The Power of Momentum

Do you think that one key moment can change your life?

One magic decision or key contact or lightning strike will make all the difference?

You're wrong.

One moment can't change anything. But a SERIES of moments can.

Let me explain... (I've got this point wrong a lot)

Who is more powerful? The guy who busts his ass in the gym, gives it his all, then stops doing it for a month?

Or the guy who runs every day a quarter mile and then walks home. (But he does it every day.) Who doesn't worry about doing it right, just gets out and does it. Then builds things up from there.

Think about it.

We all try so hard for that one knockout blow.

When the key is to out wait your opponent. To do the little things he won't because he's not willing to take the time or energy and is only looking for the quick solution.

Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. That's what the pros do.

Ever heard slow and steady wins the race?

I have a hard time myself trying to not be perfect. I want to get things right, you know?

When the key is just to do something positive, no matter how small, but do it CONSISTENTLY.

The only question I want to ask myself on any given day is "How can I do one positive thing for myself today? What's one step I can do?"

Like writing this post ;-)

Your direction changes when you start showing up every day for something, no matter how small. That's when your life REALLY changes. Not in the single moment, but in the consistency.

Thoughts?

Hmm actually one moment CAN change your life. If you get shot dead in the street well... that's pretty much it. Although, if you believe in reincarnation (which does exist) then I agree - that takes upon momentum, a catharsis of energy.

And I do agree with you... momentum is important. But there's more than just that.

    Dan,

Most of us have probably heard the speaker on stage or the author of a book that says...
"That's the moment that changed my life forever..."

Or something similar when explaining a "life changing moment." I would suspect that's the way it happens for some. But for most, I would say it's the persistent, consistent action that gets us to where we are all striving to be.

In other words, its a process. It doesn't just happen in one event.

I think it all grows from a starting point and evolves. And everyone's process is a little different and develops at different speeds.

First, there's the Desire to do something.
Then, a Decision is made to do it.
Finally, one must maintain Discipline to do that thing no matter what.

    A Process.

    Just my 2 cents!

Hmm. Sure I do think some moments that shape your life. For example, when my mom died of cancer, that was a pretty important moment :-(

I guess what I'm saying is: don't wait for the important moments. They will come on their own, if you keep moving and paying attention.

If you get scared of moving forward, like I do, just start small, and try to make it consistent. You'll be happy you're doing something, and I think the happy starts to carry you to bigger and better things.

Anyway, thanks for listening to my rant :-)

I agree 1000000000% and it has been a hard lesson that has taken me a long time to learn. We want, I think due to conditioning from TV shows in childhood, to find that one thing that we are automatically perfect at. We jump around looking for it. We start a million things but nothing gets DONE. Then we decide to just go for something but perfectionism causes procrastination and when it doesn't work right away we feel like we failed.

But you are right. Like Nike says, Just Do It. We just have to go for it every day. Every day take another step towards our goal. And that's another thing to remember- keep the same goal until it's accomplished! We can't walk in two different directions at once.

There's a lot of truth in this.

Many of the guys I met years ago just starting out with their
businesses ended up having substantial businesses today.

They all just took action day in day out, week in, week out and
over time all that work began to build up.

You do have to pay attention to what's bringing you results
and refine what you're doing so you can get the results you want.

But just continually taking action is probably the biggest key
    to success.

    Kindest regards,

    I totally agree

It is the consistent actions that you take that determine your future.

And I like your analogy. I work in a gym as a personal trainer and that is exactly what I tell people, it's about the consistent actions you take.

And if you think about the opposite, people don't get fat in one day, or in one lump sum gorging session. It is the consistent overeating that gets them fat.

Same with business - it is the consistent actions that you take that will determine where you will go.

And just like Andrew said you want to track those actions so you know if you are producing the results you want.

Find the actions that get you the results and do them consistently.

Small consistent actions will beat big erratic, inconsistent actions anyday of the week.

Definitely something interesting to think about. A single moment can change your life. A single decision can have a lasting impact.

Good post, Dan Maloney. This is something I think about a lot. It's really only when you keep doing the same things over and over again that you achieve results.

It's amazing when you see it in action. It's so fulfilling to see the results just grow and grow as you do it.
