that working for the man is what life is and what life shall always be.

This is great advice that every person needs to read and apply.

When you begin treating internet marketing like a business and NOT a hobby, you will begin to find more success and make a lot more money online.

Luckily, I am single and dating but when I do date all I can say is that I talk about my website all day and women looks at me like they understand but I know inside that I am speaking klingon to her lol...... Same goes for my friends as they are 9 to 5'ers and just want to go to after hour meetings and home as I am wired in to the internet almost 18 hours a day making sure my site is watered and growing.

I left my 'good job' a few years back to pursue my own business, and my boyfriend at the time (of 4 years) couldn't have been any less supportive if he tried. We split up in the end, and my choice of career was probably one of the main factors.

It's difficult to find someone who'll be supportive of this way of working, so you're very lucky if you've managed it!

I recently gave my girlfriend the boot, but we have remained friends. She was always supportive of my online endeavors and still is.

My entire immediate family is supportive of what I do, after doing it for 14 years they've gotten used to the notion. Though the funny thing is many of them still don't understand it.

Now if we get into SOME of my cousins, aunts, and uncles, and other extended famiy, it's a whole different story. One uncle is still convinced I'm into something shady, despite the fact that I've explained to him in very basic terms what I do.

I have a lot of social gatherings at my house and also have a lot of visitors that come and go, so I guess that has raised eyebrows with some people. lol

One thing I've realized over the years is that the people that truly LOVE you and understand you as a person, they are going to support you no matter what. The one's that don't OR the one's that let fear rule them probably won't. And I don't spend any energy on those people.

      Same thing here Rod,
My uncle who looked after my education was very furious when he heard of me resigning from bank job for IM. Its more than a year now but he is still not convinced that I am doing something productive.

I don't mean to sound sexist, but I think the "nesting" instinct that many women have (perhaps buried deep in their subconcious minds), will always be at odds with a husband's desire to be an entreprenuer. As someone has already mentioned here, some spouses prefer a small steady paycheck each week to the less uncertain riches from a successful online business (in spite of the fact that job security is a thing of the past). It's a psychological thing, I guess, and not something you'll ever be able to counter with reason.

        Dreams are for dreamers.

The proof in in the pudding.

If the money is there, it's an open and shut case that doesn't demand elaboration.

That's right Daniel, when the money is there it is pretty hard to knock the logic of what you are doing. It's before the dollars start coming in that you need the support and encouragement to keep at it.

My partner has very mixed feelings about my adventure, she wants to see me succeed of course but she is also very sceptical.

    Here is a little example...

I was recently told on WF to purchase an email opt in like Aweber, I can see the benefit in this but she has told me that I can't purchase Aweber until my site will cover the cost!

She does write my articles for me though

At most I get tolerance. At worst I get comments with a bit of a jab to them. I'm still working on the results that will make it clear that this IS a business and not just some hobby or selfish endeavor on my part.

Those of you who have a supportive spouse, tell them today how much you appreciate it!!! Maybe some of them with glazed eyes, will tune back in and brighten up when you shift to saying how wonderful they are, cause they are.
